1. Hi All I need to re-introduce myself on here. I am mainly a reader, but was active a good amount of years ago when I first started playing with bass. Ive searched for my old thread but the "your content" doesn't seem to go back that far! So to recap, I'm Dan, late 30's, from northwest region of uk, play guitar mainly and a bit of bass, home player until recently for 20 years, was in a band in my early teens. I'm into mainly indie but like pretty much anything musically (in the last month or so i've been to see indie, pop, punk and ska bands). Since my last stint on here I've just been having the odd play, still mainly a guitar chords man (saying i'm a rhythm guitarist implies a level of ability) but started playing lots more over the last 12/18 months. End of last year i met with a couple of friends for my first Jam in................... 20 years I took along a guitar, a small pedalboard, a bass and rented a bass amp to put it all through- and really enjoyed it! As i was the only guy with a bass there i was prob on the bass as much as i was guitar, and we do plan to meet again (in the next few weeks with any luck) and i've learnt a couple of simple bass parts ready for next time. I suppose one thing leads to another- i live in 2 places and have a bass and a small amp at each, but if this jamming becomes regular I've no doubt I'll be needing to ask daft questions and of course i'll be gassing for kit- it's inevitable! so yes- dullard n00b questions will be flowing onto the boards from me in the not too distant future i imagine. So, hello again all, i hope everyone is good
2. two amps currently (i do spend time in 2 places though!) but may need to get a jam capable one later this year. 1. Laney HCMB15 2. Eden EM15 less watts combined than my granny's wireless
3. Just bought an MXR pedal from Jamie- cannot fault the chap! Great communication, quick delivery, item as described etc etc Thanks a lot mate, top man
4. I have a pickguardian baseplate part of the cover somewhere in my parts box, but i'd rather keep it as its part of my ric's history- IE it wouldn't be worth me selling it for the amount you can get a new one for. I'm pretty sure half of it is missing anyway I'm extremely limited on internet time at the mo- but i like the sound of these pickup surrounds with a "dip" as my rick really could do with one, when i get giddy on my G string (ooerrr) i clank it on the cover, and dont want to re-fit the pickguardian one as i sometimes anchor off the surround depending what i'm playing. I'll be back for a look folks
5. awww what, no ones bought this yet?????? seriously GASsing mate but ends don't meet as it is free bump for a great bass, which should in all rights be mine!
6. its not a faker so a bit offtopic, but this is nice. 4000
7. I've always found this dude's listings "interesting"
Similarly, this Rick 4000: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/70s-RICKENBACKER-400...%3A1|240%3A1318 I own one of these myself. Hardly any original parts left on this one. Been listed for months now, can't think why it's not selling. Cheers, Jake M
Yep not very original but he does say its a thru neck which places it mid 70's or before, just incase someone is stupid enough to be interested
8. thats true that. they are advertised in my local music shop as tokai, but nobody really knows! interesting investigation on the '73 chaps, as said it was a transition year so can be a bugger to determine what should be original! as a rickenlearner (not a rockinbeginner ) when you say "the holes are oval in the bridge" exactly which ones do you mean? the ones in the tailpiece where the strings come through the stop or actually on the bridge itself? apologies if this is a bit of a ricken-noob question.
9. looks nice! same method as used to create my "photoflame" jap strat. Free bump for a nice bass
10. £1,872.00 hope the winner knew. i would never have guessed!
11. I only properly started bass recently when my ex fiancee left me. Lots more time on my hands to do the things i want- and my problems dwindle to oblivion when i'm playing. I mainly work nights and often have a couple of cans and a play at about 7 in the morning for an hour or so before bed- can't get more chilled than that Bass is a great healer (as is a younger bird with larger frontage)
12. it was a fireglo bolt on neck copy with a rick TRC advertised as a real rick, no wonder it got pulled. lets hope it reappears under a different title.........
13. at first i thought that looked like a tokai rockinbetter, but they have thru necks don't they? will be interested to hear from J on this one!
14. overpriced? hondo II P
15. i'm really surprised this hasn't sold! i really fancy it but shouldn't- thinking of selling one of mine to create space! good luck with the sale and free bump
16. i like em too- saw them in '06 at leeds festival- fulfilled one of my musical ambtions seeing the fall live i wasn't disapointed no idea on that gear though......
17.
+1 I've got a few bargain projects&parts from him, never had a problem!
