Not directly on the fret so that half the finger is overlapping past the fret - but directly applying pressure immediately behind the fret. So the leading edge of the finger will line up with the front edge of the fret.
We appear to be Siamese twins tonight mate
Just done a quick Youtube of the song. The chorus is played with a pick and consists of an 8th note followed by two 16ths an octave up, a la dum diddy dum diddy etc If you've only just started playing again, then I think you will probably struggle to play it the conventional two finger style. I would think a pick would be easier (and more authentic). Definitely do not attempt all down strokes - you'll do yourself a mischief Another way, you could try playing the lower (8th note) with the thumb, and play the higher octave (two 16th notes) with the fingers.
That makes it more difficult. Best with strict alternate picking as the motion is more natural.
Ahh it seems from yours and ET's replies that I have been playing with a misunderstanding all these years no wonder my finger tips are hard as nails. I will apply a lighter touch and see if that works. BTW does that mean when you fret a string your finger is directly on top of the fret? I always thought it was placed between the frets
Just before the fret, as close as you can without being on top of it.
For Xmas and to my great surprise my young son and daughter bought me a bass guitar ( my daughter probably got sick and tired of me nicking her six string school acoustic to pick out old punk numbers . It was cheap obviously as I wouldn't have wanted them to spend any money on the old man but the guitar they picked seemed nice enough. An acoustic/electric Lindo bass. Thing is I am getting a lot of unwanted sound from the strings as I pull my fingers off the fret. It seems to me that the height of the frets are quite high which means I have to press hard to make the string come into contact with the fret board and when I move my fingers from a note played it seems to make unwanted additional noises. Thus far I haven't plugged into an amp and used the active pick ups will this help iron out the sound? Also is this a problem with Lindos? I have heard a few people say the frets seem a mm or two too high.
Hello mate. The height of the frets is no issue, some instruments, especially from the middle ages had scalloped fingerboards, trust me, it's not a problem. The height of the strings above the frets is important, ie. the 'action'. Acoustic hollowbody instruments are more prone to accentuating string and finger noise, it's common, some people like it, I don't mind it for certain things, it adds character. Just a point, when you fret a string, you only need to press hard enough to get the string to make the note ring clear on the fret, there is no need at all for the string to touch the fingerboard, in fact you should avoid that at all costs. It usually only requires a fairly light touch to fret the string. Hope that helps. Photos would be useful and measurements, I'm sure we can give you an online diagnosis Cheers.

I can do pretty fast string skips with the pick, but you have to practice it very slowly and gradually build up speed over a matter of weeks or months depending on how good you are with a pick already. Concentrate on keeping very accurate time, very important if you want to get your string skipping fast and accurate, I'd start at one note per second and slowly increase speed from there. You will need to cross pick - downstroke on the low string, upstroke on the high string. When you've got that pretty good, try double picking each note, this will really increase your coordination with up and dowstrokes moving to different strings. Most of the movement is from the wrist so try to keep you wrist nice and smooth, fluid motion, no tense jerky movements from the wrist thank you! You should hear Scott Thunes do it, fantastic speed and accuracy. Anyway, nice choice of song, welcome on board the boat, good luck with the bass line
I had a MIJ P which Nig bought off me. It was a very cool bass, but the current prices are too high for me...(they seem to be £700 ish now and some stores will do an American Standard for £150 more with a hardcase etc). Id also have to get USA pups, as I can hear a huge difference with them. Thanks anyway! If you could buy them new for £500-£600 Id have one!
It's the Premium non-export CIJs you want, they have USA pups. Mine has USA Vintage pups. Have a chat with John Blackman at Far East Guitars mate. Have a good chat with him. Bog standard MIJs are not worth as much. Mine was £645 and is a limited run Premium 62 RI, these cost more, but it's virtually mint. They do these limited runs with special paint jobs, odd specs, etc. The Badass on mine is stock for instance. Seriously, have a chat with John and let him know what you're after, any concerns you have about QC, spec., etc. he will explain stuff to you and keep a look out for you. But you may need to be patient if you want a particular spec or colour. John seriously knows his stuff.

I'm pretty sure they didn't put it on them and they were only made in the US then anyway, I'm fairly sure of that. Loads of Fender headstocks don't have Made in USA on them.
Yay! I have a J-Retro in my fretless. A veritable tone monster it is... watch the output, I've already destroyed two 15s with it! Back to the pearl - I have a pearl on my Precision... it's a bit weddings, christenings and bar mitzvahs... it's what you play after all...
Haha! I have a U-Retro in my Electra, awesome beast. I don't use any amplification so it's only the FoH at risk You know I think I might just go for the pearl white guard too! -
The random quality is just utter sh**....it really annoys me. The current retail prices are sky high...they need to really think about what they do in QC.
I know man, it's pathetic. But when you get a goodun (naturally that will be from Japan ) they do feel so f***ing right! -
Yes, I do this on all my Foderas.
Knew you'd come round eventually Si
Yes Cheers! It's hard to understand but I always did want a Fender, I was just put off by the random quality of them, and some a just plain rubbish, I've only played one USA one that had me thinking about it the next day, and that was a new USA Standard out of four I tried. But this, this is wonderful! It's like coming home. Although I am having to do lots of work on the POD to get it to sit in the mix right. No mad guitars to battle with but lots of keyboard, strings and vocal. I do one thing and it cancels out another, or I get a good audible eq but don't dig on the actual sound. These PODs can be wonderful but they are also a great way of disappearing up one's own arse. -
Yes... enjoy. I seem to have a symbiotic relationship with my Jazz... it took us both a long time to get there. Now get that pearl on!
I must admit I am slightly tempted by to fit a pearl white PG, but I really think it might look a bit like a friendly lady's bedroom, or be tempted to play country & western music.. -
Hiya, I don't really know why 99% of bands consist of B/G/Dr/Voc, there are so many cool instruments around. I recently formed a trio with electric fiddle and electric cello. I really would love to have a xylophone in my rock band. So my question is, what is your "dream linup" in instruments, and why?
I just started playing a bit of Microkorg, glockenspiel and percussion in Kit's band. Great fun. We have two exceptional violinists, drums, textural guitar, piano, and bass. It's a great lineup as is. I love horns and I'd love to play in a line up with a big, beautifully orchestrated horn section and lots of percussion. Harp is lovely too, but sounds too polite most of the time. Mbira is a funky instrument.
