Hello any Oxfordites. My Duo / occasional trio, The New Moon, are on early doors 8.30? along with Redox and the Pete Fryer Band. We play acoustic, sometimes psychadelic songs, on acoustic guitar and fretless bass, helped out by a bit of flute and djembe here and there. Come and say hello! It's good to see the Jack Bass love going on here! I've got a Jack custom in natural I wouldn't mind selling as I haven't played it since I got it (playing fretless, well, a defretted jack, mostly now and play the blue fretted in my avatar) It's in good condition but the truss rod will only adjust the neck so far, and won't take all the relief out with std gauge strings. These things don't go out of tune! PM me if you're interested, it won't be expensive..... Cheers Jules

His has gold hardware and an unfashionably brown figured finish. I thought the p/us were DiMarzio, but were rather microphonic. Jules

^^ that was nice playing. He's a new name to me, and it seemed to make sense of having those "extra" strings for once!!!

I imagine a headphone output would be useful on a travel bass, saves carting an amp about for quiet practice. Fails the "passive" criterion though, unless you incorporate a stethoscope style earphone.

I like some of the old players who, I think, moved things along in their own way, so I would have to agree with: Colin Hodgekinson (Back Door) Percy Jones And add: Leigh Gorman Whoever called Ed Poole - nice one! I used to know him a bit. Good player and a nice guy.

Do you use headphones for monitoring the mixdown?

My Gibson SG special '74 was in its case and fell from waist height to the floor. I didn't think to much to it (well, it WAS in the case after all) but the next time i opened it up.... Headstock crack I VERY nearly cried!! The good news is it wasn't too severe and repaired ok. I must have the world record for ruining a bass though. 10 minutes after getting it home (local ebay sale) I had broken the truss rod, just giving the neck that "final tweak" to get the bow out... After years of headless bass playing, I managed to knock my newly acquired U.S. Masters off its strap walking through a doorway and catching the headstock. It landed front down onto bare concrete. Good job it was oiled finish, the scuffs hardly show on the body. Could have been SO much worse!! Funny, I never considered myself clumsy, but might have to modify my opinion after writing this! What's with the extra holes in the neck? Did they add more screws to stabilize the neck in that "wizards sleeve" neck pocket?

Are there many active/passive basses on the market? [/quote] Hohner Jack Bass, and their Steinberger-a-likes have a switch between active/passive with an LED on for Active... Good value basses, the Jack, and a nicer shape than a Status. **covers head and runs for cover!!**

That's so nice. I've never seen that shape in a bass before, like a Les Paul Junior or LP Special. MMMMmmmm!

I Can't believe there's only been one call out for Kim Clarke of Defunkt so far! She plays really interesting funk grooves, and is about the only one in the band that really nails their jazz numbers when the rest of the band frankly sounds like they're struggling. I can't remember hearing any other girl bassists playing slap in '81 either. Also, I nominate Bilbo as the best carrot-holding bass player out there. Bar none.

You can tell it is a B302 - 2v 2T controls. I had a B301F (fretless) in mahogany and it was the worst fretless I've ever played. Most of the neck was a dead spot! That might explain the recurrence of one in a shop...

A bit of foam tucked under the strings right at the bridge has the desired effect, worked a treat on my Marathon 6 string fretless. I also used an Alesis Microverb on the smallest room size reverb at about 50% mix which gives some of the resonance characteristic of a DB. These things worked for me, but I imagine nylon wound strings and also a piezo bridge would get you some of the way there too. Cheers Jules

I've defretted a Hohner Jack Custom and it works really well. The sound lovely and woody. This could be a real bargain for someone prepared to spend a bit of time.

Sounds more like a wiring fault than the pickup itself.
