1.
does anyone have any experience of this. im looking to get a good drum instrument for Reaper in the new year and from what ive seen and read it heard it seems a good bit of kit for the money. i particularly like the loops you can drop in rather than fully programme if anyone has used this and would recommend it let me know what your thoughts on it are. alternatively any other recommendations would be great. cheers
That track I did for the Nov competition was done with EZDrummer in Reaper. It's really good. All about dropping in their loops and editing in the MIDI piano roll, I'm a total noob and found it really easy.
 2. You are from Montmartre and I win my five quid
 3. Thanks Sean, it was a great night! Really enjoyed it! We got a lot of great compliments again and sold some CDs. Two musicians in the audience told me they thought I was French, because I play my Zulu funk in a Parisienne style apparently, weird huh? There were even a couple of skinny jeans pointy shoos kids from N London in there who told me they loved it, even more weird This gig looks like it's going to go quarterly which is great, we don't often get together so hopefully we'll be doing more. Love to do Passing Clouds again too. Cheers.
 4.
And don't forget, I heard you on the radio, and high-jacked the show with my opinion on Slough curry-houses! The cosmos will converge soon enough, and all will be revealed.. Hope all is well at Château Dale
Yes! You were! Things are god mate thank you Hope they are for you too man.
 5.
Yeah, great. Great to read this seeing as I was not there. And even if you had played tomorrow, the gig I could have made, it would have been crap. Even though it's cancelled. Blinking marvellous. It feels like I'm cursed never to see Kit and her Richardsons.
Weird innit. The band I play about four gigs a year in you've seen twice. The band I play most often in circumstances have got in the way. Sean, I promise you, you will be a guest at a Kit Richardson gig next year
 6.
Was a very good gig at Bush Hall too. S'how I feel about my band's last couple of gigs (Half Moon, Green Note) - great to end the year on a high and with the promise of an even better 2013 in prospect* * musically and for you Nige personally now that Diane's on the road to recovery
Thank you mate! You too man, I know you've had some 'times' this year aswell.
 7.
I'm not concerned about the youtube videos, as has been pointed out people post these for various motivations. The slap one was excellent though IMHO, nice relaxed style. Three comments from my own experiences; 1) Most musicians' concept of busy is too busy for a pop or rock recording. I've fallen foul of this myself in the past, and still do sometimes. It's in our nature; even with great experience, you can't always hear the overview of the music as well as you think, and what works in your musical mind doesn't always work well with everything else. 2) If you are going to have a busy part accepted onto a recording, you have to really nail the time and feel. It must bring immediate joy to those who hear it. 3) Bass is for the most part an accompaniment instrument. That doesn't mean you can't create special parts; it means that coming up with special parts that fulfil this requirement is particularly challenging. Jennifer
As is usual, I agree with everything you say. And I would like to add that I find it saddening, but also very useful that a lot of bassists seem to aspire to fill space instead of create it
 8.
An average function band anywhere in mainland Europe sounds much worse than that , trust me . That's why British function bands get work abroad . Anyway , the point isn't the band it's his playing , which in this example is busy but it's tight, in time and in tune, , although doubtless someone will be along to dissect his shortcomings shortly . No one is trying to say he is the new Richard Bona , but he is no chump either .
A BASIC requirement of any musician. The band are all playing in time, but for me they couldn't sound much more disjointed and independent. I'll be honest and say I thought it was awful, and I agree with TNiT. He is playing four minutes of fills. It all sounds very clever, but all it does is makes me feel anxious and irritable. The only way that would get me dancing is towards the nearest exit.
 9.
The council finally outlaw silk gloves on bass players then?
Promoter confusion. In a way, I am happy to go out on a massive high having played our final Kit Richardson gig of the year at the fabulous Bush Hall, and with the awesome news that we have been offered a headline there in Jan or Feb, at which we will launch the new EP and single. Kit's got a bad cold too and can't sing to the best of her ability, so I suppose it's serendipitous.
 10. Thank you Paul I will post a little report tomorrow. Thanks again mate, much appreciated!
 11.
Is that because it won't raawk? ,)
I think it's basically because 99.9999999999% of the world's population would think you were too stupid to be worthy of gainful employment, feed and water yourself, of have a meanigful relationship that included sexual activity. I happen to be one of those people Seriously mate, don't do it. Get a purpose built fretless. You will devalue a superb custom handbuilt bit of British history so much and unless the fretboard is ebony or composite, or epoxied, it won't really last the distance.
