I should have made that a stronger point. With the last guitarist, I did what I felt was right. The new chap gives me a 'WTF' look if I deviate from either the actual line or a root 5th groove. It has knocked my confidence of playing in the band situation.
He may be confused, not used to more complex bass harmony. HE may be suffering a lack of confidence.
Just to clarify, I get on with my drummer very well After our rehearsal last night, we had a chat about how the band is going etc. We both agree that the new guitarist is very talented but we are not progressing as well as at the start. He made comments about my playing, like it has become more root based 'in the pocket' stuff. We used to be a lot more 'free form' - both knowing what the other will do and playing to it. It made me realise that I have lost my way a little. Although we are a covers band, I usually made my own bass lines (unless they are central to the tune). I seem to have lost that confidence and it is rather confusing. When practicing on my own, I let the music dictate. Now, when I rehearse with the band, I end up sticking with root / 5th and grooving to the beat. Any ideas or advice on how to break free from this durge? Cheers Brian
Join a good originals band and explore your inner psyche.

What a great way to showcase different basses.
Well yes it is, but it did make me think: If you didn't know what it was, and only heard it, would it really jump out at you that the bass kept changing? I don't think it would to me. Count (Cloth Eared) Bassy
They mostly sounded very different to me. I closed my eyes and only looked at the ones I enjoyed the sound of. -

Superb! I liked the Warwick Star Bass best. -
That'll teach you to play bass wearing them. You've been warned about your dress sense before. I suggest you take it on board !
Leave the pickups. See how the J-Retro works with your own first.

I also visited both Wunjo shops last week. The tall long haired guy in the bass shop was cool, and the guys in the guitar shop are also, really friendly and amenable. However, £450 for a S/H Hohner boat paddle, and passive at that? I also tried a 1974 Les Paul Custom that was beat to hell and way overpriced. but I suppose they are tourist prices. Overall though, I'm impressed. Good range in the bass shop, but no plans to stock Warwick, but they did have Spectors "the original, and best" the guy told me
Do I get photographers, choreographers, MCs and singers in 4" stiletto heels at my gigs. No, I do not, and if I did, the odd squashed cable would be a tiny price to pay. , sunshine. .
Point taken

It seems to happen to me quite a lot, usually during soundchecks, usually non-musos (photographers, choreographers, MCs, etc.) on the stage, but often singers. It doesn't half piss me off, I feel like they've just stood on one of my cats or summat. My obbm cables seem to withstand it thankfully. My POD X3 LIVE is now sporting a deep scar from a 4" stiletto heel too. I find it odd and very annoying that some people seem to be oblivious to the welfare of my gear. I'm sure I'm not alone.

The V profile originally came about when Fender let an inexperienced geezer profile some Strat necks in the '50s. They put them on anyway and got some good feedback. I have a 2011 USA Deluxe V-Neck Strat, best guitar neck I ever played.

I still can't decide if you've set a good or a bad example Do you feel good? Or do you get the post gig depression like a lot of us seem to?
Final day in the shed: Without wrestling too many whores, I had one run through of the set for tonight. Because of our god awful, and to be frank, non existent rehearsal yesterday, we're meeting today at 4.30pm to rehearse, soundcheck and what not. Let's just hope the keys and drums turn up for rehearsal today. I thought that too much time in the shed today would be somewhat counter productive. I'm only going to tire my left arm, not build it, so once through the set will have to do. It hurt and my left arm wanted to give up through my final practice session but I kept going through, with the knowledge that tonight WILL be a lot more painful. However, charts written, tunes learnt, I'm going to 'wrestle this whore' into the car and head for the rehearsal/gig. It's taken 3 years of my Double Bass sitting in the corner for me to get a gig on it, and one week to 'learn' how to play it. I just must keep it up and hopefully lots more gigs will come in on it and I'll now be able to advertise myself as a bass guitar/double bass player. Exciting. My next update will be tonight post gig. Maybe even tomorrow morning. EDIT: Oh and thanks once again for the words of encouragement. I'll try and get some audio recordings. There's a burlesque act too ... Would anyone care for video recordings of that? I jest!
Best of luck man, it's been a very interesting journey so far. Make sure you warm up and stretch out your hands wrists and upper limbs before playing tonight. Sounds like you're going to be ok. I salute your bravery and hard work.
Good post and good advice. The behringer ones are £35 well spent. Last resort is to get in touch with the organisers and see if you can contact the sound people. I don't know a sound man worth his salt that wouldn't have a spare DI box handy. Yeah your bass would be hitting the desk with no colour on it, but it's better than nothing.
It would almost certainly be a passive DI though, he'll really need an active DI.
It's a real shot in the dark... Can anyone help please? Woody
Wish I could help man. But I don't use backline. Why not pick up an active DI like a SansAmp, Hartke VXL, even a cheap Behringer, and go direct to desk. As long as you have a PA that can handle bass (which I imagine there will be given the event) you'll be fine, I do it all the time. You need not worry about tone, these little boxes kick serious arse. I remember playing Larmer Tree festival a few years ago, I bought a Hartke VXL Bass Attack DI in the morning, read the little manual on the way there, and set it up during soundcheck. The monitor mix soundguy said I had great tone. I've had a sansamp too, top stuff. I use a POD X3 Live direct to the desk now, never owned a bass amp. As long as you have some bass in your monitors you'll be perfectly fine. I'm sure there's a BCer who could lend you one of these. I reckon every bassist should have one in their bag anyway, just in case their amp goes down. Best of luck
+1, good luck. My limited knowledge of the DB is that it's a bit of a whore for the first couple of years. Once you've wrestled it into submission it starts to get a bit easier
You wrestle whores into submission?!?
Just an inquiry here, I've spent my last few months pretty much focusing on learning prog ( rush in particular ) so after nailing yyz, spirit of the radio, strangiato, etc, i've found myself pretty rooted to that style and unable to break out really eager to learn some funk/soul to boost my repertoire, I don't think i've actually found a song I enjoyed learning in a good few months, last one was rhythm stick by the blockheads I believe, Just wondering if anyone can reccomend any artists or songs which take a fair amount of technicality and have a pretty tight groove ( nothing crazy like teen town ) Cheers!
Nothing kills groove quicker than technicality. And if you can't feel the groove, you ain't grooving. Reggae bass lines are so simple, and dead easy to play, but there's an invisible line between giving someone the uncontrollable urge to dance, and pissing them right off. Groove is the same. It's a kind of magic. Work on getting ONE note to groove, use space and accent to make that one note groove. Set up the simplest, mid tempo, Boom Tish Boom Tish drum pattern, see if you can make that one note groove. When you can, and you're getting excited by it, do something with that one note that stops it grooving. Switch between the two and try to work out what it is that causes that those feelings. Then add little things to your grooves, build it slowly. Feel it. Forget all that technical sh*t for now, it will teach you everything about technique and nothing about playing bass. If you want to groove, leave your ego in the bedroom.

Both of those were really interesting and useful. Especially enjoyed the JA one.
