  1. Tom, your right about the physical thing, im obviously weak in the shoulder area from my previous frozen shoulder, i developed this after i stopped playing double bass ! It also means im using the wrong muscles when lifting arm up to a degree, while bass is with Peter Hall for seam gluing and will get him to make it easier to play in half/first position will be trying to get my shoulder sorted with exercises and take it slow when get it back, i have been going manic with practice, one day i did 3 hours which is crazy. Hector, let us know how it goes and how your full circle sounds.
  2. just done the exercises for my left shoulder that i was given when i had the frozen shoulder problem couple of years ago, bleedin hell, its definitely in a state, the sensation im getting in my wrist may be referred pain/aching from this problem , this is obviously having an impact on getting my elbow up and the shoulder muscles/shoulder rotation working properly.
  3. Thanks Timbass, technique is a work in progress, been rushing on some things, i think some of my issues are due to a frozen shoulder i had a few years ago, im having a rest for a week after this week while my bass is at luthiers, im gonna get it to play a bit easier in half/first position so an adjustment on fingerboard relief and do some exercises i was given when i had physio.
  4. i have just remembered that about 2-3 years ago i suffered from a frozen shoulder, im wonderin if some of the symptoms im experiencing are due to the raised arm position when playing double in relation to this previous problem, i went for physio and was able to sort it, i still have the exercise sheets somewhere and a stretchy piece of material that i used for the exercises, ive also sent for this [b] Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Other Repetitive Strain Injuries by Sharon J. 8. http://www.bapam.org.uk/documents/1_Dont_cramp_your_style_web.pdf have downloaded this, looks helpful
  9. Fatgoogle, i thought that it is better to have it slopin rather than too vertical to make use of left hand arm weight to assist in finger pressure? Thanks Rev, i was surprised how good it sounded from in front of bass on recording, Jake,i know what you mean with the loose cos i keep noticing im tensing my feet badly!
  10. Thanks Rabbie, i know i have been rushing to get back to where i was 2 years ago when i last played, need to slow down lol
  11. Have just checked playing position, Geoff, just had a look at your vid regarding standing and i am too side on and fatgoogle have tried endpin out another inch and that is better, will try to address these as im practicing, thanks, Jez
  12. Thanks fatgoole, do you mean raise the height of the bass? (more endpin out) it does feel good at this height but it may be better a little higher. i have issues with alternating my right hand fingers as i much prefer the sound of my first finger, but i agree, i do use ghost notes but i think i do them with my first finger and deadening the string with my left hand, i usually find it difficult not to use them lol so find it surprising that there arent any in vid! i was probably trying to be disciplined as i knew it was gonna go on youtube !
  13. wow, thanks Geoff, wasnt expecting that, i agree with the arm weight thing, and a bit more to the front would prob be good, where abouts in leeds are you Geoff? i was thinking of having you check my technique to be on the safe side and have now got a bow so could do with some advice there, thanks, Jez
  14. have posted a video in new topic, if you guys want to check my technique, i can see a lack of support sometimes for little finger maybe?
  15. Got a new toy, Zoom HQ2hd so thought i wud try it out, and as have recently posted in old thread about pain issues any advice on my technique is welcome, thanks, Jez http://youtu.be/pCXm3cCdn5M
  16. thanks fatgoogle, thats great, had a bluegrass rehearsal tonight and i dont have any pain when playing just a little sore after, i think my age is beginning to tel as well lol
  17. aye i have to agree, i do think my last bass had a flatter board and my new bass may need a little adjustment as well, i have checked my third finger support when using little finger and it wasnt consistent, though generally my left hand is quite disciplined as far as i can tell, Geoff is nearest to me and could do with some bowing advice also, thanks for advice guys
  18. Hi Hector, no have not had lessons, its 2 years ago that i stopped playing double bass, i played for 3 years before and never had this problem, i think its caused by increasing playing too quickly and too much fingerboard scoop under the a string in particular around C when playing that note with little finger, i may not be supporting it enough with third?
  19. thanks mate ,will have to check on that and see what i am doing, i suspect it may be a bit hit and miss at the moment, i wasnt fully aware that it was the correct thing to do but makes sense!
  20. HI Fatgoogle, do you mean that the third should be also pressing on the string same time as little finger? but behind the little finger, not on top?

  22. just dug up this old thread as i think i have been overdoing it since getting another double bass about 8 weeks ago, i have recently started bowing for the first time and i find that i dig in more with the left hand when im not bowing! or it seems to me like i do? i think the strain is partly due to an increase in practice time and the scoop on the fingerboard under the little finger in half position, i am playing some original music with a guy and a couple of his tunes have me playing lots of C and G notes with my little finger, the C causes more strain as the relief under the A string is more than the E string, i did have the relief made eaisier but i think that there is probably to much under the A and D strings(especially the A) ,looking down the board over the nut it has a look of those 2 strings being higher than the E and G much like you expect in a bridge set up for bowing, my little finger is getting very fatigued in half position, the musclebelow the little finger on the outside of hand is strained.
  23. lovely looking bass !
  24. thats great mate, aye you want to check out the vids by Geoff and get the left/right hands doin it reyt, go slow and keep it disciplined, theres nowt worse than having to correct bad technique later, im having to slow down on a few things to get my fingertips on the string evenly as i started to get slopy and it caused a problem when i tried to play a bit faster
  25. Your Mittels on your bass are as easy to play as the weichs are on mine , yours may actually feel a bit easier, i think its probably in the fingerboard scoop, mittels on mine are a pig, i would need a much flatter board for them to work
