1. First Bass: Encore Coaster Bass - Precision Copy. "Go To" Bass: Cort GB74. My Bass: Cort GB74. Balcro.
2. If you want the lower end of the market, try my bass, the Cort GB74. Not the last word in sonic excellence but has a real variety of sounds available because of the 3-way switchable coils and a low-mid boost switch. Add to that the volume switch also acts as an active/passive push-pull. For sound samples, check out youtube for GB74/75/94 and there are a few more examples on wikizic.org Balcro.
3.
Dar dar daaa that's by Trio isn't it ;) different spelling cos das ist foreigner's
Thanks for that tip. This rookie nailed the bass line by the end of the video. Balcro.
4. Sounds like you've got plenty of grit and determination. Good on yer! Just by way of nothing and an idea that's been getting to me 'cos I keep watching TV commercials and hearing this song again and again - it's been on at least twice tonight. What is that song? I don't know; do you know what it is; No. Dar dar daaa, listen to the music, dar de dar dar dar..... Had to "Ask" it just now - Doobie Bros. Aahhh. A bit more country than the Average White Band, but similar era and really crafted. Give it try. Balcro.
5. I'm home based and just 63; 4-string and finger-style. Once in a while I meet up with a friend who's really a folky guitarist, so obviously that feels limiting, 'cos I'm inclined play all sorts of stuff from Rock to Motown to blues, whatever catches my ear. As a youngster I sang in church and school choirs and learned piano so I can read music. Now I've added tab ( the latter seems easier with the bass), but I mainly use my ears when listening to learn. Because you never hear it right first time, you have to do it again and again - more of challenge that way. Then in a random post, along comes a more advanced Basschatter and says (to someone else)" don't forget the twiddly rundown from the chorus...". Whaaat?! May my hands fall into acid if I ever start slapping 'n poppin'. No bass musical influences or brand loyalty, so I don't want anyone's particular sound or style. When I can play "Crossroads" as well as Jack Bruce's original, I'll be happy. Balcro, or as BurritoBass would have it, Fat Sugar Hopkins.
6. I used them once and it was a positive experience. Bought my Cort from there and a gig-bag. They quoted up to 7 days for my choice of delivery and it arrived in 6. Customer service, when enquiring about guarantee, was polite and in good English. Purhase outside the UK ( change of buying pattern) prompted a call from my credit card company - good. They send follow-up e-mails about once a month. No problem Balcro.
7. Oh, it's him again. I first heard of Russ Andrews about 35 years ago. In those days he was just another hi-fi dealer who happened to get involved with the design and marketing of a product called the Nytech receiver (tuner-amp). It had great reviews. I've still got the tuner half downstairs in the cupboard. It's called an Edinburgh Wireless Co. tuner. cost me £100 in 1976. I forgot about hi-fi in the early 80's but he didn't. He's been peddling this sort of stuff for years. Completely wacky over-the-top nonsense, but it must sell, presumably to America and now the Middle East. Probably a multi millionaire by now. One day he'll probably market a product that's been cleaned with a pulse of nuclear energy. Balcro
8.
Anybody noticed how the prices of basses have shot up in the last few days? I know there was the VAT increase, but they seem to have gone up again across the board. Only noticed as last week I paid £289 for my CV P - by mid-last week they were around £296 with the VAT increase, but now everywhere is charging £319 for the range! Looked at some other sites, and all prices seem to have gone up on many basses.....happy new year??!!
Try over the Channel. Woodbrass.com are still selling them at £289. Euroguitar are only slightly dearer. I think French VAT is 19.6%. Balcro.
9. A sort of distant , tough-love sort of guy your Dad. Guitar player, hmmm? Bass player ? Well, I'd start with your favourite songs and remind yourself why you like them? When did you first hear them, what were the surroundings/social situation at the time, was there something inspirational in the songs? Was there something in the song(s) that made laugh, cry, jump up and down with joy. Now go away and play them. Then play them with a twist. Emphasise certain notes and not others. Drop in some notes played behind the beat; bend some notes. All the little frills you already know. Make the bass line your own. When you feel comfortable with YOUR lines, go and get a lesson or two from a basschatter and get to work on "expression". No need to tell your Dad about the lessons. What drives this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGuEagHDL9M Is it the song, is it the iconic American 40 year-old restored loudspeaker, is it the patriotic fist pumping, is it the facial expressions? Sure, it's a performance. But hell no, it's all of these and more. Go for it. Good luck. Balcro. PS. Play it loud!
10. I think understated is his trademark. Listen to the tracks "Really" and Albert's Shuffle" on the "SuperSession" album. Someone had to counter the wildness of Mike Bloomfield. Few frills, but the tracks wouldn't be the same without him. Balcro.
11. Well, I saw the line up and wasn't expecting too much. Only saw/heard it from 11.25 up to midnight and then had to rush around separating two antagonisitic cats when the fireworks went off. More fireworks outside than on the box. The whole vibe seemed wrong. Too many slow boring introspective ballads. Alison Moyet, Rumer (only heard her from the kitchen), the Secret Sisters, Ce-Lo Green . The talent may well be there, but I don't need four like that on the same bill. It's New Years Eve people, let's party. Balcro.
12. After BassBunny please. Balcro.
13.
OK - I think I'll probably go for a high sensitivity neo PA driver instead then. Thank you for the reply.
Why are proposing a PA speaker? Presumably you mean PA as in "Public Address". Balcro.
14.
