Mine was in a band called 25 Views of Worthing. He played the bass.

@BreadBincan't remember if I  posted this elsewhere,  but  25 Views of Worthing finally released their "lost" album. I knew Roger Hillier back in Watford. Sadly,  Mark Sugden, their drummer, died a couple of years ago.

If you go onto Axesrus (whether or not you want to buy from them) for, say, the CTS pots, they have a tab marked 'Technical Specs' with a photo of the pots with the essential measurements.  You need enough chamber depth (and remember the cover) for the bottom of the thread  to the bottom of the pot to fit and enough thread depth (CTS do 3 different lengths) to allow a spring washer, plain washer and nut.  If the thread is going to protrude around 3mm from the top, that should be enough for the plain washer and nut.  Much less and you may have difficulty getting the nut on, much more and your knobs will sit slightly high (depending on the knobs).

If you are planning any push/pull pots, and/or blend pots then these are much deeper - again, the Axesrus site has dimensions.

I'm sure someone will come in on this.  Just a point, though: the blue one has not had any black put on to exaggerate the quilt - it's just application of the blue stain, sand, reapply stain, etc - the stain absorbs progressively more into the end grain part of the figuring and so darkens.  The red example has probably had black applied (same general process but the initial stain/sand uses black stain and then the final coats are the coloured stain) as you suggest.  Depends what look you are after.

I've not done any finishing,  but there's loads of videos on Crimson Guitars channel, and they sell some lovely coloured stains too... I watch the videos for relaxation

    Not likely! Lol.

I can't tell if you're more worried that I'll manage to get it more in the Wal sonic region, or worried that I won't be happy. 😄

I've learned a lot so far. More learnings will come. I haven't seen anyone else devote effort publicly to trying to work out a Wal, and I may as well share what I do learn. Even if it is that what we might need is a preamp that no-one else apart from Wal has yet built, or what have you.

I'd love for someone to be able to run a model of the preamp through LT Spice or similar, maybe if we can get a schematic going....hopefully @MoonBassAlphaor my friend who is looking at the preamp photos can yet help. Wait and see.

Apologies for lack of recordings this week; I had promised it but family life has gotten in the way. Soon I hope. The Lusithand preamp is excellent.

Sorry,  I  haven't managed to find the photos yet, may only have been on an old phone 😞

Playing around with the laser yesterday… 1 pass gives you about .5mm dept. Also (because I could) tried cutting out an inlay in maple ….this was just for fun. I will either leave au naturel OR fill with epoxy/ebony dust. Also did a little print on back of neck.

    Fantastic @Andyjr1515!

I’ve got this week off and will be doing some recordings with the Lusithand preamp.

I also managed to get some photos of the Wal circuit boards, before I had to give the bass back to its rightful owner. It looks like (according to a friend who knows about these things) that it’s a state variable filter design. I would not be the best person to ask, but there you go. He’s going to have a shot at working out a circuit diagram, we’ll see if it’s possible.

Oh, and it looks like the potentiometers are made custom by a company called Radiohm. Here’s an old ‘for sale’ thread with what they look like - https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/343198-sold-wal-mk1-and-later-control-pot-set/

I did have the  circuit diagram,  sketched out by a local luthier. I'll try to find it later

Quickly and quickly... if the 3-pos. switch is in between the pickups, the change can be done while switching the right hand position from frets to fretless and vice versa.

While I mentioned the left and right hand necks (and @PaulThePlugused the right word, "reverse"). check this Jonas Hellborg's Wal:

    http://walbasshistory.blogspot.com/2014/07/wal-double-neck-basses.html

I wish you will share the pics, when your monster is ready.

A double neck Wal would save you a fortune in gym membership!

  7. I don't know if it is just mine,  but I  find the sound very aggressive and bright for a shortie,  even with half rounds on I usually have the tone down to about 3/10.

The reason I  thought it could be just mine is that  it's an fsr with ebony fingerboard, and I have a guitar with ebony board and that's also very bright sounding...

  8. @laurence birdhi there,  I've only just seen this thread (tip, use @xxxxx next time!), but to answer,  yes, the Truvox did work, with all the caveats outlined above. Acoustic instruments sound really nice,  and the reverb is lush. As long as your expectations are realistic for bass use ( pretty quiet) and seal the box properly,  you're good. I played around with  customised settings on a tc spectracomp to help keep the cone under control which also helps get a bit more out of it too. Hope this helps!

That is an idea that I have been toying with but not on this build. I have tried a couple of samples of lighting both clear and frosted type plastics.

Luminlay do sheets of luminous plastic sheet so I was thinking at one point of using this for fretlines....

    Luminous sheet

Looking on their website,  they have ready made fretless line markers too. Pretty dear,  as they say the manufacturing yield is low.
