Not sure I'm seeing much of a resurgence of Steiny-style minimalist basses, but there's definitely a bit of a resurgence of headless basses going on - the new Carvin/Kiesel Vader basses are getting rave reviews, i'm seeing more Status headlesses than at any time since the 80s, and Ned Steinberger's own Radius basses seem to be doing really well.

My RM-800 just happily survived a UK tour, being used twice each night by myself and the headlining band, so I think we can say that it's proven itself in the reliability stakes. The only criticisms I can level at it are that it could do with a little more power - 1000W would be nice. Although, to be fair, I am using it to drive a Barefaced Big Twin II which can absorb a ridiculous amount of power. And I'll second the non-switchable subharmonics criticism - it accidentally got turned up a couple of times on tour leading to a less-than-desirable tone.

Did anyone see that Sadowsky have now joined the singlecut club? I like it. http://sadowsky.com/single-cut/

Unsurprising. Ashdown is basically run by most of the same people who ran TE back before the Kaman buyout so he's probably well acquainted with them. I guess this means Peavey are going to wind up TE once and for all then. That'd be a real shame - another huge name to add to the bass amp graveyard, along with SWR, Genz-Benz and Marshall.

David King used to offer custom basses with built-in tuners. No idea if he's still building basses (his website is still up, but is ancient), but here's the page with the deets: http://www.kingbass.com/features.html

Seriously, if he had Paypal or credit card payment options on his website, I'd have at least two of these by now. Spectacularly good basses for the money.

Fantastic basses. Tried one out a few weeks back at The Gallery and it was more than a match for any of the other high-end Jazzes they had there in terms of tone and feel. Having that parametric midrange control makes a world of difference. I just wish they'd do something about the weird control layout and that fugly headstock! Still, quite tempted by the CAR ones - fretted and fretless 5-strings, please.

For new instruments, got to second the Revelation recommendation. I've got a Revelation 5-string Jazz-type bass, and it's somehow ended up being my #2 bass after my Sei (this is up against a Spector and several high-end Ibanezes). Fantastic instrument.

Just bought a Boss GT-6B effects unit from Pete. Top bloke, no issues, arrived when promised.
But they haven't... they have Eden and thats where they are focusing their R&D.
True, although there are no longer any Marshall-branded bass amps being made. Eden amps are great, but they don't really carry Marshall's rock'n'roll legacy with them...

Good call on the Peaveys - you might be able to find a Cirrus BXP for £300-ish, although keep an eye out for a G-Bass - they're US-made, with a Modulus graphite neck and Peavey's beefy VFL pickups. Spectacularly good bass, and, when they do show up, cheap as (moderately expensive) chips.

A few good candidates would be a Spector Legend. Ibanez BTB, ESP LTD F-series, Warwick Rockbass (pick a body style) or possibly, if you want to consider used instruments, a Stingray or German Warwick (the Corvette $$ or Standards spring to mind) sometimes show up for the sort of money you are looking to spend. You can't really go wrong with any of these.

The first bass I ever played, 24 years ago, was an ESP Jazz. I love the new Bunny Brunel bass - it's way better than the Carvins he used to play. Quite tempted to get a fretted and fretless pair. And my metal side is quite fond of the F-series basses. They do make some brilliant stuff, but very little of it makes it over here. The Japan-only Edwards basses are fantastic, and I love the woods on the Stream series - take a look: Some of the Japanese basses have rather amusing names though, the Halibut and the Bottom Bump, for starters...

Just got hold of a Rootmaster 800 - great little head. I was upgrading from an Ampeg SVT-7 after its notorious reliability issues reared their ugly heads and it died on me mid-gig. I got the Ampeg fixed, but the RM-800 just sounds better to my ears. The EQ voicing is just a little more musical, somehow, plus having the built-in compression, fuzz and octaver is handy (especially the compressor). No issues with it as of yet, although it's only got a few gigs under its belt so far and, unlike the Ampeg, I haven't heard any scare stories. Definitely worth giving one a try.

Having a bit of a clear-out this month, so up for sale we have my very nice Ibanez SR1206 from Ibanez's Premium range. The specs are: mahogany body with ovangkol top, bubinga/wenge neck, monorail bridge, Nordstrand Big Single pickups, 3-band active EQ with mid frequency switch. Nice and light too (a little over 7lbs), with a lovely skinny neck that, in the words of our TalkBass brethren, "plays like buttah" with great, even tone all over. It's never been gigged and has hardly left the house, so it's in pretty much perfect condition. It'll come with one of the nice Ibanez hard-ish cases, tools, etc. GAK are currently selling these new for £949, so why not pick this one up for a bargain £650? Would prefer that the buyer collects or arranges to meet in the Central/South London area, or I can meet you more or less anywhere within the southern side of the M25. If all else fails, I can ship at the buyer's expense.

The Soap Girls played a gig with us this past weekend at T.Chances in Tottenham. To be honest, when I saw them there, I thought they were a hen party who'd got lost. The bass player (who was rocking a nice Warwick Vampyre) wasn't actually wearing a top - just body paint! The guitarist had some very nice gear, including a mirror-finish Ibanez Jem77 and some expensive pedals. And, lo and behold, they could actually play. They weren't very good, but they could play. What happened to them in Hastings was sh!tty and the guy was obviously a prize dick.

Up for sale is my Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass in lovely shiny Candy Apple Red. I've owned it for a little over 18 months, and it's never been outside my house, so it's still in immaculate condition. It's even still got the plastic on the pickups and scratchplate! Typical Squier VM accoutrements, nice sound, not too heavy, and did I mention shiny? No case or gig bag, alas, so I'd rather not post or ship it. I'm based in Croydon, and can travel to central London or within the southern half of the M25 to meet you to do the deal. £175 and it's yours.

Up for sale is my Ampeg SVT-7. Classic Ampeg tone with valve preamp, pumping out 1000W of class D power. This one has recently been upgraded by Polar Audio to the latest revision motherboard and power amp (the newest ones have no known reliability issues, unlike the early ones). Cosmetically in almost perfect condition, hardly gigged, and a bargain at £400. Collection from Croydon preferred, but could arrange to meet or post if required. Cheers.