+2 for Mr Digits, I bought my bass from him and he's a great guy to deal with, very friendly too EDIT> PS that looks like a lovely bass, nice purchase
18. Great guy to deal with- and helpful advice wise to us who are beginners too Many thanks mate
19. Hi there, yeah I'm sorry about that- i'm just a little confused with myself at the mo, i do appreciate everyones input and i'm sorry if it offended anyone the way I came across, I didn't mean any harm- it does seem quite abrupt re-reading it. I'm having a bit of time off from playing at the mo (other priorities getting in the way) so when i'm "back on it" I will take a long hard look at it As you say it would be best to nip it in the bud early on, if I can. OK so it will knock me back a bit, but we'll see how it goes As for the fun element- no problems there sir sometimes I just can't put my bass down, I'm loving every minute I spend playing it I can feel my les paul frowning at me
20. some people have a lot of gear! i think its awesome, if you like them and they get a play every now and then, why not? I have a vast collection- one bass but i am only learning, but TBH i really don't think i'll ever want another. although i do suffer from GAS so that may change one day. Its my second bass, and i got rid of my first one before i grew attached to it, like i did my first guitar- which i now cannot part with, despite it being worth about 6 yen. its a different story with guitars though- I have 2 main players, and another 3 and a half (yes i mean that ) in various states of knackeredness.
21. Hi Mate, nice lookin LP- it might help along the sale if you put a year on it perhaps? I'm not interested as I already have one very similar but nice guitar, and a very resonable price. Oh, and free bump
22.
yes, you are correct about "roots" - the "fifth" is the note that is two strings across and two frets down, or alternatively seven frets down the same string from your starting point. There is more to it in melodic terms than that though thats the simple version.

2 strings across and 2 frets down is the octave ("twelfth"). See here. (Note: a "semitone" is, to all intents and purposes, a fret) S.P.
Good stuff- when I think about it a lot of basslines i've mearnt have notes like that in them, and i've even added the odd cheeky one in myself too when it gets to a boring bit  probably not the best idea but its fun! thanks for that to both of you.
That is likely to change over time. Like when you hear proper jazz for the first time The thumb in the middle of the neck is a tried and tested method that facilitates better access theh neck. The other way is like running with a stone in your shoe; yes, you will get there but why would you do it if you didn't have to!
Ha ha nah i'm stuck in the early 90's i'm afraid to say so its just my kinda music i wanna play at the mo. I'll never rule it out though, lots of things change with age Yeah I understand that- but i really dont struggle with a wrapped hand, except when I play the E where I do put my thumb on the back of the neck. I think this is why i'm finding it difficult to break the habit. I suppose what doesnt help is my mostly played 6 string is an LP with a 50's neck (i call it the baseball bat) and my bass has quite a slender neck I think (not really that sure as I havent played many) so maybe as it feels quite similar to my guitar, its not helping me. Also my bass is a little neck heavy comapred to my guitars, and I think I find it easier to cradle the neck most of the time? I always play stood up.
I do a mix of both, as I use my thumb to mute my bottom B.
Ah I see- you know thats one thing i'm also struggling with, on guitar all my muting is done with my left hand, and it seems on bass I struggle to do that, and i'm attempting to learn to do some muting on my picking / plucking hand. Maybe that will come with time- especially now I know its possible cheers
Speaking as a teacher for the last 10-15 years, I can't see any reason why you shouldn't learn with the thumb in the middle of the back of the neck. You will definitely limit what you can play with the "baseball" grip, to the point where even fairly attainable bass lines are unnecessarily difficult. Guitar is a different instrument with a different function - the thumb is often used to grab root notes for chords where the rest of the fingers are on the top 2-3 strings, so there is no choice but to wrap the thumb round. As other threads have mentioned, position playing (i.e., lining up one finger per fret, or double bass-style, index, middle and ring/pinky together) is useful for many things that we commonly play. It is next to impossible with the thumb-wrap left hand. With regard to extended range basses (5+ strings) - muting where possible with the right hand (especially low strings) results in a much cleaner sound and frees up the left hand to fret.
Yeah, i do play lots of notes with my thumb on guitar, especially on E shape full barre chords, but when i change over to A shape ones I transition into a thumb in middle of the neck, like I should be doing all the time on bass. So I've always played guitar by holding its neck however was most most comfortable for what i'm playing at the time, but it seems this is bad practise on Bass. I've never had a guitar lesson in my life either by the way, which is probably why I have bad habits on that too. I will have a look at those lining up of frets, that should enlighten me a bit more to how much i'm limiting myself, thanks for that And by the way- many thanks to all who have posted in this thread, its all good stuff and helping me out, I will find my way eventually thanks a lot people
