Playing at an outdoor festival a few years back and we were supplying the P.A. I had helped set up the big cabinets and had gotten back to work setting up my part of the back-line when I got a call from the soundman to check out the output from the 18" speakers on my side of the stage. Now the stage was only about five feet off the ground but what I didn't know was that someone had put cardboard boxes under those cabinets to keep them away from some poison ivy tendrils coming through that part of the stage (yes, we were out in the country! lol). I stepped in front of the cabinets onto what I thought was solid stage when "poof!" the boxes collapsed and I am headed straight down to the ground below with no warning. Fortunately, my martial arts training from years ago was still percolating around somewhere in my mind and I just tucked and rolled out of the fall. There were more than a dozen people at that stage who knew how badly my body had been savaged in a motorcycle accident a few years back. They were dumbfounded when I got up with little more than a scratch on me from where my shoulder had scraped against the stage on the way down. But, truth be told, and considering what might have happened, no one was happier with the end result than ME!!! lol <><Peace

One of my favorites is "Land of Confusion" originally by Genesis, and covered by Disturbed. It rocks! For years I thought that this was the original recording. lol Korn has done some interesting covers, too. Tool's version of Zep's "No Quarter" is no slouch either. It's interesting, sometimes I want to hear the Tool version, other times it's Zeps's version that moves me. <><Peace

Yay, my fretless is fully operational again. Now, I'm waiting for the fretless' strings I ordered to begin a new journey into musical magic. lol

An update: I emailed the folks at Warwick on Sunday explaining my situation and asking for some information on how to replace the tuner with a Warwick part. I got an email from them today apologizing for my inconvenience, and advising that a replacement tuner is on the way -- gratis, and giving me a tracking number. To say that I am impressed with Warwick's customer service is a HUGE understatement. I mean, it's only a tuner. They could have simply pointed me in the direction of a company selling replacement tuners like some of the folks on this site did -- thanks, by the way! :-) But the Warwick folks clearly wanted to put a smile on the face of someone who loves playing their basses. And they did! :-D <><Peace

Quite a story. Her contributions to the music of that era may be understated, almost anonymous, but it will never be forgotten.

Can you take it to a qualified Luthier and have everything checked out? If it's all original and well maintained, you should be good to go. A caveat, though, the tuner on my 2002 Warwick just died, so problems can happen to "younger" instruments as well. lol Good luck. Be happy.

When musicians have anything of substance stolen here, they immediately call the police. That way, ownership of any recovered gear can be established. The police then usually make the rounds of local pawn shops -- as should you. If you've got a local internet sales site over there like Craig's list, keep an eye out for your gear being offered for sale. A band I know had very expensive PA equipment stolen from them recently. They checked Craig's list and damned if the exact equipment was being offered for sale. After a call to the police to let them know what was going down, one of the guys became a "buyer" and met the "sellers" at a local fast food place to make the deal. Money changed hands, the equipment was loaded into the guy's van and BAM!!! four police cruisers descended in a flash on the "sellers." Arrested were a father, his twenty old son, and a friend of the son. The son and his friend made a brief statement to the police while pointing at the father: "he made us do it!" SMH

A quick question, though. While I'm waiting for a replacement tuner, do you think that I should loosten the remaining strings or simply leave well enough alone. Can the neck twist? I don't know how long it's going to take. It could be a day or two or a couple of weeks. What say you? <><Peace

Just remember . . . the less your fingers are doing while playing the song, the more time you have to do other interesting things, like checking out, and smiling at, all the pretties who are dancing to the music. It's what keeps me sane when playing country music, sometimes. lol

The entire shaft snapped off at the joint where it presumably joins with the tuner gear. It looks like the weld went bad on some cheap metal. I guess I'll contact Warwick and see how much a new tuner is going to set me back . :-( Wish me luck! Ciao

So, I'm getting ready for the morning worship service at our church. It's Easter Sunday! The place is packed and I'm ready to play!! So I'm double-checking the tuning on my 2002 Corvette Standard fretless when the unthinkable happens. I hear a loud pop! At first I thought that I had broken a string but, upon giving it a closer look, I realized that the shaft from the tuner on the G string had just snapped off! . . Oh . . . My . . . Gosh . . !!! (That's not an exact quote, by the way. lol) Fortunately, I always keep an old Squier (what a great neck) on a stand behind the amp for just these unforeseen events. So, has anyone ever lost a tuner in this way? I use this Warwick fretless bass all the time. This is certainly a first for me. I mean, what are the odds?? What possibly could I have done to have caused this? I'm wondering if I should contact the Warwick people. Did they have a bad run of tuners? Now I'm almost scared to tune the other three strings. lol Anyway, thanks for your kind attention. Any advice would be appreciated. Oh, by the way, Happy Easter! <><Marc

What everyone else has said is pretty good advice. Look, you'll make mistakes. We all do. Just don't look like it's the end of the world when the mistake comes. Just blow the mistake off. Look like you're having the time of your life playing and the people listening won't really be looking for, or noticing, your mistakes. If you look like you're having fun, the people listening tend to pick up on it and want to have fun as well. Have fun!

However, I am also a vocalist and all I want to hear from my monitor is vocals. That's why controlling my onstage sound is so important. Our soundman HATES me because i will not relinquish control of my onstage sound to him. lol If he had his way I'd be using a direct box into the FOH and relying solely on the wedges to hear my sound. So the person who used it to me was using it correctly when they were sayin that they'd get it done by "hook or by crook." They were simply saying that they'd get it done "by any means possible."

Here's one that I heard recently: "By hook or by crook." What in bloody blue blazes does that even mean???

I gotta tell you, I'm impressed with the knowledge here. I learned a long time ago to do what sounds the best in the biggest area possible. But it does take an effort to listen critically, sometimes. Now I play wireless. It really does help to hear the sound from many parts of the room when I'm using two 4x10 cabinets. Usuallly, though, I'm using a single 6x10 cabinet, so it's more a question of where to point the cab. YMMV
