1. Has anyone here got or used one..?? [Avalon] I am thinking of getting one for recording purposes and Thomman seem to be the cheapest by a mile. Read plenty of reviews , which all great... but a bit of hands on experiance in use would be good. Garry
 2.
The early SR5s had alnico pickups. They switched to the ceramic magnets with the phantom coil in around 1993 IIRC.
That proberly explains the tonal difference.... My mate has a 1997 , and we did a A/B... I know strings come into play etc... But neverless..it has the old Ray sound/vibe.... So one happy geezer here...!! Garry
 3. This Arrived yesterday... From the evilbay... 1987...i think this is the first year of the 5 strings. The back of the neck is not oiled like the newer ones. To my ears the sound is more like the old Rays... Have they changed the pre's on the newer ones...??? Anyway play's like a dream.. Paid £820.00...proberly a bit over the top for a secondhand Musicman. But it plays and sounds superb......

http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintagebass.html
I picked one of these up for about £100.00 s/h... Great value.... Stuck a Badass on it..and it sings great... Garry

 6.
I've backed Bob Monkhouse on three occasions - Very funny man, he was!
Did a tour show with him...and he was a very clever comic.... In fact to clever...half the time the audiance did not know what he was going on about...i thought he was great... Hey 'out toplayjazz'....do you know a drummer from your area called 'Bill Hayton'....?? Garry
 7.
Check out the first album man, simply titled The Yellowjackets, every song is pure cheesey American Chat show music but it's so good you can't help but smile, and Jimmy Haslip is by far one of the most underrated bassists out there!
A great album...thumbs up for that one... I got to see Jimmy Haslip in Berlin a couple of months back... and he was awsome.. Then got to chat with him for about 1/2 hour after the gig... Top Geezer Garry
 8. I played Bass for Boney M on a tour in 1989... Does that count....??? I HOPE NOT...!!! Garry
 9.
I thought it was something to do with having a better balance when sat down? dont ask me where i heard that, grapevine methinks.
Mine has great Balance when sitting down... and plenty of sustain - but that could be a combination of neck thru and the woods.. Plus i have a really tight 'B' string..which is unusual for a 34 " scale.. Then again , it might all be a load of B.......s...!! And its Just in your fingers.... Dont ask me where i heard that.......... Garry

 17.
I always preferred playing that particular 'bass break' fingerstyle, always cut through nicer through a PA. Si
Interesting you should say that... I watched Rose Royce in the Early 80's in a Cabaret club i was working in watford. And the Bass Player [original] did not slap the break with his thumb..... He patted it with his fingers...hard on the dusty end of the neck... There you go...that should start a riot..!! Garry
 18.
I dunno... I've got through my whole bass-playing life without knowing how (or wanting) to slap. It depends on where you want to take it, I suppose. I *do* know that the day I find myself slappin' out Car Wash will be the day before I sell all my gear and take up the trumpet.
Funny you should say that.....[Trumpet] I started on Trumpet..playing in Glenn Miller Bands... Then when i was given the chance to play Bass in a band doing'Car wash' I was there...even though i kept arsing up the 'Slap break'... 30 years on and i still arse it up..... Garry
 19.
Yes - why slap a precision. If you want to slap - get a slappers bass. Personally I think slap is a busted flush and only of use in an 80's tribute band but if you have to do it - thats what Jazz basses are for (or Alembic, GB, Status, Musicman and anyone I've left out that might be offended).
Plenty of Guys Slap on a Precision..... Nice new strings...sounds great , and punchy... Check out Freddie Washington... a master at slapping on a Presicion...! As for just in 80'S bands....uumm Most guy's here will tell you..todays working Bassist needs to have all the styles up there sleeves.. You never know whats thrown at you when you turn up at a gig/show/session/dep whatever. Ok if you just do one style..and that's what you wanna do..or if thats what you known for... but that limits your options for work. Every function band in the world seems to do 'Car Wash' ..in just about every key but the original...!! Oh well Mr Miller and Co might as well hang up there boots then.... Garry
 20. Every month Computor music gives away a free Daw,plugs and a sampler.... I know plenty of folks who use it...and say its great.. And very easy to use...... http://www.computermusic.co.uk/page/computermusic Garry
