1. Another album that I'd term as a 'classic', and would definitely merit a (re)visit, is Aladdin Sane by David Bowie. Remember buying it as a kid from Boots (yep, they stocked records once upon a time) in Coventry and played it to death. Still sounds incredible today - and the lyrics make a bit more sense today then they did back then to a young kid!
2. New Boots and Panties!! - Ian Dury
3.
I like his playing on 'Miles Of Aisles' and 'The Hissing...' as well. Love Jaco, but Max's playing suits some of Joni's material equally IMHO. What a choice!
I agree. Two great players offering completely contrasting styles/approaches. It's similar to Weather Report... there's a host of non-Jaco stuff that gets overlooked - Alphonso Johnson/Cucumber Slumber being right up there.
4. I'm a big Joni fan - mentioned on a different thread the superb bass line on Don't Interrupt the Sorrow by Wilton Felder - but the genius of Pastorius on Hejira can sometimes lead to other amazing moments being overlooked. Max Bennett's bass line on Song for Sharon is a masterclass of understated melodic brilliance. The lyrics aren't bad either..
5. Not sure it gets more funky or groovy than this.. Also comes from a time when albums had proper titles (this is off A Blow For Me, A Toot To You).. Four Play by Fred Wesley & the Horny Horns (also featuring Maceo Parker and Bootsy on bass). 6. Sometimes it's the 'easier' things that cause problems - and I wouldn't go anywhere near something like Donna Lee etc as I wouldn't know where to start. The oddest one that still causes me problems to this day is finding the 'one' after Bonham's intro on Zeppelin's Rock and Roll. Not tight, and definitely loose.. I would definitely say that things like YouTube have really helped players learn stuff these days, what with all the lessons/tabs etc. Spent years trying to learn Rhythm Stick and minutes on YouTube fixing the mistakes.
7.
He also played bass and sax on the Crusaders song Street Life. Awesome.
I forgot he was part of the Crusaders (had Chuck Rainey in my head, for some reason). Yeah, he's definitely a special musician. I Want You Back is enough to retire on..
8. (First post, so here goes...) Really like Don't Interrupt the Sorrow off Joni Mitchell's Hissing of the Summer Lawns. It's played by Wilton Felder and sounds like a P-Bass with a pick and flats. Or is it a Jazz Bass with fingers and flats. Or... He also played the great bass line on I Want You Back by The Jackson 5 and is a top sax player.. An annoyingly good musician.
