1.
I’m making 2 at the mo a precision that I’m modifying in to a ‘51 telecaster bass style but with split p bass pickups (so really it’s more like a Mike Dirnt Precision) so I’m filling the original routed holes to re rout them neater as the pickguard now won’t cover but I can’t decide whether to do a shorter pickguard with metal control plate or to make a ‘72 style longer pickguard? And a P/J style Jazz bass I’m just enjoying making them exactly how I want them to look I don’t know if anyone will be interested but I’ll post some pics when I’ve finished them to get peoples opinions
I am sure there will be interest. If you start a topic about your project in the Build Diary sub-forum especially.
 2.
I fail to understand why anyone would want to build a bass from a kit. The price of the kit is so low that the components must be the poorest quality available and you won't know whether you like either the feel or the sound of it until you invested the time and effort in building it..
Until you try one, yes.
 3.
I don't know if I'm gonna get crucified for admitting I use "Rocksmith" to learn but it is good in the aspect I can slow the track down and reduce the number of notes then slowly add more notes and up the speed only problem is that it measures the amount of correct notes you play so trying to use short cuts and developing my own style isn't possible but I spose once I've learnt it I can start adding my own style in
How about doing versions like I Shot the Sheriff by both Bob Marley & The Wailers and Eric Clapton or I Fought the Law by both The Bobby Fuller Four and The Clash? I just noticed how both of those involve conflict with the authorities so kids... don't try this at home.
 4.
I notice nobody seems to have done a blind test, ie someone else plays the same riff with different cables or the tester has the cables changed and plays without seeing what cable is being used, surely this would take away any preconceptions and give a proper balanced opinion. A bit like a blindfold food test! I wonder if people are expecting a certain change in tone etc that's what they perceive to get rather than there actually being a change.
You could have some fun doing that at a Bass Bash.
 5. I am another fan of cloth bound cable. It's got nothing to do with the sound though. I got some with my Sony headphones. The fabric seems to stiffen the cable against torsional loads and prevents kinking and small loops while allowing it to bend freely in larger radii. As it is a long cable this is useful. I imagine it would help with instrument cable but I haven't bought any for that purpose. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-MDR-CD2000-Headphones-metallic/dp/B000051SDL
 6.
I have a semi complete Pitbull Rick bass, it just requires wiring and painting now but the standard neck joint was a complete joke and would not have lasted five minutes, I had to do some serious carpentry work on it to make it useable, the bridge was wrong (again the right bridge needed more carpentry work) the pickups were wrong, again more woodwork...I now have a playable bass with a decent action that looks about right....would I recommend the kit....not a chance!
I'm still finessing my Pitbull Ibanezish bass. Not as bad as yours sounds but I need to shim the neck to allow a better range of adjustment at the bridge. The output jack socket and a few screws were replaced with better components. I felt I got decent value for money. I would not expect any kit to go smoothly without some fitting work to bring it all together. The word fitting in this instance implies minor woodwork and metalwork. After I had bought mine I discovered that there also is a UK supplier with what looks like a similar Ibby look-alike. I'd try that one next and save on the £60 odd import duty.
 7.
Any one done one? Fairly obvious that they need better components and a full fret dress etc etc But on YouTube some have done lovely builds
I've built my own bass from a kit; http://basschat.co.uk/topic/308684-ibanez-tribute-kit/ I enjoyed the whole experience and I love the way it sounds. Bonus.
 8.
The nitro I use is sourced from someone who I know uses formulas that do crack and check - so it's not a "modern" formula as such. Not tried multiple temp shocks tho. That'll be next on the list
Repeated cycles are the way to go. I wouldn't say you need to be extreme with it at the hot end of the cycle as the freezer gives you good temperature differential without risk of heat damage. The hair drier is perhaps not the best tool especially as it is makes a hot spot where it strikes. What may help is if you make a warm box to contain the body with insulation and an incandescent light bulb in it for the heat source. Give it lots of time, say 24 hours at each exposure to ensure full expansion of the body and the coating. Take sensible precautions as there will be a fire risk if you get it wrong. Similarly, make sure that the core of the body gets chilled fully when you freeze it. Avoid sudden transference from one extreme to the other else you will risk splitting the wood. Looking forward to the photos somewhere down the line.
 9.
