Just out of curiosity, is this the sort of drum kit that is being suggested by some? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/yamaha-Rydeen-Drum-kit-excellent-condition-with-additional-Paiste-cymbal-/161770809126?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item25aa4aa726 I didn't know that you can buy acoustic drum kits of a known brand for £58. Not that I want to buy one, I'm just a nosey b'tard.
I read in another thread on here that someone had bought a 'Deko' instrument from Thomann (for those who don't know, these are instruments for display only as they are sold as unplayable) and was going to send it back...because it didn't play well enough for him. How can that be right?
Being able to return something bought at a distance within the cooling off period is a fundamental part of e-business law. The purpose of the law is to put someone who buys online in the same position as someone who buys in a shop. If someone bought a 'deko' instrument in person, then they could inspect it and decide whether or not they wanted to purchase it or not after an inspection. The law creates the same opportunity for goods bought at a distance, to inspect them before purchasing. A person buying from a shop can make their decision for whatever reason they want, e.g. they may decide that they don't like the way the pickups smell, or there may be a knot in the neck wood that looks like a reproductive organ or something. The law we have gives people buying online a similar flexibility for deciding not to buy goods - i.e. for any reason they damn please. The law is not just there for moral reasons, but also for practical reasons. If we didn't have the right to return items bought unseen, then online buying would become one big massive 'Market for Lemons'. Giving consumers the power to reject goods they don't want gives consumers confidence and keeps the market working. Furthermore, it has been said that part of the intention of the law was to do some equalising between online and bricks and mortar businesses. Consumer returns are part of the costs of doing business online. If those costs were reduced due to laxer rules, then online selling would have an even greater cost advantage over bricks and mortar shops. (Though note the previous comment about customer confidence.) Hence, I don't feel that there is anything immoral in any way in returning anything bought online for any reasons I choose to do so. (Note: I haven't actually returned something bought online yet, but I like having the option to and will advise others of their rights - even for dekos.)

I think the seller might actually be serious. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-guitar-body-unfinished-or-bass-guitar-chopping-board-/121721147631?hash=item1c572550ef

Denmark Street hype or tripe....
Annoying Twit replied to jonnythenotes's topic in General Discussion
I dropped into a number of shops today. Wunjos was clearly the best. The other shops had a small to medium bass selection. Wings had a wider range and some things I found interesting (e.g. Eastwood basses). One other shop had the biggest selection of Schecter basses that I've seen, and a selection of 8/9-ish string guitars. Another shop had a variety of Revelation basses, but mostly normal ones and no LP bass. All the shops had people working in them who were friendly and helpful. -
I saw a Relevation Bass VI today. I don't believe it is a 33" scale, that is probably a typo on their site. It looks small in real life, and I would guess the same size as the Fender Bass VI.

Rose Morris (the shop) has new Jazz basses for sale which are branded Rose Morris (about £170 quid) and Shaftesbury (about £350 quid). They are pretty much in the ballpark for modern Chinese made (I presume) Jazz basses. They play fine, IMHO, and are decent instruments for the money. Just mentioning them as we once in a while have a big thread about a new brand of bass that's great value for the money, such as Revelation. I'm just posting this as an example of how there are a LOT of those good value for the money brands, and the two Rose Morris own-brands are yet more examples. They told me that the Shaftesbury basses are imported as parts, and put together by their own tech. There was a quality control label on the bass, though in my own opinion the nut was cut high and there was a bit too much relief in the neck. It did seem to play quite well, and the neck had some interesting semi-flame grain on it. Is anyone still awake after all this writing about yet more cheap and mid-priced Jazz bass brands?

Rose Morris (the shop) has a Shaftesbury branded bass on display, not for sale. Apart from the next pickup being different (a lot can happen in three decades) it looks damn identical to my Cimar.
This set-up cannot entirely overcome limitations of pickup configuration/placement, and neither can your fingers or playing style. I first learned bass on a Precision. Very nice it was too, and it did nearly everything I wanted it to, but there was one sound that I could not get out of it - a certain fingerstyle sound that I heard lots of virtuoso/technical players doing. For a long time I thought it was my fault that I couldn't 'get' this sound - I did think it was all down to some kind of lack or limitation in my fingerstyle technique. And then one day I tried a Jazz bass for the first time, and soloed the bridge pickup, and BOOM! there was exactly 'that' sound. It wasn't anything to do with my fingers (or a compressor, or any other box of tricks) at all.
I agree that if you're after one particular sound, you may need the right bass to get it. But, I have a PJ bass. It's a cheapie so maybe the pickups are not the best. But, I don't think it's particularly more flexible than other basses I have, and IMHO a lot less flexible in sound than my Cimar bass which is a close copy of a well known American bass. That seems to do pretty much everything, with changes in playing style position pickup choice, pick, muting, outboard effects, etc. It just seems to sound good, no matter what I do with it. That makes me think that good pickups may trump a variety of pickups (such as the Spear Flextool) in some cases.

