1.
I've never understood the "No Music" unwritten rule that is around popular music. It seems to me it is the only form that thinks you should remember a full set. I play Tuba in brass bands they would never do a gig without music, so why is it as a rock bass player I'm expected to do this ? ???? BIGd
Yeah I can imagine seeing Van Halen with sheet music and stands onstage
  2.
Voted, it was hard to choose but I went for the track I was drawn to listen to all the way through rather then skipping bits. All good stuff, I'm shocked that so few people vote.
Cool! Although I have to say that I'm a bit shocked you skip though them if I'm honest, I think the composers deserve a full listen No worries though, I think that's the way a lot of people listen to music these days. Bit sad really.
  3.
If youre comparing me to cowell you can f**k right off
Of course not! I was thinking more Louis Walsh
  4. Very well said charic! There really is a wealth of wonderful music here, and every track (I just finished listening to them all in sequence) has so much personality, that's the one thing that's really struck me above all else, and it's to be cherished and valued so very highly. Best of luck to everyone, let the public decide! It's BassChat's X FACTOR Time! And of course many thanks to 13 Guitar for the amazing prize!
  5.
Unfortunately with no functioning mixing desk I don't have a usable recording set up at the moment. Good luck to who got something done. I'm saving listening to everyone's entries until the official voting thread starts.
That's such a damn shame Mike I'd almost want you to win so I could see what bass design you came up with!
  6.
When does voting start? I was hoping to get an entry in for this. I had some ideas worked out and was going to rope Mr Venom in to do a guest vocal. Unfortunately earlier in the month my mixing desk decided to stop being a mixing desk and turn into a £3500 door stop instead... :-(
Mate, I reckon you have time. charic is probably still in Norwich
  7. I had to remaster mine after giving it a blast on the hifi, way too much rogue low end and the final section was too quiet so a bit of automation later and it sounds fine. By god I've learned some sh*t this morning! Charic, please use this version, thank you! http://soundcloud.co...h-me-now-or-the Although I have changed the link in my original post so you'll have the right one anyway.
  8.
I had time to join in, and looks like i just made it in time. Mash up of Scooby Doo, dirty old dodgy Jim and both sides of the Mexican 'Day of the dead festival'. [Carnival celebrations and the more sinister side] https://soundcloud.c...-scooby-doo-doo Garry
Very nice indeed Garry! Lovely production too.
  9.
I'm guessing the site owners are making tweaks but there's now no indication of new posts added to threads. Didn't there used to be a little indicator when new posts had been added?
This is where you want to read and post about all these issues. They guys are working on it mate. http://basschat.co.uk/forum/34-site-issues/
  10.
Am off to do a gig right after work and won't be home until after midnight so it literally is too late (I don't think it's going to make enough difference to warrant the effort anyway, Nigel )
Oh well, have a great gig to compensate mate
  11.
Mine was way back on page six of this thread, mate. It's just that it sounds a bit sad to me now Serioulsy, I am a bit annoyed that two of the (many) VSTs I used don't seem to want to transfer from midi to audio. I play it back in Cubase and it is there but when I create an audio file, it is not (there is a drone under the opening speech that carries on through the whole first section and a bass part that comes in under the vibes sound in the middle - their absence is not a death blow but it does impede the forward momentum of the piece). Too late now.
Oh of course it is, sorry, I've not had much time to look at the thread until now, or listen to much of the music. I'll have a listen tonight. It's a real pisser when things like that happen, I feel for you mate. It's not too late though!
  12.
I didn't want a stupid custom bass anyway....
Oh Rob No entry this month mate?
  13.
Cheers Ed. Good to know it sounds ok. It's never ideal mixing on just headphones, but it's what I'm stuck with. A bit like painting in the dark, or something! Paul Thanks Nige! I sound like a Bee Gees tribute act when the backing vocals are solo'd but they seem to sound ok when dumped in with the rest of the mix. Must say I didn't plan the harmonies at all - a happy accident there. Definitely a personal song, but had fun trying to work in Savile, Scooby and Mexican festivities. We didn't make it easy for yourselves, did we mate??
I'll admit, I chose my picture because it made me laugh, I liked yours because it was a great excuse to get some Mexican Mariachi feel going on in the first section, but yeah, not the easiest of images to combine into a piece initially. BUT, I think the music on here shows that people got some great concepts from them. I did some research into the Day of the Dead festival and got some ideas, but it took a week to get my ideas together and decide how to approach the music. It sort of developed organically after that. I love happy accidents! So inspiring when thye happen isn't it, opens up a new musical palette.
  14.
http://soundcloud.co...ob/bad-riddance PS: it's mixed solely on headphones, so I'm keen to know how it sounds on your own systems. Most likely either either a tinny wreck or a muddy soup, but hopefully somewhere between the two.
Mine is mixed solely on headphones too. Not even proper ones, just my Sennheiser i300 ear buds. I have some expensive KRK studio monitoring headphones which I use for tracking. When I mix, I get the basic level balance, effects, eq, etc on the KRKs, then I do the mix with the ear buds into the MacBook while sitting on the sofa with a glass of wine and a cigarette The only time I used my monitor speakers was when I tracked the guitar solo and that was only so I could get some volume feeding back into the pickups for a more live sound. Yours sounded fine on my ear buds mate.
  15.
Ok I'm done. Found it tricky deciding how to approach this month's challenge, but settled on a dreary little number about how people can be deceptive, and how when relationships turn to ruin it spoils the memories associated with them - just like it has done with Savile, a once national hero but now a figure of hate (I used to love Jim'll Fix It as a kid…). It's very much based on a past relationship of my own, in which I had a chunk of years ruined by the discovery that my then betrothed was in fact a cheating swine. I found the only way of moving on was to let those memories fade and die and be happy about doing so (a nod to the Mexican day of the dead festival, where the second photo comes from). 'Twas a long time ago and I've since happily got hitched to Mrs Skol. But I still found it very cathartic to write about. Anyway, enough of that old bollocks… have a listen: http://soundcloud.co...ob/bad-riddance PS: it's mixed solely on headphones, so I'm keen to know how it sounds on your own systems. Most likely either either a tinny wreck or a muddy soup, but hopefully somewhere between the two.
That's great mate! Great tune and I like the vocals, especially the harmonies. There's some nice melody and harmony going on in the music. Really like it Paul! Full of personality too, I totally get that it's very personal.
  16. How funny, my misses used to go out with your predecessor Gary many years ago Have a great show mate.
  17.
I haven't had a chance to listen to any entries since the first couple, but I'm imagining that your JS impression involves sitting the bass on your knee, fiddling with it's bits & then fingering it? I'm still at work, so can't hear anything (I'll be here til 9:30 ).
Dirty bastard.
  18.
Judging by the quality I think the prize this month has inspired people to up there game but I think that we're all learning as a result which is cool.
I think you're right but I reckon it's more about really putting some effort in. I'm sure we all have some very funky ideas, but it's about turning them into audible reality and that can take a lot of work. I can't play keys for instance and had to work hard to get what I wanted onto tape. I have to get a keyboard now dave_bass5 lent me his about six months ago and I'd hardly used it. Now I am desperate for one of my own! Thanks Dave!! So I think the prize may have driven people to put more work in and you're right, it shows. There's some cracking stuff in here! I've not had the chance to hear all of them but I love Lord Sausage's, and for me, Blademan's is a great big smack in the face of personality. I know Blade is a bit down on himself and says he just hacks at it, but he's played to his strengths this month and the results are there, he should be very pleased with himself. I'm going to have a listen to all the tracks tomorrow night.

