I get that a lot! Didn't lifeson have a black/yellow explorer?
EH? Aren't you thinking of Eddie VH? Are you cracey, Montana? ARE YOU CRACEY?!

I was at Si's covers gig last night and heard this bass. He was playing through an Ashdown and the tone was rich and warm with a bit of slightly hollow sprang and growl going on. Good and even response over all the strings and it sounded really nice, to my ears. A bit like a Stingray without the massive, dominant bottom end. I imagine it has a really good slap tone although thankfully you resisted temptation I got a good feel for the sound of this bass, because if you've seen Si play, he's all over the neck, I think I probably heard every string on every fret You are one hell of a bassist mate That a fair appraisal, Si?
It would look great in yellow/black. Lifesons gibbo springs to mind.
Are you completely mad? Yellow/black? Lifeson's Gibbo??!
I'm using an unlined Precision now but when I had a lined Jazz I noticed this same thing - Gary Willis refers to it on his website too. There have been a couple of threads on BC where I asked if anyone could explain why this was the case but no one seemed to have an answer and others denied that it was so.
I would suggest it's where your head is positioned and your perceived finger placement is the result of optical perspective. I couldn't care less what Gary Willis says but if he hasn't thought of this then I suspect he doesn't put shelves up level either.

I am certain that's the one Wayne (punkdude) loved in Leeds. I went there to try it and they'd sent it down to London the day before.
Found this superb contrapuntal bassline this week while I was looking for old 80's tunes to mash up: If you want to hear what it sounds like on a bass, this chap does a good take:
Hey! A fellow Go West fan! Cool
In a slightly different sense, Martin Carthy tells the story of his ...er... Martin 000-18MC "Martin Carthy Signature Model". He's always preferred a zero fret and asked Martin (the company) to put one on his Sig. "Oh no," say Martin, "We don't do zero frets. Mark of the amateur. Well-known fact". "Oh dear," replies Carthy, not to be denied. "Over in Europe everybody and his dog uses zero fret guitars. Leave the zero fret off and this guitar won't sell sell a single unit." "Ah. Right. Well, I suppose you know your market best," concede Martin and off they go to re-tool. Suckers.
That's right. Martin Carthy does know best.

"Core Tone" isn't very important in your bass.
Don't you think it's better to honor the age-old instruments and sounds that we've all come to love, instead of effortlessly emulating them? If this thread is anything to go by (from the few posts that I've read), in the near future every bassist will be using a black and white variax bass and some Line 6 amp... There's something about that which just isn't quite right in my mind. Is that just me being unable to adapt and face facts? I'm not all too sure, maybe in a few years I'll realise that digital is the best thing to happen to music, but for now I'll stick with my Geddy jazz and ampeg with a big smile on my face.
Then you are simply celebrating the equipment, not the players and their unique musicality. -
I'll be playing with both Doreen & Ingrid and Krupa on the same night at the Inn on the Green Ladbroke Grove on 26th Feb. This will be a great night of global fusion, Zulu Funk, Bollywood Pop, and other cracking stuff from legendary sitarist Sheema Mukherjee and Transglobal Underground's awesome front-man, TUUP. It's a rare party with Transglobal Underground members shakin their sh*t on a solo level (!'m so lucky to play with these people!). It WILL be funky, it WILL be sexy! You WILL want to shake ass! Trust me It's a tenner to get in and that includes lovely food cooked by people who know what they're doing. I've eaten it before and it's gorgeous I would really love to see you there, and please say hello if you make it. Cheers, Nigel
How come?
Because he focuses on what is necessary and what is usable. He abhors unneeded traditionalism and does what is practical with exceptional quality and attention to detail. He abhors glued in necks and vehemently denies they have any use whatsoever which really floats my monkey. That said, there is no way in hell I would be happy with your bass which I played at the SE BB. It required too delicate a touch. But I dare say I could higher the action a bit
I have to agree! had a couple of 5-stings made to fit (I have small hands and am pretty small physically), and my 70's Precision hasn't seen the light of day since. Got rid of the Ampeg for a Trace Elliot stack, but was disappointed when I "Upgraded" the head. The new American owned version seems to have lost all the tonal character the British produced models had, so all change again to Ashdown - Brilliant piece of kit, though I have been looking at the recent TC Electronics combos
Fancy selling me the '70s P? I LOVE the inherent sound of those things. -
It's an incredibly sensible idea which for some reason has been tarred with the notion that it's a cheapskate corner cut. All basses & guitars should have zero-frets. You know it makes sense. Jon.
See? Now we understand each other
