Recording band rehearsals with a portable recorder
dave_bass5 replied to Wilco's topic in General Discussion
Ive been recording our gigs for years with a small Edirol R-09HR digital recorder. I strap it to the singers mic stand and it picks up a really nice stereo spread, plus with the vocal monitor being right by the mic stand the vocals come out nice and clear, and central. I use manual record level of course and ive never had a distorted recording and certainly no lack of bass in the mix. As has been said, with these things you more or less get the same out as going in, although it does help to place them centrally. When we started rehearsing earlier this year i also used the recorder for these and again, they come out nice and clear although with a bit more room ambience as i put it at the back of the room. -
I had the white version they do, i think its a few £ dearer. Very impressed with the quality.
-
Haha, yeah, this site isn't always good for us. My old job also allowed me to be on the internet most of the day without any restrictions. I think boredom also played a part.
-
When I was young I would use any rig the rehearsal studios had and never complained or felt lacking. listening back to the old recordings I find nothing to complain about. So why have I spent a fortune over the past 10 years and only just achieved a tone I'm mostly happy with?
-
Add me to the list of current rig is the best users. Although i wouldn't say my bass is the best (thats probably one of the Lakland Duck Dunn's ive had), the combination of P bass, MarkBass F1, VTBass Deluxe and Barefaced BB2 is way beyond any tone ive had in the past. Its a shame my gigs are getting sparse, as i have more enthusiasm for playing now than i have had for the past 5 years, and that was regular gigging.

Im torn with trading my Lakland 55 02 for a Jazz Bass.

There is a 5 string Sire V7 for sale on here. A very reasonable £285 (I have no connection with the seller). -

They have their own brand of preamp. 3 band, sweepable mids, active/passive mode, passive tone control in passive mode (so in passive mode you still have the normal Jazz controls of VVT) http://www.sire-guitars.com/usa/shop/bass/sire-marcus-miller-v7-bass-guitar-4st-ash-natural-color/ -

I think the thing about the Sire basses is they are good basses, and don't cost a lot. They aren't amazing at any price IMO, and they do have a signature tone that sounds different to my other jazz basses, but the build quality, the 18v preamp and the overal playability seems to be not what you would expect at this price point. For me the vintage frets put this in front of basses like the Squiers and others at the sub £500 price point. Personally I'd rather not have a pre amp in it, but as it's a good one I don't mind too much. When I had my 55-01 I changed the preamp for a NTMB but the preamp in the Sire is miles better. In fact for me it's better than the P-Retro I had in my P bass a while ago as well. -

I didn't get to compare my Laklands with my Sire, but I've had a few 5 string basses since my DJ5 (my last Lakland) and the Sire is the first one that I've found to have an even and usable (to me) B string, especially in the middle of the fretboard. Funny thing is although I've changed the strings a few times on my Sire, the B string is the original string. No idea why I haven't changed that yet though. -
Maybe the marketplace situation is a sign that we should all just go and play what we have and stop wanting something we dont really need ;-) Ive brought a few things, and sold a few on here, but i am very wary of getting ripped off, or having complications. I wouldn't buy anything expedience from anyone overseas without seeing some feed back from members i trust, and as mentioned at the start, properly posted ad's and not just a couple of lines of standard seller stuff which requiems the buyer doing all the work in getting the info. I would also not post a bass (although i have in the past and there were no issues). Ive read too many complaints where things haven't been as described etc, either by propel trying it on or damage in the post, so for me its face to face only. I supouse im lucky that i live in central London, and most of the things i sell are fairly low cost anyway. I do factor in that by not posting ill limit myself, but thats my choice for peace of mind, and im really only talking about basses here. What "erks" me is that my ad's are fairy comprehensive (IMO), yet i get time wasters asking about trades/posting to other countries etc, when i have already stated the opposite.By time wasting i mean that i have to reply to these people, even though ive taken the time already to state certain things in my ad. I really dont get people sometimes. What part of UK mainland is so hard to workout, or that i need the money not something i cant use as currency. Incredible really.

