As already posted, I'm in danger of turning into a Sandberg fan-boy. Must say I don't find their website too easy to navigate though. As far as I can see (which isn't very far nowadays), no mention anywhere of a short-scale bass, even though I've got one!! A strange omission as it's one of the best shorties I've ever played. A super-light cedar-bodied s-s would be something. You'd have to hold on tight at outdoor gigs to stop it blowing away.

Well done Frank my old mate! As the saying goes (almost), you're obviously "Happy as a dog with three knobs!" Must say I'm equally happy with my short-scale Sandy, even though I've only got two knobs (!!). Looking forward to seeing yours at the S-W Bash... ooh-err, better stop now before the mod's shut this down 🤐

Correct! I'll get my coat...

I think mis-use of apostrophe's (!?) should result in instant excommunication. 😉

Thanks Rich. For me Basschat is one of the real and constant joys in life. Membership of this forum and looking forward to the next S-W Bash have helped me keep chipper throughout covid (OK, regular shots of GAS have helped too). See you on 19th September 🙂

Why so many short scale basses at the moment?
scrumpymike replied to Greg Edwards69's topic in Bass Guitars
IIRC, this one has a sub-30" scale, so more like the USS club, where U = ultra. Given that it's also headless, you should be able to slip it into your pocket. -
Early days yet but feels like Sandberg are unexpectedly moving from zero to hero in my world. I just love discovering new stuff!

Congratulations Bernard! As expected, that is a thing of great beauty and I know from experience how good Alan’s work is. Shame I didn’t know about him when we lived up in the Borders. I think I would have been a regular visitor. -
That's lovely. I assume SL = Super Light but what scale-length/nut-width is it?

Same here - everything at TDC with the occasional tweak of the 'Enhance' voicing knob. -

Apologies for going off topic but looks like I've found a fellow member of the Eden WTX-264 fan club! Not many of us around but I think these are great little amps and that baked-in Eden tone works well with the vibes that s-s basses generate. Can't see what your cab is but I run mine thru a BF One10 and it sounds sublime. -

My body is feeling the effects of wear and tear after all these years so I set my basses up for minimum playing effort.

Also worth mentioning the nice 3-string guide on the headstock, the standard Sandberg strap-pins that also work with Schaller strap locks, and the neat little spec/maintenance leaflet explaining how to adjust the bridge and truss-rod. Relatively trivial stuff I know but this attention to detail tells a story. OK, I'll shut up about it now! 😐 -

Around 3.75kg at a guess, perfect balance with top strap pin at F11, and (for me) correct positioning on the strap - i.e. strings anchored close to the edge of the body for easy reach to lower frets. Great access to top frets too. This bass oozes quality in terms of body/neck/fretboard finish, hardware, 6-point neck fixing, and inclusion of a zero fret, which I always like. It's a s-s bass that feels substantial to play. -
Finally got round to grabbing a pic of my recently acquired (off this FS forum) Cali s-s. Jazz Flats fitted, just completed my usual super-low set-up by doing the intonation, and I think this is a keeper - even though my two Andy Rogers 30"-scale custom builds will always be my go-to gig basses. I can honestly say I'm deeply impressed with my first Sandberg. It's the best sub-£1500 'manufactured' s-s bass I've played. http://

Why so many short scale basses at the moment?

Fyi, I'm really loving my Sandberg California short-scale P-bass. For some inexplicable reason it's officially called 'Lionel', which would have been enough to stop me buying one if the name had actually appeared on the bass itself. Anyway, for me it's the best of the 'branded' s-s basses I've tried and, apart from the normal P-bass limitations (i.e. single pup and two pot's), plays as nicely as my Andy Rogers custom-built basses. Neck measures 40mm at the nut, which is my preference. I'll post a pic as soon as I've taken a decent one. -

Much simpler for me. Short-scale is my only real option nowadays if I want to keep gigging. -
...and anyone else who appreciates good music with a bigger than average dose of great bass vibes. Scott has been burning some lockdown hours on producing his first solo EP and this video is a taster. https://youtu.be/vsecejgH1HU I have no connection with Scott other than owning a few of his excellent SWB-1 basses and benefitting from his free advice and online tutorial stuff in the past.

As you would expect from the difference in gauge and construction, the La Bellas are noticeably stiffer/more substantial. Should add that low tension and action (within reason) are top of my wish list to extend my active gigging life by minimising wear and tear on my hands. I seem to get that from the La Bellas with drop tuning and from the TIs drop-tuned. All very subjective though.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!

Question for you Mustang lovers out there. I've never owned one but played in a band a few years back where the lead singer/guitarist insisted I tried an old Mustang that he'd rescued from a skip and brought back to life. It was such a nice bass and fitted in the mix so well that I carried on gigging it. The only thing I could fault for what I need now is that tonally it was a bit of a one-trick pony. What sort of tonal range do you get from the latest PJ Mustangs? I wouldn't want to lose that wonderful smooth, warm roundness, just looking for more versatllity. -
Just for info while we're on the subject of s-s strings, my custom-built s-s gig basses are strung with La Bella Deep Talkin' Flats. I absolutely love those strings and won't be changing them as my classic rock covers band plays drop-tuned to Eb and I think tension would be borderline with the TIs. PS The La Bellas are the perfect length for 30"-scale basses with normal bridges.
