1.
I have a "cheaper" basswood MIJ P, apparently. From what I have been able to find out, there is nothing wrong with basswood, providing you don't want a natural finish and don't intend to use it in a fight. Tone is warm, sustain is good and it is relatively light in weight. Fit and finish on the bass is excellent, hardware looks to be of decent quality, frets are substantial. Nobody ever says anything nice about my playing, but lots of people have said nice things about the sound of my bass. Objectively, it is way, way better than my daughter's ex-boyfriend's Squier P and quite bit better than my MIM Jazz. I have no idea how in compares with anything MIA, but you would have to offer me something very special to get it off me in a trade.
Agreed - absolutely nothing wrong with basswood - it's not ALWAYS light though! I've got a CIJ basswood jazz which is just lovely to play and listen to. Ironically , the (sunburst) body is quite plain, but the neck is one of the most beautiful I've seen!
2. I bought a lovely old P a while ago from Beedster. Trouble is the bridge wasn't original and i wanted a bridge cover. I've bought a reissue vintage bridge and bridge cover ,but of course - they're all shiny. Anyone got any tricks to make them look more 'used' and tarnished. OK - I know the bridge will be under the cover and no one'll be able to see it - that's just me!
3. There's a thread on here about Norman Watt - Roys setup - using a (Ithink) mark 6 - it's all mids boosted - totally un smiley face. He sounds farking awesome live.
4.
I don't think a new nut will make a huge difference to be honest if the old one is fine, just wait til it wears out. Also that looks pretty nice, i've always liked 3TS jazzes without pickguards, very jaco-ish. I'm GASing for a jazz right now too... grr
+1 on the nut - remember a new nut will only contribute to the tone when you play open strings.
5. WellI'm def not buying it now as I've just bought a spanking new mapleglo 4003!
6.
I'm still a complete bowing amateur but have a french bow, simply because that's what the shop had! I am learning French grip but have fiddled with German - to be honest, I don't know what I'm doing well enough to have a preference yet
Snap - but I went German!
7. Thanks guys - I think I'll give this one a miss!
8. I've come across a black (jetglo?) 4001 in a music shop - allegedly 1977. Buckle rash on the back ,and hints of blue underneath the black in a couple of places. It's priced at £1359. Is this a good price - is it likely to have been refinished with the blue coming through? Also - any obvious stuff to help me verify the year - what should I look out for - I know very little about Riks! BTW - it sounds and plays fantastic. Cheers Col
9.
Pictures added Dabootsy - apologies for the delay. Been busy at a country fair, on a greyhound awareness stand. Rock and roll, eh?! Thanks for the good words regarding the P-Bass, King Tut. If only we'd agreed on a deal for your Thumb, I'd be content by now. There again, it was a 5 string, and I'm bad enough on a 4. Benwhiteuk - pm'd, ta. BanksKS - it's a '94 that I took in a p/ex for my Thunderbird (radical swap or what?!), with three band EQ, and a stacked blend/volume pot. Hence I've no idea on a value - make me an offer, and I'll give it due consideration. Thanks for the .de site tip, too. Anyone interested in the Warwick Corvette $$? Thanks again for the interest, folks. Regards, Phil
You're tempting me Phil..........!
10.
What do you mean by 'bass interests'? I play bass and I like playing bass, doesn't get much more interesting than that I'm based in Norwich, though I'm willing to post if need be.
Sorry Matt - I was being a bit tetchy. People join the site just to sell something - which is allowed! Maybe a bit of an introduction to yourself would be cool so we know who we're dealing with. Might help you sell your bass also. Or maybe you've already posted in introductions. Anyway never mind me - I'm a bit of a grump sometimes - just ask my kids - good luck with the sale!
11. It used to be mine. It's an awesome bass that I wish I'd never sold. Before i had the MM put in it was awesome as a P. I can't believe the P pickup is a standard mexico job - it's very powerful. I'm tempted to have it back off of Mr Noakes - but I've got too many basses! It's got a bit of wear and tear but nothing that affects the sound/playability.
12. And your bass interests are......... sorry - I get tetchy about this stuff. Nice bass mate - where are you based?

14. Ooooh sorry - it's a P S1, not a J S1. I'm sure they're just as nice - but not tried one, makes me think of my Thunder 1A which has a series parallel switch - thins the sound out for a jazzier feel - works well on the Westone - not tried a Precision though.
15. These are great basses- I bought Flankers - a Jazz and P in one!
16. I use a DB500 (12" 160W). It's loud enough for most pubs and had a really nice tube tone. It seems very sensitive to poorly grounded basses though, and some of my basses buzz through when not touching the strings, although the same basses don't buzz through other amplification. Strange that!
17. And as for the Vasectomy - it only hurts when he (she??!!) tugs your tubes out to get a better grip! You'll only be out of the game for a week max - but take some pix - there's no other way to reproduce the lovely shade of purple in ur balls!!
18. I can't help moving about and having a general groove. The rest of the band(s) hate it and a accuse me of 'dad dancing'! Ho Hum!
19.
Rumour has it that Warwick changed from the recessed Dunlop-compatible design to the exposed Schaller type due to instances of natural (ie requiring wax) finished basses shrinking due to moisture loss caused by infrequent (or non-existent) waxing. The shrinkage caused cracks around the metal inserts, as these (obviously) don't shrink! Another interpretation would be that Schaller straplocks are more widespread, and that compatible buttons are a lot cheaper to fit than the recessed ones...
AFAIK the exposed Warwick straplocks are Dunlop compatible, not Schaller. Certainly those on my (recently sold) $$ were as are those on my thumb. I find Dunlop strap attachments will fit the Warwick lock, but Warwick strap attachments wont fit dunlop locks. The upstart of this is - if you have lots of basses, you can buy a set of dunlop straplocks for the strap attachments, then buy warwick straplocks for all your basses from the Warwick website shop, where they're about a third the price of Dunlops!!
20. You lucky lucky lucky lucky thing!! You're more lucky than a four leaf clover in a lottery winning contest with a rigteous premonition of the winning numbers......oops - too much Malbec - I'll shut up now heh heh! Seriously mate - well scored! Col