Eminence BP102-4 Anyone have a cab using one or more of these? If so, any opinions? I'm intending to make a 1x10" cab to use with 250-300W amps, not intending to use extension cabs therefore 4ohms. It's rated at a rather weak hifi-esque 90.5dB/W/m but I've compared the freq curve to speakers rated at 98-99 and most of the usable frequencies are only 2-3dB down, and there's a big dip in the 500-2k range, which I normally filter down with EQ or an unorthodox crossover that leaves a dip to compensate for where a speaker tends to "honk" (often around 2-2.5k). A higher sensitivity speaker wouldn't be effectively any more useful if the gains were in that middle range where I'd just have to get more creative to filter those frequencies out... If the consensus is that it kicks out plenty of welly per given watts then I'll get one.
From looking at the Eminence .pdf and at usspeaker.com, it would suggest that this unit is mainly intended for use in multiples. The latter suggests it would be good in an Ampeg 8x10. On it's own it will be loud but not stunningly loud. Only 100w power handling. There's also an 8 ohm version available. Balcro.
15. I don't see any reason to exclude tab, I've found it very useful in learning lines. Perhaps your need will depend on the target audience. As a bass player who came to bass guitar, late in life, it's invaluable. Apart from "guitars" do any other instruments use TAB? I started to learn piano music when I was 6 and worked my way up to Grade 7, but jumping to "guitar" with lines way off the stave was a shock to the eye and the brain. TAB would certainly ease the transition for those like me who have come to bass/guitar from other non-guitar-like instruments. When I'm playing along to tracks and checking out the bass music/tab book, TAB just provides the bare notes. Once I've got the bare notes I move onto fingering. When I feel more comfortable with the basic line, I refer back to the notation for the feel/expression. Balcro.
16.
Due to increasing pain in my neck and shoulders, I am on the lookout for a decent 4-string bass that is also very lightweight. Not to bothered about cost, because I could sell a bass or two to cover it. I play mainly covers, so a bit of versatility would be useful. I've already gone down the lightweight amp route, with my Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 12 combo. Any suggestions on a decent bass? Thanks in advance!
The lightest bass I've come across (which isn't extra cheap) is the Ibanez SR500. Must be under 8lbs. Modern sound but doesn't do "a jazz". It's even lighter than my Cort.
17.
I'm proud of playing at Glastonbury and T in the Park. I'm proud of playing on channel 4 twice, all by the age of 20. I'm not proud of the fact I still feel like it was the strength of the musicians I was playing with on all occasions that got me there! I suppose there is some skill in being in the right place at the right time...
Silddx obviously had you in mind when he did the original post. You're so British! Good on yer! If you weren't good enough to play there, then the other musicians would have dumped you. They didn't, so you're good enough. Put it on your headstone. Balcro.
18. When searching for a bass about a year ago, I played into a "60" in my local shop. Very nice too. Although it's almost double the money, I'd go for that one, mainly because of the convenience of having an "aux-in" socket. With that you can "play along" to tracks from various sources; i.e CD/mp3 players etc,. Put headphones on and you should be able to play along in silence. That still leaves the effects loop free for a pedal. Balcro.
19.
You are the only one who appreciates it My Band mates think im mad
I appreciate your avatar too. Balcro.
20. Next time, don't walk by, go in and ask. I've done it many a time. The staff think you're mad/weird, but the distraction makes their day and yours if you find out what it is. Balcro.
21.
Whoa, those are some awesome amps, i guess you are one big acoustic fan!. I'm gonna checkout ebay and see what i can find. The thing is i've had bad experiences shipping stuff, but that was using standard shipping, i didn't used FedEx, or UPS, or DHL or any of those (Lucky it was only a cheap pedal). Anyway in case i don't find anything. The 300W Eminence Speaker Delta 15-A i saw on the shop in my city , has 40HZ of frequency response, and 100 of sensitivity. Would that help? btw, thanks everyone who took the time to answer.
As Bumnote says that Delta 15-a is designed as a P.A speaker. If you can't find a trusted design as BFM suggests, check out Eminence's web-site - Guitar/Bass speakers - Bass - Speaker size. Why not send them an e-mail for support and ask their advice on a trusted design. Why not try the same with www.usspeaker.com. A fair number of choices from 85 - 130$ per unit. If you're not sure about their advice, come back here. Good luck. Balcro.
22. From looking at the "acoustic.homeunix" site it seems the higher powered version was only produced in 1981/2. Refer back to that Forum and quote the amp serial number. The members there will be sure to help you. As for the speakers, please be more specific about the model number for example Delta Pro 12a or Delta 10a, or Delta 12b etc. Or whatever is available locally. I assume from your post that you only want to use 1 loudspeaker drive unit. Balcro.
23. Only 5 miles from me in Hitchin. As the bass department is upstairs it's good to be able to go in and get little disturbance from the screechers on he ground floor. They set me up with a BIG Roland combo and left me to my own devices. Played everything I wanted without a hassle. Nice. Balcro.
24. I use Opera browser. It works on one computer all the time and most of the time on another. I don't need a homepage , so it's Blank & Blank. No search bars either. Googles first bar was known to be a security risk. I wouldn't touch Facebook with a barge-pole either. Google only gets used if I'm desperate and that 's about twice a year. They don't need my clicks. Balcro.
25. Hi Andy, I 've only spotted this thread today. The aesthetics on those prototypes look great. Just one thought. The choice of an ash body. I'm all in favour of that, having enjoyed the dramatic difference, in switching from a basswood precision clone. Ash just sings. However, the reduced body weight can bring about a big change in the overall balance. Are you able to guage the balance of this project? All the best to you and Farida with the project. Balcro.
