1. Certainly don't hate them but have never been able to get a sound I like from them. Bad experience at a Festival when you have very little set up time so wrestled with it for two minutes then put it flat and plugged a Pod into it.
2. I've been playing with bands for 25 years and have never went in for this before/after type of thought. It's all about feel for me and experience. If you practice/gig long enough with drummers you learn their strengths and faults, when it truly comes together there is a sonic connection and you unmistakably know you're on it. The whole band buzzes and it just works. If that feeling isn't there, analyse and try harder. That's just my opinion BTW!
3. All posts very much appreciated guys I really value your opinions, leaves me with the original problem though I suppose. I'll have to sell what I'm selling and troop around the country with a bag of cash until a rig sings. May have to save longer and get the big boy Aguilar and cabs. Just tell the mrs I made them in the shed. Good luck with the Carvin sale Karl hope it's a swift successful sale! I'll be selling soon and the current buyers market doesn't fill me with confidence for the gear I'll shift.
4. What was the problem with the Barefaced live? It's portability and more clear power I'm after. Bassman 135 ok but just not loud enough for bigger halls, been hefting Ampeg SVT 115 & 410 cabs to compensate and a DI into PA. Band has a 14 seat Transit but it's the late night lifting I hate.
5. McCormicks and Sound Control have both closed, Victor Morris is selling crossbows to lunatics, we have a lovely friendly shop called Strung Out Guitars that have some nice private sales passing through, they have a few vintage basses at the moment and service my Bassmans for me. Other than that it's GuitarGuitar. They don't even hold the larger TC amps/combos any more. It's a shame for Scotland's biggest city but there you are. I'll probably end up with Thomann and for a TH500 and a couple of Barefaced cabs as almost all chat is positive.
6. Glasgow is now rubbish too, officially! When get the cash together and tranquillise the wife for long enough I'll make a day of it and head to London to try out Aguilar etc
7. I'm in exactly the same position Karl! I've mentioned before I just cannot try out what I want to anymore from retailers without travelling miles, even out of Scotland completely! Such a pain as may have to take a 1500-2000 pound plunge for TH500 and 2x210 cabs without even properly trying them. Sign of the times perhaps as high street stores struggle to keep the business going. This is probably the reason I'm reading you guys post on here.
8.
Liking my current cabs VERY much, surprisingly more than the B/F S12V I used for 18 months. Shame the Carvin overhangs a bit
I have a real thing for old Bassmans as all modern amps I try seem somehow artificial for the tone I like, but I really like this vertical set up. My gig last night sounded a bit muddy on the hollow boomy stage. Great rig and bass!!
9. That Super Bassman looks great!
10. Not the biggest and perhaps not the best but it still sounds sweet.

12. Wow Rick that is my idea of bass heaven right there. Leaves me with one thought "Must try harder" Fantastic mate.
13. I would leave if I were you. You have my sympathies with the difficult family situation you have endured. My band has always been a source of fun, support and distraction as we all have suffered bereavements and difficulties through our time together so perhaps I have been lucky. They are also very understanding with my crazy shift patterns and haven't brought in a Dep yet. Anyway, as this is a bass forum, can it be a band without bass??? Cut and run my man and I'm sure fortune will favour you. I really hope that personal problems are now behind you and you find some joy in new endeavours!! L
14. Again plenty of sound thoughts there. I think I'm just going to get a TH500 with 2xBarefaced Retro Two10's
15. It's the online buyers world I suppose, gone are the days of plug in, play and buy! Thanks for your comments, trouble is most players I admire have huge, expensive well maintained vintage rigs with the hairy fellas in black t shirts to lift them around! My Fender Showman, Bassmans/Ampeg and Ashdown have all taken there toll on car springs and my back. I just can't be bothered moving them at 2am any more. May have to buy blind(deaf)...you get the point.
16. Advice required, again. I have hunted high and low in my area and the Retailers are no use. I understand in tough financial times shops can't buy in what they can't sell but the places in Glasgow don't have deals with the manufacturers I want to try out so how can make an informed decision? Id like to test Mark Bass, Phil Jones, Tonehammer(head) and Tecamp around the 500 watt size. Looks like I'll have to travel so any ideas informative player dudes?
17. Our wedding band rehearse all new songs to a very high degree, over and over until exact. We don't wing anything and although this is time consuming, repetitive and at times frustrating it can give an edge over other covers groups at wedding shows etc. It's a decision for each band to make individually but in my experience it rules out a "noodling ego" guitarist or incorrect and obvious structures. There are hundreds of samey sounding covers acts that only nearly get things right, we have all endured a few of them on occasion. Don't get me wrong once new tunes are nailed we rely on personal practice and our actual gigs to maintain a standard only putting the long practices in for new material. Each to their own but this has made us very busy and well paid. I hope you fine the right balance!
18. Hi Nomad, I live just outside Glasgow and have never used Forums etc before but again picked this one due to good attitudes, knowledge and advice. I've played bass for 20 years but I haven't really got a great tech knowledge so the guys on here are a great help. I may also try buying/selling on here too. Cheers mate!
19. Thanks for the advice guys, I'm going to have all my stuff serviced and decide what to keep. Probably keep the black face Bassman head and Ampeg cab, shift on the full silver grill Fender head/cab, Ashdown and possibly my 1998(roughly) USA Fender Jazz 70's reissue (Blonde/black scratch and black block inlays) no point being sentimental I remember being a young pup aching to acquire them so it's a shame to have them just lying around when they could be gigging and used. Plenty to think about but I'm impressed by the Barefaced cabs and company in general. Thanks again!!!
20. Thanks for the Barefaced tip they look very interesting indeed! Cheers
21. Thanks for the thoughts guys, yeah the Fender heads and Showman look and sound great. Basically I need to get with the times and modernise a bit. Will definitely sell the Ashdown and one Bassman, possibly a Jazz and make up any difference for the new stuff. The problem in my area is that no retailers stock the equipment to try out! Has anyone even heard a Tecamp Puma 212??
22. Hi all I'm a newbie and have basically joined here to seek your collective knowledge. I've been playing for years and just do hobby stuff now weddings/pubs and home jamming. I've got 2 old Fender Jazz basses and a Jack Cassidy Epiphone(which has been surprisingly good) Anyway, I have an Ashdown ABM 500 410 Combo, two old 60's/70's Fender Bassman 135 heads, an Ampeg SVT Classic 15" cab and my original, ancient Fender Showman cabinet. My problem is I'm sick of shifting the bulk and weight around and can't decide which modern small rig to buy? Been thinking of selling some of my gear and replacing with a Tecamp Puma Combo or Tonehammer with 1-2 Aguilar cabs but can't decide because I can't seem to try them out anywhere! I'm based in the Glasgow area and prefer just a good old warm tone. Any thoughts Bass Brothers?
23. I'm toying with the idea of a Tecamp 500w Puma Combo 212. Has anyone got an opinion on this versus the cheaper GK models of similar spec? At the moment I carry around all vintage gear and it may be time to embrace the new lightweight equipment as 2am is not much fun on the way out of venues!
