[/quote] Some DAWs can only use vst effects, and not vst instruments. So despite saying they are vst compatible, they can only use vst compressors/distortions etc, and not vst drum machines/synths etc.

So some DAWs that say they can use VST plugins is a bit misleading, as they can only use vst effects but not vst instruments - like drum machines.

I've had a look at a lot of them, and have downloaded Kristal Audio Engine. At the moment it looks like controls for the Enterprise, so I've a lot of reading to do before I actually try and use it!

Ok, so I'm a complete numpty with all this computer recording malarkey, but I'm determined to take the first tentative steps. So advice needed. Ease of use is the priority, please do not underestimate my lack of ability with this kind of thing - I am yet to find an 'initiative interface' which I have found intuitive lol. I want to be able to record guitars and create my own drum patterns. If I get the hang of it I'll think about upgrading, but at the moment the plan is to start with the free stuff and see how it goes. Any recommendations? Cheers!

I use a Johnson J Station for guitar (and bass) and I'm trying to mimic the kind of natural compression you get from a valve amp - with distortion - so that I can use one sound without changing anything for lead and rhythm playing. Attached is a screen shot of my Johnson, showing the compressor. I know ultimately it's all about using my ears but I'd appreciate some help to get started

Skinny, from the Quireboys plays a Vintage (brand) LP. He really rates them and there are a lot of YouTube clips with him using it in place of his Gibson. Someone on here was recently selling one for a good price.

I use 11's on my guitars, I would use 12's but I haven't found any that come with an unwound G. My G has to be unwound as I bend it while soloing and that.

You can polish a turd - if you freeze it. Dunnery is a stunning guitarist, much underrated. If you go to the Globe theatre and the actors are not in costume does it matter? A stage is a stage, and a band is putting on a performance so dressing up matters.
