I think if we knew how much we didn't know about this sort of thing we would be overwhelmed, and end up not starting at all!

Pleased to see this. I nearly bought one off fleabay till I noticed the positioning of the top strap button. Can't do with neck dive.
Glad to have helped. They may not all be the same, but my Mustang PJ had it too, just about mitigated by the lightweight Gotoh tuners I swapped in.

I borrowed one for a bit, sounded good but had THE worst neck dive.

Spent some time working out how to secure the pickups and achieve decent height adjustment. I'm direct fixing them to the pocket bases with firm sponge underneath - a bit like bass guitar pickups tend to be done.
For the positioning of the bridge, I have strung it up with a 'proper' set of electric strings and packed up the top of the roller bridge to get it to the correct action height. That way, I am able to position the optimum position and angle of the bridge, given the adjustment range of the saddles, giving plenty of further intonation adjustment for alternative string gauges or tunings.
With a 6mm bradpoint through the two bridge adjuster holes, I have then marked the centre point for the bushes drill holes (11mm...that's meant a 24hr hour Amazon jobee for an 11mm bradpoint which should arrive later today)
And while I'm waiting for the bradpoint for the bridge bushes, on to one of the other last scary bits - drilling holes in the top for the controls!
It will be fiddly enough as it is...but thank goodness for that hatch at the back!
You've got a poop hatch!

Our cover (Charms Against the Evil Eye) of the Jazz Butcher song Southern Mark Smith, recorded live with acoustic guitar overdubs only, 2nd take.
Leader Pat Fish was a good friend and mentor to our singer. He sadly passed in November this year (2021) and will be greatly missed by many.- 3

I've got one about ready.
It's going to be Southern Mark Smith by the Jazz Butcher, whose main man Pat Fish passed earlier this year. He was a good friend and mentor to our singer.
We'll be doing it tonight at our first gig in nearly 2 years at Oxford Bullingdon tonight. Watch this space .

Now that you mention it, it would really look good on a black bass
Yes please! Especially as we play slightly psychedelic pop 😀

Love the psychedelic scratch plate, where did you get it?
I have an identical bass and it now needs one too
Me too! Would brighten up my 'none more black' version no end!
If your buyer doesn't want it, I'll form an orderly queue behind @Osiris for it!

Probably my least favourite ACG body shape, but it does look beautifully made and I love the woods! Interesting pickup placement too, very widely spaced with a big humbucker close to the neck.
Haha! I was just about to post that it's my favourite ACG shape!
Different strokes etc. 😀

I’ve had exactly the same thoughts with short scale basses in order to have a greater string choice!!
I was thinking of this with the very short scale basses I’ve made (27”) in order to use standard short scale strings. I didn’t find an off the shelf bridge that suited what I wanted so the idea went on hold as I don’t have time to make a custom bridge at present.Be interested to see where this goes!
Cheers!
I was thinking something like the Warwick bridge, maybe set into body, would work. I think it would need to be set low so nice smooth curve would be maintained. Fortunately, I like rounded basses, and these things may inform the design. I also love Jabba bass designs, so feel free to incorporate in the near future 😀 😃

Nice woodwork BTW. I like it, though it looks like it must weigh a lot. Just taming the bottom horn a bit might look OK, but the control cavity would then need attention. You could bring it to the body edge like Crimson guitars do.

I'd like to rinse some ideas through the hive washing machine that is the build diary massive (err, I think I mean you regulars)
I'm a small fellow and my concept is a small bodied short scale 24 fret bass with good upper fret access.
My main novel (?) concept is to have the bridge as near the body edge as possible, anchoring the strings on the underside and gently curving round the body (possibly in shallow grooves?)
The 2 benefits, as I see them are getting the bridge piece as far South as possible and if the geometry is correct, being able to use the far greater choice of long-scale strings.
I welcome your thoughts, and hope I've got the idea across 😀

Except with a wider nut width and 2 frets less.
My Mustang only has 19 frets anyhow 😒

I've got the black bridge off my Mustang bass if you're interested, if you aren't already sorted. It's just the standard bbot Fender fare, or are you going for something nicer. Almost unused.

I was wondering why "sonic" blue? I can't think what the origin might be, but I'm sure someone on here knows 😉

Thanks for the input folks. I got to play his bass yesterday and was blown away how well it played with no setup. I would have further fettled it to my taste, but he has a lot heavier touch than me. It was a flying visit, so I didn't get the chance to remove the scratchplate though 😞

I have one of these on the way from Tides guitars (TTTides officially), but it'll take a year to be finished. It's going to be 30" scale, pickups will be single coil in thunderbird housing and moved closer to the neck, with a series/parallel switch, and will either be a wood body or composite wood. It will be neck through. Can't wait!
This is what the pickup positioning should look like.
Tasty, I've always loved the design of the Travis Beans

They're available again, I ordered the flats and half rounds this time last year. I put the half rounds on first and haven't even tried the flats yet! The half rounds are interesting, like flats with a little more bite, but the feel is almost indistinguishable from flats. I might try them on fretless, I think they would be great.