    Help BC

I bought a lanyard last week. I have to say it looks kool and is very bloody useful! I have two ID cards at work and the lanyards here are not big enough so I'm rocking a lanyard that has BC instead of BBC
  20.
Had fun doing this and really enjoyed the banter, great competition, great site and great prize. Would personally give a major organ to win the bass but whoever wins will deserve it, the standard has been really good, everyone has been really friendly and there have been some great entries, learned loads as I have never done a song before in its entirety, just done stuff jamming with others, so its been a great but steep learning curve. Good luck to everyone involved, and I really do mean that!
Very well said mate!
  21.
sha-woddy-woddy. I'll leave now....
22.
Damn Nige, that is some crazy bass! You dont play the bass, you whip it to within an inch of its life and then make love to it
Yeah but how do you rate my Jimmy Savile impression? Cheers mate
  23.
that was awesome!

I think Nige is a potential winner again this month...
Aww guys Of course it would be incredible to win a custom bass, but I can happily say that what I've gained from writing and recording this piece is something that is beyond all the winning and losing and competition. I've made some music that I love, it was enormous fun and very challenging, and frustrating at times. I am 100% better as a musician for it. There is some superb music in this thread that caters to a lot of tastes, someone will win, and they'll fully deserve it Thanks again, you are very kind
  24.
Well I reckon you could make your stuff a commercial concern if you wanted to Nige, sounds very polished to me. For me the freedom in these challenges is being able to do something different to my usual electronic stuff... messing about with real (and toy!) instruments, having a crack at singing, etc. I'd never have done that sort of thing otherwise. You could even call it a "musical journey"! (if you were, like, a tw@t or something). Can't thank Charic enough for kick-starting all this. Basschat Medal of Honour for that one, I reckon. Can't blame him enough for my new blisters either. Swings and roundabouts. Uploading mine tonight when I get home. It's nowhere near the skill level of you guys but heh, simple things for simple minds
Looking forward to hearing it Paul!
  25.
Finally, a Saturday night when I've not got an early start the next day. I will really try to get to this one!
Excellent mate!