Maybe I'm a bit unusual but I find playing a 4 string a different experience to playing a 5 string. Of course we can play a 5 string like a 4 but it's not the same, to me. I stopped playing a 5 string because my band didn't need it, and going back to a 4 string was as good move. I can't see the point of having that 5th sting getting in the way and having a wider neck if it's not neccecery. I do feel this thread is just about GAS though, and not a NEED, and therefore there isnt really a right answer. -

Id go for a Sire V7, either 4 or 5 string. Better pre amp than the 55-01 (ive had one, lovely basses) but also a very good passive Jazz bass. You would also save a considerable amount of money, with the same end result. -
Zoom 60B multi effect pedal. It has one or two different flavours so a bit more versatile (for me). I laos have an old Boss Digital Dimension pedal (the lilac one) that i like for bass as it doesnt wobble as much. More a thicken tone.

Agree with the above. Since i tried my first set i dont want to go back to noraml sets. Playing does seem a bit more fluid (if you can call my playing that .

Sire V7 MM Bass. Controls designed by a blind 5 year old?
dave_bass5 replied to logicred's topic in Bass Guitars
I love where the active/passive switch is, as its protected from my plucking hand and i wont be switching modes by mistake. Not sure what the OP means about it being between two other switches, mine only has the one switch. -
I was looking in to these amps, very interested in your thoughts when it arrives. Good luck with it.

Best Power Amp for TECH 21 Sansamp RBI preamp?
dave_bass5 replied to BassManGraham's topic in Amps and Cabs
I almost got one of these a few weks ago. It was going to replace my Markbass F1 and to be used with my VTBass Di. only reason i didnt was that i relasied i had enough power already. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-NU1000-Inuke-1000W-Amplifier/dp/B005EHIN12 The brand does not put me off at all ;-) -
Maybe they don't ship from Tascam with a UK mains plug. Maybe it's up to the retailer to throw in the adaptor like Thomanns do. Do we know that the item does come with a different adaptor from other shops? Has anyone actualy spoken to Tascam or is it just a case of DV247 being gully without trial? If it's a universal PSU then it will work over here without any problems wouldn't it?

Marcus Miller Sire Bass - control description
dave_bass5 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Bass Guitars
Yeah, that knob can bring down walls. Ive lowered the overall output of the pre amp to allow the switch between passive and slightly boosted active. Before that i felt the overall level was booted a bit too much to go between the two modes. -

Surprised you couldn't find anything on the Sire webiste. Im confused about the mid range figures posted above. On the SIre website it states the mid freq is between 200hz and 1Khz. Not sure which is correct. -
Over a months wait for a shaver adaptor, my god why not just send it back and shop elsewhere if you aren't going to spend less than £2 to get you up and running?
Anyone know if Sire are going to do a Fretless? A Fretless is on my GAS list now...
Have you looked on their website ;-) -

dave_bass5 replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
I don't have any regrets, although I hardly ever use mine as I prefer 4 string, and P basses at the moment. I don't really fancy one of their 4 strings at the moment though as I'm covered for that and the spec is a bit different to what I'd prefer. Not a great lover of active basses, so I tend to run my V7 in passive mode most of the time, but it's the best active bass I've owned and nice to have all that control onboard. If there is one thing I'm not 100% on is the weight. It's not a big deal, but it's the heaviest bass I've owned and although wearing it isn't an issue carrying across London is a bit of a chore compared to my other basses. What I love about this bass is its so cheap there is no pressure to sell it on if I'm not using it. It's also the first non Lakland bass I've owned in the past 12 years that I haven't felt any need to upgrade a single thing. So yeah, it's a keeper, and when I get the urge to play a 5 string I have this rather than have to buy a new bass and then sell it on again. Can't wait for the 5 string P bass that's supposed to be coming out at some point. Maybe that will get me back to 5 string again. EDIT: I'm not sure I get the comment about the tuners and the bridge needing upgrading. It's certainly not a general consensus as far as I can see, and Ive not read many complaints. Some people like to tinker with things, but I've not had any intonation/set up issues and have never gone out of tune. What other reasons would there be other than just changing things for the sake of it?
