1.
Hang on, this isn't an effect, what's this thread doing here?
I know..... But does say including signal processing and effects... And the Avalon does have tone presets.... so that is signal processing ...Maybe.! Not having a bash...but did not know where to post.... And having seen Bassferret getting out his pram over flatwound strings elsewhere... I wanted to avoid all that.. Anyway Alex...i use RIM Basses...so that makes me a nice loving cuddley geezer... Garry
 2. Link working for me now..... Must have been a problem with my connection.. Thanks all... Just waiting near the front door for it to arrive....
 3. Thanks folks... It was getting real spooky here on my own...!! Did try trolling around for a second hand one...with no luck.. plus i needed one pronto... So bit the bullet and went for one new from Thomman... £377.00 inc postage[free] and got some DR'S at the time.. [they are a good price as well..worth checking out] Glad to hear i have made a good move. Just needed to hear some feeedback. As for sitting on Steve's lap...dont like the sound of that...! Think i will leave that up to the Smith.. Hey 99ster That link does not seem to be working...will try later... Steve..not sure you are interested..But over at the Yellowculture.com site.. they are giving away a free sampler with about over a gig and a half of sounds, with more to come over the next few weeks. Its called Independance and the link http://www.yellowtools.us/cp21/cms/index.php?id=782 They are a bit busy at the momnet so be patient. Garry

 7. Has anyone here got or used one..?? [Avalon] I am thinking of getting one for recording purposes and Thomman seem to be the cheapest by a mile. Read plenty of reviews , which all great... but a bit of hands on experiance in use would be good. Garry
 8.
The early SR5s had alnico pickups. They switched to the ceramic magnets with the phantom coil in around 1993 IIRC.
That proberly explains the tonal difference.... My mate has a 1997 , and we did a A/B... I know strings come into play etc... But neverless..it has the old Ray sound/vibe.... So one happy geezer here...!! Garry
 9. This Arrived yesterday... From the evilbay... 1987...i think this is the first year of the 5 strings. The back of the neck is not oiled like the newer ones. To my ears the sound is more like the old Rays... Have they changed the pre's on the newer ones...??? Anyway play's like a dream.. Paid £820.00...proberly a bit over the top for a secondhand Musicman. But it plays and sounds superb......

http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintagebass.html
I picked one of these up for about £100.00 s/h... Great value.... 12.
I've backed Bob Monkhouse on three occasions - Very funny man, he was!
Did a tour show with him...and he was a very clever comic.... In fact to clever...half the time the audiance did not know what he was going on about...i thought he was great... 13.
Check out the first album man, simply titled The Yellowjackets, every song is pure cheesey American Chat show music but it's so good you can't help but smile, and Jimmy Haslip is by far one of the most underrated bassists out there!
A great album...thumbs up for that one... I got to see Jimmy Haslip in Berlin a couple of months back... and he was awsome.. Then got to chat with him for about 1/2 hour after the gig... Top Geezer Garry

 15.
I thought it was something to do with having a better balance when sat down? dont ask me where i heard that, grapevine methinks.
Mine has great Balance when sitting down... and plenty of sustain - but that could be a combination of neck thru and the woods.. Plus i have a really tight 'B' string..which is unusual for a 34 " scale.. Then again , it might all be a load of B.......s...!! And its Just in your fingers.... Dont ask me where i heard that.......... Garry

 24.
I always preferred playing that particular 'bass break' fingerstyle, always cut through nicer through a PA. Si
Interesting you should say that... I watched Rose Royce in the Early 80's in a Cabaret club i was working in watford. And the Bass Player [original] did not slap the break with his thumb..... He patted it with his fingers...hard on the dusty end of the neck... There you go...that should start a riot..!! Garry
