1.
For smaller gigs: A pair of RCF Art 745s on top. A pair of RCF 905s usually stacked in the corner of the room. Behringer X-air XR 18 mixer. In ears all round. For medium gigs: A pair of RCF Art 745s on top. Four RCF 905s either one pair either side of the stage under the tops if we can get them over 60ft apart otherwise in a single big stack somewhere. Behringer x-air XR 18 mixer. In ears all round. Large gigs: Hired rig with engineer. Bass gets pa support at all as I di mainly. Only get to use my nice rig when depping these days.
Oh yes very nice. Those 745s on their own would kill most bass rigs but people are obsessed with having their own big rig to stand next to!
2. I think the downsides of using your backline as FOH far out weighs having a thin sound on stage but with a monster PA giving a nice even full yet articulated sound to the audience. A pair of RCF 745As will cost two grand and will make most pub bands sound amazing compared to trying to batter the room down from the rear corner of the room with an 8x10 and Ampeg head whilst the guitarist deafens everyone with a Marshall stack as the inaudible singer struggles with an ancient pa system but hey as long as the bass has heft what else matters. Yeah yeah you will all say that's not our band but there is one in every town every week so someone must be playing bass in them!
3. Trying to get the balance right is the hard bit for me, I only practice if I've got gigs coming up but at the same time I'd hate a four hour bar gig every night!
4. I've seen some bands with bags of heft where the bassist was using in ears and a DI box, lighter than class D and loads of heft!
5.
Those Realistic watts are so much more powerful than those standard watts. Man, I bet playin with those D and B monitors is an absolute dream. Drum and Bass you say? There's this great pub I reckon you should play at.
Sounds fishy to me.
6. We use a Realistic 125 watt PA, we are a drum and bass band and get lots of positive comments on our sound, that said we hire in six D and B monitors for most gigs.
7. Maybe all new basses should be sent to you Alex to have the pickup height set up? These people who have been playing for years with some of the best kit out there probably don't know what they have been missing! Lol.
8. If a player has a specific tone they want then that's great, that's why Alex requires all your info up front but for me I'd rather have a cab that does lots of things fairly well than one designed and supplied for a specific setup. I don't know If I'll be rocking out with a pick or playing some blues finger style from one gig to the next, I use a variety of heads too, I haven't got time to adjust my pickup height between songs to suit the cab!
9. There are some very light rays out there ime.
10. Di box and a quality pa system is the future, you've got to have a pa so that's where to invest your money surely?
11.
Have you got any data on the response curves or tuning?
What's that got to do with anything?
12.
Aww I love a bit of fishing. 3 bites in one go. :-p
"We're gonna need a bigger boat!"
13. I only know two names on the magazine cover and one is Jools.
14. Isn't a member here matey with him?
15.
That's a bass set-up issue - the pickups need balancing. I might have put this in one of our older manuals but I see it isn't in the current one. If you're having that problem through the cab you'll have the same problem when DI'd through the FOH or when recording. A lot of bassists will adjust their pickup balance through a little practice amp or at home practice volume. If you do that you're likely to end up with the low strings too loud and the high strings too quiet once you're at gig loudness - I do the main adjustment at home and then take a screwdriver to rehearsal/gig for fine tuning. You may need to do this whenever you change the brand/type/gauge of your strings and you'll always need to do this with a new bass or if you've adjusted your action or set-up significantly.
So we need different basses for different cabs now, no wonder people say going light weight is expensive!
16. Sorry I can't do a link (anyone techy please help!) Beyonce new album track 11 "All night" sounds to me like flea sat the session in 1993, I presume this is LT on her Ray 5? If a Ray is a one trick pony then jeez its some trick!
17. I don't have a problem with an Encore that someone has stuck one on but there was a company making replicas as close as possible to a real one including the decal running it as a business, that's just a plain copyright breach surely?
18. These new fangled bins aint for me, I prefer to use good old fashioned bags of heft.
19.
Is that dB or d&b ..?
Boom!
20. I've bust a wrist before and they waited a few months for me so I can't say much. Depends on how many other gigs you have lined up too?
