1. Quick bump for a box of bassy dirtiness. It's in BD20 if anyone wants to collect, I will knock off the postage cost.
2. I went for an Ibanez BTB 456 (second hand) and I love it. The BTBs are nothing like the SRs at all, I had an SR506 as well and they're just completely different. String spacing is a bit narrower than you're after at 17mm, 19 would be a wiiide neck on a sixer, but they're 35 inch scale, great electronics and they look good IMO.
3. So, I am being strict with myself now and selling things that just aren't getting used, even if I like them. That applies to this pedal, it's a Fairfield Barbershop Millenium, like this: http://fairfieldcirc.../the-barbershop It's in great condition, with its original box and instructions. These pedals work really well on bass, really transparent with no loss of low end or change in tone, just the overdrive coming in on top. The drive is what I would call rough, in a good way, which I think is what makes this pedal a bit different to some of the others. There don't seem to be many decent demos (there are a couple that make the pedal sound pretty bad) so I've tried to do a quick one of what it sounds like on my bass, Ibanez 456 with flat wounds through a Sansamp in Ampeg mode: https://soundcloud.c...rshop-1/s-5syeU The demo is all with the tone switch central, ie no high cut, but there are 2 high cut settings as well for a dark sound. It's just a quick run through the sounds I was using with it. Sorry about the very boring bass line! Looking for £110 posted in the UK. A few pictures, click for bigger versions:
4. There's a basschatter calling in next weekend to have a look at this, so it's now on hold.
5.
I think that all that wear must mean it's been well used . . . . Which must mean someone liked it enough to play it endlessly . . . .which means it's probably a really good bass!
I like your thinking From what I could gather, it was used semi-professionally for a busy covers band. I can't find the video where the guy had gaffer tape on his SR body, but it was in exactly the same places that the wear is on this one. Must be a very different playing style to me, my hand doesn't even touch the body on my bass.
6.
The Brimstone Audio XD-2 and the Creation Audio Labs Grizzly Bass are excellent and transparent pedals for boost clean, crunch, overdrive, and distortion tone.
I just checked out the XD-2, that looks like an amazing pedal. All through trying it these pedals, I've been thinking, "what I really need is a crossover and two overdrives". With everything else there's always a difference between the dirt you get on the low notes compared to the highs (especially with a 6 string). I'm not rating my chances of finding a second hand one though. Makes me wonder about getting a crossover / mixer and having different pedals for high and low, I know that's not a new idea but I bet with some time put in to get it right you can get some awesome sounds.
7.
If you're OK on making your own, then the RunOffGroove Ginger pedal is excellent. (Here.)
Ah, that's so tempting but I'm working really hard to resist getting into pedal building. On top of working on my bass playing and being in an originals band, I'm trying to learn some recording and mixing skills, so I think more projects would lead to divorce
8. Cool, more things to try once I've sold on some of the pedals that havn't worked out. At the moment I'm avoided preamp / DI pedals just to save a bit of space, since everything's going into a Sansamp anyway. The AGRO is getting quite a bit of use now, that's a nice mid gain drive, not really transparent but I happen to like the way it sounds. The Hooker's Green is still the main one for just a touch of dirt. The blower box... that's nice, but I really don't know if I'll use it, we'll see. The Barbershop might get sold on, I like it but not more than the Hooker's Green so it just isn't getting any use. If I sell that and the boneshaker I might have to get hold of a Solid Gold FX Beta to try next.
9. I am reluctantly selling my Ibanez SR506, I love the way it plays but I've got a BTB456 as well and 2 Ibanez 6 stringers is a bit unnecessary. I bought this bass second hand after seeing and playing it, and it has obviously been played a lot, there is a good bit of cosmetic wear & tear. I didn't mind this when I bought it, and it's nice how many people agree that it looks good, it just looks like it's been used. It's in good working order, electronics A OK, machine heads nice and smooth and everything working, and as anyone who's had one of these will know the neck is just excelllent, it's a really playable bass. It's all set up and has a new set or Rotosound medium / light strings, medium at the bottom end so the B is nice and tight and light at the top for noodling. I'm not sure what year it is, but it has the frequency selector for the mid on the EQ so not an early one. There's no shortage of info and reviews out there for these basses, and I'm sure plenty of people know exactly what they're like anyway, renowned for the neck and how they play, and quite lightweight as well which a lot of people like. All the details for this are the same as the current ones: http://www.ibanez.co...d=81&color=CL01 I've taken some pics, but as it's well used it needs a good description of the condition. The finish has worn off the body in several places, that's pretty clear on the pics and these basses are known for doing this, it's that waxy finish they use, you see some with tape on them to stop it happening. Above the pups the wood is actually worn away slightly as well. There are a few marks on the back as well, and the Ibanez logo and model are worn off the headstock (they actually look like someone has rubbed them off). The finish on the machine heads and bridge is worn as well, the photos are maybe a bit flattering in both cases. The finish on the knobs is fine. There is some wear to the frets at the bottom end, I've tried to get pics but they havn't come out really. It's minor, I thought maybe it wanted the frets dressing but once I set it up I found it made no difference so never bothered. Looking for £195, which I think should allow for the cosmetic stuff pretty well. I would really like anyone buying this bass to have a good look and a play before they buy, location is BD20, I'm also going to be in Manchester a few times in the next few weeks (not until the 24th though), and work over Halifax way. A few pics (just click for larger images):
10. The description says SFX Mini Thumpinator, but it looks like a micro? but it has a knob on it... is it just an older model micro one? I am easily confused
11.
