  1. Ray - I think all things considered I prefer the AH600. I've had it long enough to know how to get a great tone out of it whatever I'm working with, and the tone with everything flat is a great starting point. It just sounds, for want of a better word, right. For me anyway. The V-Type is good at what it does, but from what I'd read about the V-type I was expecting some kind of amazing tube tone straight off the bat. It just doesn't seem as versatile and I find the EQ a bit limited, but then I'm comparing it to a 12 band... The other pro for the V-type is the weight, the AH600 is a monster. It's heavier than the 2x10! Also, I think I prefer the tube breakup on the AH600 to that of the V-type. Maybe I just need to change the tubes or something? Ferret - Fair enough, I'd like to hear Alex and Bill's opinions regarding this setup compared to a 210/115 setup. I don't know about dispelling the myth entirely, but in this case it was, at least to my ears.
  2. Merton - I'm really enjoying using the V-Type for recording, I haven't had a chance to gig it yet. The last couple of sessions I've done were with Silver Leaf and Pellow, both on fretless. The Pellow tracks are up on his myspace now if you fancy giving it a listen (i think they're still unmixed though and the bass seems way boomier on the myspace than the mp3s I have...). I find for fretted bass I prefer the AH600 though, usually just with the EQ off. The fretless works nicely with it too but for most of the stuff I'm doing at the moment it's a little too hifi. Jazz - I'm not looking forward to the day my back gives up, can't beat the trace tone though! Ferret - Surely I'm still mixing drivers? Although they're all tens it's eminence betas in the 2x10 and peavey ones in the 410, and the enclosures themselves are surely tuned differently anyway? Whatever's going on I'm enjoying the sound. The 15 never really did it for me, even by itself, was hoping it'd have a lot more lowend than it did, sounded almost more midrangey than the 210, or at least had a less 'round' sounding bottom end but without the punchier highs of the 210. Edit - By the way, the pellow tracks with fretless and v-type on are piece of mind and absent mind! Cheers!
  3. So here it is, Trace V-Type pre and PPA300 bought from Gwilym, peavey 4x10 bought from jhk yesterday, AH600SMX bought from John Giblin a couple of years ago and a peavey 2x10 from funnyfreddie back on bassworld. Now depending on which band I'm playing with I can use whichever amp is most suitable with just the 2x10 for little gigs, medium gigs with the 4x10 and big gigs with the pair of them. And it sound great, I thought the 2x10 and 15 handled the low B fine, but with this new setup I've realised what I've been missing out on. Lovely, if I may say so myself The only downside is the weight, but frankly I can't justify spending loads on state of the art stuff, so while I'm young and my back holds out I reckon I'll manage and spend the rest on beer and pizzas. Cheers, Tom
  4. This is now mine, I can confirm that Jon is a great guy to deal with, the cab is working perfectly and I now have a lovely setup Cheers again Jon! Tom
  5. Galli? The guy from bass merchant seemed to think so last time i was down there with my fretless. The bass gallery put them on when i asked for a set of elites nickels. Roundwound, black silk, sounded nice...
  6. Does it have a footswitch thing on the back? I'm assuming no from the wording, but just in case...
  7. Hey, www.bluearan.co.uk are supposed to be good. I got a couple of eminence betas for my peavey 210 recently form jpgelectronics. they were good, only had 1 speaker in stock although the website said 4 in stock. sent the first one through quickly and the 2nd one came in sooner than they said it would. they kept me up to date with the situation and were polite and apologetic throughout.
  8. If this was a five I'd be sorely tempted. Did they do a 5 string version?
  9. Well I've got the longest strapp. I've got it at it's shortest at the front, and pretty much longest at the back. But I find if I pull the neck up towards 45 degree, maybe a little more, I get the plastic bit digging in to the front of my shoulder. I'm 6'6" tall though, and play it with the bottom of the bass around hip height, maybe a little lower...
  10. When we played at Beach Break down in Polzeath we found loads of nature's plectrums on the beach. Right size and shape, made from stone. Sound pretty good but leave a weird deposit on the strings.
  11. Haha, good move Gareth, I'll have a word with my old dear...
  12. They're good, I've got one too, but depending on the angle you have your bass at you can end up with the plastic bit right on your shoulder, which makes the nice big comfy neoprene bit kind of redundant... ah well, they're fine apart from that.
  13. Haha true, but better to be safe than sorry I s'pose? Cheers, Tom
  14. If it all falls through with Wayne, can I call shotgun!?
  15. No need luckily, got one of the speakers through (the other one is on its way as i type), took the old one out, realised it's just little pushfit connectors. so no chance of me bodging it beyond repair/dropping solder on the cone etc. Sounds fine as far as i can tell, guess it will take a couple of gigs to get it bedded in, will give you a progress report once that's happened. Cheers again for all the help guys, and here's hoping I never have to solder, ever.
  16. I seem to remember Anderton's in Guildford stocking them... Not 100% but remember seeing something that looked very similar (big massive bridge etc) in the window a year or two ago. Pretty ugly in my opinion but each to their own
  17. Does no one use elites anymore? Can't beat a set of 5 string elites nickels for £16 quid from stringbusters! Way better than rotos imho...
  18. This was mine, never used it and then swapped it with gui for a still boxed 3u shallow rackbag. he's a great guy to deal with!
  19. Hey Tom, Looks like a sterling bit of work dude! Have you got a double bass now? Is that a lefty or is the pic reversed? Gigged it yet? I'm still working up the nerve to gig my stagg electric upright thing. Fun messing about on it though... When you gigging in the ldn next? Have a good one mate, Tom
  20. Haha yeah definitely overpriced mike! Cheeky buggers... Yeah I've got the 8 ohm version, the beta 10a. So should be fine, now just gotta remember how to solder
  21. Hello Bill, cheers for the advice, I've gone for the Beta 10. I can get 2 of them for only about £30 more than one of the peavey ones... I checked the cab with a battery by the way, the working speaker moves, the other one just sits there. So yeah, thanks for the advice everybody, much appreciated!
  22. I'd love this but I really don't have anything like that much money at the moment. My options are save and hope this doesn't sell, or get 2 new speakers for my peavey 2x10