I know Merv would have been tickled at the thought of being posthumously awarded a double-barrelled name! Here he is in 2004 shortly before he hung his axe up and in 1948 when he started off as an axe-man with Arthur Green's of Silsden:
It is important to remember the characters that stand out in life. We will never see their like again. Good on you!
 10. I'm still laughing inwardly at the comment by Rich saying Pino's fingers put him in mind of the facehugger from Ridley Scott's Alien.
 11.
Just picked up some. I hear a difference. Better tone across the spectrum. In my mind worth the ducats. What say you?
We have a member here who does premium cable to order - OBBM. If you have decent cable you have peace of mind. If you can hear the difference you were not buying good cable before. Beware of cables that are well lubricated with snake oil, if you get my drift. 'Nuff said.
 12.
...my main reason for posting it was to share the YouTube clip showing John's clear cut blatant response regarding the disk jockey that had stopped playing The Beatles records...
Nutters of that calibre are not news to us Brits Blue. Glad you put the link up. I have the four segments saved for my grandkids.
 13.
And here it is with its first coat of varnish:
Be honest now... was it fully dry when you took that piccy? That wet look is making me amorous.
 14.
We may have a name for the bass, then...
Rascal Mervyn Lyte Not a bad-un either. It'll get called The Rascal for short and Mike can put a personal tribute to his late friend out there in a subtle form. May I suggest you hyphenate the full name thus: Rascal Mervyn-Lyte?
 15.
A micro fibre cloth is good at removing dust. My local supermarket sells packs of about 5 in different colours for a couple of quid
Have you tried a tack cloth? You can buy multi-packs of them for under a tenner. Less sticky than a Post-it[sup](TM)[/sup] yet sticky 'nuff for dust. Paint sprayers use them. Maybe Post-its would work too?
 16. Harharharhar. I walked right into that one.
 17. By the way. I am also a radiogram hacker. I hated changing records on it because of the low cabinet and hinged door. I removed the turntable and made a plinth for it to sit on top of the unit. It was a simple thing to extend the wiring from the turntable and send it back into the cabinet through the grill at the back. I also made up external speaker cabinets for it and filled them with discarded 10 inch drivers from my aunt and uncle's scrap heap. I was 14 when I did that. I got my first half-decent turntable, a Pioneer PL12D, in my early twenties. That Alba radiogram smelt wonderful when it warmed up. That and the valve glow through the grill with the lights out are the only things I miss about it.
 18.
...And unless you were doing hiphop/electro no-one used the cowbell!...
Ah... that dreaded dink sound. Also favoured by Whitney Houston on I Wanna Dance With Somebody. It was in the charts for a long time and I grew to hate that sound with passion. The dink was a bit annoying as well. Happy days...
 19. Come on you lot. Andy's in 'nuff trouble at home because of all the swift droppings that Mrs AJR has to wipe up. Don't encourage him.
 20.
Nah, you're thinking of a drummer. You heard about the drummer who was suicidal about his bad timing ? Threw himself behind a train. Baddum tish !
I'd have really gone for a punch-line of Squish baddum! You can't have everything in this world. But seriously, I love drummers, I just couldn't eat a whole one.
 21.
Mr Edwards in his full, Bass glory (I nearly forgot about this gem).
Someone explain what a "virus mix" is please? I am not a great fan of re-releases with new, up-to-the-minute, beats grafted on if that's what it is. For the moment I am playing the tune back in my head as remembered.
 22.
That gave me some LOLs, ROFLs, and LMAOs
My laughter, on the other hand, is not abbreviated. It is full-on with some of Dave's delivery.
 23.
I give myself kudos and credibility for all sorts of stuff all the time. I think I was 9 or 10 years old. I had their records and knew I wanted in on all if it. the beat, girls, the fashion, the attention, I wanted to be cool. They opened the door to all that for me. And if history serves right I wasn't alone. Blue
I credit you for embedding yourself in the colours of the US flag on your avatar. Subtle yet patriotic. Good one!
 24.
...traditional irish folk music...
Excellent point! People focus on the fabs being from Liverpool while forgetting that Liverpool is strongly influenced by Irish culture.
 25.
I would have to say I am more a huge fan of The Beatles but not necessarily their music. I can't think of four names that naturally roll off the tongue more than; John, Paul, George & Ringo. Blue
Careful now. That's close to admitting to being a groupie! Heeheehee
