1. this is probably going to be a mostly useless post, because i don't really remember how i taught myself, but i remember that i would just sit there and go up and down the open strings and back, like E-A-D-G-D-A-E-A-D.... and so on, usually while watching tv or something to get my mind off of the mindlessness of it. but by double thumbing each string, you become really comfortable playing that technique, and can then move on to play lines and stuff.
2. I used to work at maplin and tbh none of their cables would be up to the task. Some decent quality mulit-core ought to do it though, such as here. I'm sure obbm can sort something out for you along those lines. EDIT: Sorry, should have linked here.
3. bump.
4. what about using the cables you already use, wrapped in something like this?
5. also one or two of these and a sheet of plywood will do the job, and save you a considerable amount of money.
6.
+1 for ER20's.
+2 obviously the molded ones are better, but it depends what you can afford.
7.
You'll ideally want screened cable. The sort of levels going into headphones is about the same as line level, so it makes sense you'd want similar cable. A
It's not necessary really though, as there are no gain stages at that point. the only possibility of noise would be if it got into the amplifier via a negative feedback loop within the amp. To answer the OP, it will be tricky to replace those wires, what if you just got an extension cable to plug them into? I couldn't tell you about the driver without knowing the headphones involved.
8.
It is interesting to see how MXR/Dunlop changed their opinion about voltage pumps.
I'd imagine it's because a lot of people cba to have a separate supply just for their dunlop pedals. Some of which weren't designed so great in the first place. *cough blowtorch cough*
9.
go for the eb12-180,be better than the 5-15 imo.
+1
10. if it was me, i would try to pick up a mag 15 combo, you can get them secondhand for around the 200 mark. not very large, not very heavy, decently loud, reliable, good tone, etc.
11.
Jeez - I thought i was sad! Thats nice though, can't beat the appeal of a tight loom.
i'm sad, i know. you hardly ever see that sort of thing nowdays though.
12.
I can't believe I've still got exactly the same gear as I had in 1985. It was old then! Still, I thoroughly endorse H&H products - the finest bass amps ever made. Before that I had a Selmer Treble 'n'Bass valve amp which had more warmth and depth but didn't suit the Wal so much. Most modern amps sound rubbish to my ears. You've probably noticed my 100 watt amp head has seen better days - it's missing knobs and buttons and even survived a fire in a studio. I've lost the 4 x12 cab from the band days (can't remember what I did with it) so I've used the 15" combo for the gigs ever since. It's a little erratic to say the least, surging up and down in volume of its own accord. I've tried to have it fixed but many engineers have tried and failed. It's the pre amp part of the H&H I really like. It's a perfect marriage for the Wal (which tends to be very dynamic and I think really needs a compressor. The H&H compressor does the job. The H&H Studio 60 (to give it its full title) is a big fruity amp that weighs a ton. I wrote "this speaker talks bullshit" on it when I was drunk and I'm still looking for the right cleaning product to remove the offensive lettering. I tried for years to find an engineer willing to extract the pre amp from the main amp head ... to no avail. It would have been really handy to take it in a little box with me when I was doing loads of foreign gigs in the 90's. If anybody knows someone who can do this let me know. In the meantime I should try and find a small 12" cab to go with the amp head...so if anybody has one for sale let me know.
Always good to meet a like-minded individual. I cannot say enough good things about HH, I wouldn't even know where to start. This may interest you along with this. Also, I may be able to help you with your pre-amp situation, PM me if you're interested.
13. the wire looms. Inside an HH Bass Machine (photos taken before electronics restoration work, however it more or less looks the same): Inside the bass: Inside the cab (not much to see though):
14. Have used the tapco and behringer mixers, for my money it's the Peavey PV6, every time.
15.
What's the square thing? An amp?
it looks like it's got footswitches so maybe an effect of some kind?
16. black is usually the ground and will connect to the sleeve of a jack plug. red will connect to the tip. provided you keep it consistent for all the connections to that amp, and aren't using any other amps, it doesn't really matter which way you do it.
17. lots of bass, lots of mids, lots of volume. i love my rig
18. haha I just noticed this thread, I've got you all beat Over 4 years, only one bass, a Yamaha RBX170, with a bunch of stuff added to it about a year ago.
19. we've done a lot of recording on one of the older black ones running logic 8 and a motu 8pre, and never had any issues. in fact, i'd highly recommend it. as someone else has mentioned, i'd recommend having a firewire port on there.
20. Not bad, you've probably pointed out already all the things i would say. Snare def needs some work, needs eq'ing and possibly is a bit too loud in the mix. I've had good luck before actually micing up both sides of the snare with 57's or whatever your preferred mic is. the toms aren't sounding that bad actually, if it was me i would probably bring them up in the mix a bit, and do some eq'ing as well. but pretty good, really. the kick is sounding good, and the cymbals are sounding good as well, although i think the cymbals could probably benefit from being a bit louder as well, and with a bit of EQ. i feel like they're missing a bit of the really high end as well, that gives it a bit more open sound. if it was me (having done much worse my first few times), i'd be quite happy with that edit: fwiw i've listened to it twice now and enjoyed listening to it, so it can't be that bad
21.
not sure if that qualifies as lightweight
considering that three of your 2x15's would weigh about as much as my 2 1x15's, i'd say yes
22.
Juast got a reply back from marshall: After speaking to one of our engineers they have said that re-soldering the joint could have solved the problem but if you would like to send the cabinet back through the dealer we would be happy to check it over for you to make sure it is working fine. I will pass the e-mail and photos on to the R+D department and Quality Control so the issue will be raised and looked in to.
Wow, better result than I got from EHX. Found 3 dry joints, a crushed capacitor, and some other faulty issues with my compressor -- and the best they had to say was to get in touch if I needed a repair, not a word about passing it on to QC or any indication that they gave a sh*t. Judging by the HC reviews, the issue I had is very common, you'd think EHX would have paid more attention. But nice one Marshall, they've surprised me.
23.
"Snowflakes are dancing" - Isao Tomita Electronic versions of Debussy pieces recorded in the 1970s on early synthesisers - before you call me a pussy, I got it because JJ Burnel said it was one of his favourite albums (as did the guy from Prefab Sprout although I'm not a fan of theirs)
Haha I love Tomita...never known anyone else who's ever even heard of them, never mind listened to them. listening to: Nonpoint - March of War
24.
Perhaps I'm being silly too, but maybe the guitarists could play a little softer while you're soloing?
guitarists? softer? don't be ridiculous!
25. what if you were to make a cheap signal attenuator, put it in line after your effects, and turn it off for solo's (hence boosting the volume by however much it was attenuated?) could do the whole thing from a place like maplin for under a tenner, if you know how to solder.