What is wrong with: Pretty much any bass --> decent compressor/limiter --> decent overdrive/distortion --> decent graphic EQ --> decent amp with suitable bypass switch usage?

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
T'was asleep. I've seen it now, and the white progressive is still there. The price at £40 seems a bit high for a deko, as it's only £104 for the normal one. Usually it's about 1/3 of the full price? Has the 5 string acoustic black fretted bass been mentioned in this thread?
Thanks to whoever bought the fretless acoustic 5. I had it in my shopping cart and was hovering.. hovering...hovering over the button to buy it. Thanks for saving me from myself.
Another one will be along soon. There have been quite a few acoustics recently. -

A pity that it's in poor condition. The wood looks very nice. -

I can't see your photos, presumably of the battery compartment. PM me an email address and I'll put them up for you when I'm back. -

http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_b_450_black_progressiv_deko.htm Dekos are going up and immediately down again all the time. I don't know what's going on. Here's a progressive bass 'on request'. -

The Jazz bass keeps on appearing on the list but then immediately disappearing again. -
Of course he did. It was the likes of him and Little Richard that influenced the Beatles before they apparently influenced the rest of the world. Re the case here that younger generations seem to confuse and even irritate some posters by "not getting" the Beatles. I've always liked the Beatles but it's not for us oldies to tell people what was, or was not good music, only what we liked and about the changes we saw at that time. I don't "get" Justin Beiber but obviously millions do. There's no law stating that they have to like the Beatles
I don't think that people are expecting young people to like The Beatles, it's more a matter of understanding why The Beatles were important. The two are very different things. Nobody can deny that The Beatles were hugely influential, and permanently changed the face of popular music. Also, as for the discussion as to how it's difficult to do something 'new' these days. That indicates that music has become a bit stagnant. And if music is stagnant, then that creates the conditions for a revolution. Preferably something that us old crusty people will not even recognise as music.
-
It's easy to miss what was really important about The Beatles, because nowdays we live in a post-Beatles era. By that I mean that other musicians have learned from The Beatles, and there is plenty of music that equals the quality and sophistication of what they did. The important thing is that The Beatles did it without a precedent to learn from. It's similar to how some artists can produce paintings in the style of the great masters. It doesn't make them more talented than the great masters, as the technique may be there. What's missing is the innovation. Everyone seems to get that for art and science. For some reason people forget that for music, and wonder what all the fuss was about.

I just got back from swimming right now. The 5 string acoustic fretless is still up. I've got the 4 string fretless and like it a great deal. -
They criticise Nash for not giving The Hollies the respect that they deserve. Given their cheekiness concerning bass, I feel they don't have a leg to stand on.
-
There's one level 'below' bass guitar (according to that forum) - Banjo! Cheekiness upon cheekiness.

Some forums give people different textual ratings depending on how many posts they have made. On The Hollies forum, the ratings from the largest number of postings to the least are: Lead Guitar Rhythm Guitar Acoustic Guitar Bass Guitar The cheeky b'stards!

I've always wanted to go here: https://www.thedeep.co.uk Returning to the topic, I've seen those Westfield Warwick copies on eBay quite a bit, but don't remember seeing an in-depth review. On the other hand, it's possible to buy Rockbasses for not much more money.

Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
I must get around to rewriting my program. I'm sure I'm missing loads of stuff that is coming and going before it gets up on the main decorative guitars and basses page. BTW: The 12 string that I got with my recent batch has reached it's final destination, my friend's father, and he loves it. I wonder if one of these will ever turn up as a deko. http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hb_custom_line_cld_10sce_12bks.htm -
Do you and your partner have similar musical tastes?

Draw a Venn diagramme. The overlap region will probably be about the same size as each of the the non-overlapping regions.