What's the Blowers midrange like? Every time I hear one I can't decide if it sounds scooped or not! Either way, VERY cool sounding pedal!
I know what you mean, it's an interesting sound. I've got the treble back at 9 o'clock and the bass up to 3 o'clock on mine and I don't think that sounds scooped - I don't really like scooped mids, the more I try things the more I find flat eq works best for me.
12. After a lot more playing, I decided not to keep the BB, it's got loads of low end but it's a bit "fizzy" for me. Glad I tried it though. I did buy a Blower Box though and I love it, I may not even use it in the current band but I'm keeping it even if it's just for my own stuff @ home. It's not really part of the overdrive hunt though, it's a bit of a tangent and another different sound. Nice and rough and bassy when it's set up right. Still loving the Hooker's Green and the Barbershop for low gain stuff, they're staying. Both nice and different to each other. I've also got hold of an Aguilar AGRO to try, that's kind of nice but it seems to go quite suddenly from nearly clean to distorted, the saturation knob seems very sensitive for my setup. I'll try that with the band for a bit and see how it fits in. The Vintage Microtubes has gone, swapped for a DOD Boneshaker on a whim as the EQ looked good - I was distinctly unimpressed by that though, I thought the distortion was a bit lame. Never mind.
13. Bought a Blower Box from Ryan and everything was hunky dory, he sent it when I asked (I was away for a few days) and packed it up well enough to easily survive the courier apparently playing footie with the package . Recommended, thanks Ryan.
14. Occasional bump, really nice filter at a decent price. Offers and trades considered.
15. I've just bought an Aguilar AGRO from Steve and it really was a pleasure doing business, excellent communication, really helpful and came and met me to hand over the pedal. Thanks Steve!

Kev's Feedback

Did a pedal swap deal with Kev and everything was super smooth and easy, deal with confidence. Thanks Kev!
17. Back from hols now and the Proton is still available, I'll be in London from Tuesday for a few days so might be able to drop it off
18. So, the Xotic BB Bass Preamp turned up yesterday, and I love it. That's what I was after for more full on overdriven sound. So I seem to have settled on Hooker's Green Bassmachine for low gain, BB preamp for mid, and then maybe a couple of others for something different, the barbershop I might keep just for that and maybe something that colours the tone more like a Blower Box. The Vintage Microtubes will be flipped, even though I can see why people like them.
19. I bought an Xotic BB Pramp from Harry, all very quick and easy and good communication, I would happily deal again, thanks Harry!
20. I'll be in away from Saturday morning (8th August), I'll still get my messages but won't be able to post the pedal until I get back. 18th - 20th I'll be in London so could drop the pedal off if anyone London based was after it.
21. The Vintage Microtubes is starting to slip down the ratings for the full on overdrive slot, it has a very distinctive sound which a lot of people obviously love but which isn't doing it for me. It should be easy enough to sell on anyway. That would leave the mid gain slot open, and I still fancy a go on a Blower Box for that, there seem to be a few about but they're not cheap. I'm guessing this is because there's no UK dealer and you have to get them from the US. The Hooker's Green is holding on to it's low gain slight dirt spot after it's first gig, and from what I have read on here it's very similar to a Blueberry so it's probably got that covered. I'll keep my eye out for the some of those other suggestions as well, SGFX Beta, AGRO and the EHX ones should be easy enough to pick up second hand.
22. Sold Nick my POG-2, it was a pleasure dealing with him, everything clear and easy. No hesitation in recommending a top basschatter, cheers Nick!
23. Lots of really good suggestions to look into there, thanks everyone!
24.
I presume you've tried just cranking the gain on the RBI ... in what way is this not working for you (since on paper its designed to do exactly what you want) ?.
It is quite nice, but I have a "clean" sound and a dirtier sound, so I'm using the RBI with low drive (and no presence) for the clean(ish) version. I know I could turn the RBI on and off with a footswitch but I much prefer the RBI on with low drive to the RBI off. So the RBI is my "always on" sound and I'm looking for pedals to dirty that up a bit for our heavier songs. It seems to work really well like that with low gain ODs like the Hooker's Green, it's not just a more suitable sound, it fills the space up a bit more and sort of gives a fuller sound for the guitar to sit on top of. I'll probably end up with 3 tones, clean, slightly dirty and dirty, maybe even a 4th for nasty dirty (the Barbershop does that well), so I'll probably use 2 or 3 drive pedals live, one at a time.
