just dug up this old thread as i think i have been overdoing it since getting another double bass about 8 weeks ago, i have recently started bowing for the first time and i find that i dig in more with the left hand when im not bowing! or it seems to me like i do? i think the strain is partly due to an increase in practice time and the scoop on the fingerboard under the little finger in half position, i am playing some original music with a guy and a couple of his tunes have me playing lots of C and G notes with my little finger, the C causes more strain as the relief under the A string is more than the E string, i did have the relief made eaisier but i think that there is probably to much under the A and D strings(especially the A) ,looking down the board over the nut it has a look of those 2 strings being higher than the E and G much like you expect in a bridge set up for bowing, my little finger is getting very fatigued in half position, the musclebelow the little finger on the outside of hand is strained.

lovely looking bass !

thats great mate, aye you want to check out the vids by Geoff and get the left/right hands doin it reyt, go slow and keep it disciplined, theres nowt worse than having to correct bad technique later, im having to slow down on a few things to get my fingertips on the string evenly as i started to get slopy and it caused a problem when i tried to play a bit faster
-
Your Mittels on your bass are as easy to play as the weichs are on mine , yours may actually feel a bit easier, i think its probably in the fingerboard scoop, mittels on mine are a pig, i would need a much flatter board for them to work
-
its rather impractical to play double bass at those sort of levels and expect it to sound like a double bass, how do your band members feel about it?
-
thats great mate, keep going

lol, its always better to be in a position of having to cut than boost! Headway came and i think the top end is a little more realistic than the pro platt though its close, pro platt is easier to adjust as theres less things to mess with but i think the headway has the edge and its 2 channel and can ad a mike signal
-
Thanks Peter, i did a gig and the sound guy said he couldnt get enough bottom end from the Full Circle and it sounded to much midrange, all this has been sorted just by fitting it to the e foot which is where it is designed to be lol
-
Found a problem that has been resolved with the Full Circle, it was on the g foot and it should have been on the e foot, all the problems are were having have gone and it sounds great, well at least i have a back up pickup i know works now for very little money, cant wait to see what it sounds like with the headway edb2

Got my Westbury upright set up when i bought it with full circle as my last bass had one on and it was great, im not sure that it suits this one as much so got Shadow sh950 of ebay for £38 !!!, have just fitted it and it seems to be smoother and warmer, i think a bit of tweaking on the fit in wing slots will improve it slightly as i think my G side slot may be a little tight, it does seem to be more balanced with both sides in slots as i know some only have one in, im going through a fishman pro platt but have a Headway edb2 coming that i got of ebay used so will be interesting comparing the two .

have to agree Peter, its important to not get too frustrated and accept where you and work on a plan to get where you want to go, consistency is very important as i know lol, above all playing something you can enjoy where you are at the moment and working on basic skills till they are internalised, as ive got back into double bass recently am having great fun playing in a country/bluegrass band but working on the basics and developing skills

fishman pro platt into effects return markbass
Jezyorkshire replied to Jezyorkshire's topic in EUB and Double Bass
aye have done the turning bit and it does make a little difference, but i think its hard to tell what my bass eq with fishman sounds like as i have only played it through markbass combo and i think that colours it a bit -
aye front input works best with pre amp as buffer, havent tried the 3pin, though thats usually for a mic?
-
yes keep amp eq flat and do it all from outboard pre, dont do what i did with my markbass amp and go into the effects return, use the front input, you will get phase problems if you are loud hence the need for a phase switch and a high pass filter is essential
-
you also need a phase switch as open g upwards sounds like a phase issue, lower you need highpass filter, both these are on the fishman pro platt bass pre, thet come up used for sale

fishman pro platt into effects return markbass

Thanks Geoff, how do you fing you need to eq the full circle when using pro platt? or other? its seems on my bass to be very midrangy? -
fishman pro platt into effects return markbass
Jezyorkshire replied to Jezyorkshire's topic in EUB and Double Bass
im using fishman full circle pickup, sound guy was saying he was having to cut a lot of mids, ive found that to get somewhere near usable sound with platt pro eq am cutting roughly 25% low mid, 50% mid and 25% high mid, cheers Jez -
fishman pro platt into effects return markbass
Jezyorkshire replied to Jezyorkshire's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thanks for replies guys, im not entirely convinced that the pro platt doesnt colour the sound, it seems a little "electric", i have used one before when i had my golden strad, my mates got a l r baggs para di thingy that i will try sometime and compare, thanks, Jez -
Did my first gig after 2 year lay off last thursday, used pro platt into effects return of my markbass combo, had the amp runnin almost flat out, levels on fishman were high, sound was adequate but not good, have had a mess today and found that runnin into front input on amp with same settins on fishman gets a lot more volume and it possibly sounds better, will have to check that on next playing opportunity, ideally would like something like a PJB superflightcase but my markbass will have to do for now.