 12.
just realised i typed village instead of hillage, or is there an auto correct here?
No, you meant to type Hillside, Hillfish, or some other completely acceptable nom de stortion
 13.
I'd forgotten that you were involved with TGU... that is one cool outfit of musicians to be a part of - credit to you mate! I've seen them live a number of times. Absolutely superb. Were you part of the line-up when they played up in Manchester a couple of years ago? Anyway, hope it goes well tonight Nige. It's difficult for me to travel to gigs these days (on account of Skol Jnr still being a tiddler), but I'll get word out among mates in London who might want to come along to this. Enjoy!
Thanks mate I don't play in TGU the band, just involved in their satellite outfits, formally Krupa, and Doreen Thobekile (RIP sweetie), and now Doreen's daughter Ingrid in London Zulu. Sheema, TGU's sitarist, plays bass live for TGU on a few songs, synth bass on the rest. Glad you like TGU, they are fabulous, great musicians with great vision, skills and musicality. I have learned a lot playing with them, and it's such great fun! N x
 14. Sorry for anyone who planned to come, gig is cancelled Nx
 15.
You have come in twelve bars to late mate - The comp is all done and dusted, and he won..... Garry
16.
Hey Nige, can't make it I'm afraid but hope its a blast!
Thanks Clarky! These gigs we do at the Mau Mau usually are a lot of fun
 17. I'm probably not even close to 200. It's weird really, I've been playing in bands on and off for nearly 30 years, albeit with many dry spells. I haven't been nervous doing gigs for about 28 years, and I am completely comfortable on stage. In fact I feel happier and safer on a stage than anywhere else.
 18. Rock your Zulu butt, tonight at the Mau Mau in Ladbroke Grove. We are on at about 9.45. Cheers, Nx
 19.
you mean Anth?
Gary Dunn.
 20.
^ "To much booze and he was bustin' To find a quite place that he could trust in But stumbling blind he fell with a thud Hitting the dirt like Max Clifford..."
21.
you .. you could even say hes being busy, but the core of the song is there.. the root notes of the groove are played but with some flare.. and he leaves space were appropriate...
Interesting, not once did I think he was being busy, showboating, or being an arse. Everything he did made the song move and the vocal shine.
 22.
I use a cheap Bespeco VM 13 swell pedal - it seems to work fine - and is really light (something that I find more and more appealing these days). I'm sure there are some youtube clips of the Gong tour with better audio than these - I'll have to do some browsing. We recorded many of the gigs - so, hopefully, we'll get around to releasing a live CD/DVD at some time. I played with the Steve Hillage Band around Europe (as support to Gong) a couple of years ago - I'm optimistic that there will be something happening again in the not too distant future. Here's a clip from the Zappanale festival in Germany -
Thanks Dave, the sound quality was rubbish! So thanks for this one I hope a good DVD is released as it deserves to be. Octave Doctors is one of my favourites, great playing all round on this, although Steve's guitar sounds a little dry, it was massive at the show I went to, great big panned delays. I must have seen the Hillage/Gong tour the same year you were on it in Europe, but clearly Mike was playing bass on the UK leg. I LOVE your soundscape type stuff. I can't leave my swell pedal alone, but I feel like I need more flexibility than the POD can offer these days so I may well go your route at some point. Thanks again, I appreciate your taking the time to post this interesting and useful information.
 23.
who says youtube vids are bad?
Now that is the sh*t! THAT is how to play with sensitivity and groove, and panache. He's completely at ease with what he's playing and thinking. I can usually tell when someone's head and fingers are disconnected, his are perfectly aligned.
 24.
Good point, but quite the opposite as far as i'm concerned. I couldn't care less about winining. Fortunately i'm arrogant enough not to need validation by others. ha ha You will see in how far removed from classic conventions my piece is. As i've said before, i'll be surprised if i get one vote.
I dunno, I am very competitive, but won't compromise in order to win. I really liked your previous one. But having thought about this a bit, I reckon most people can only relate to the obvious and the winner will have probably a more literal interpretation, probably with a vocal. 'A fat old boy on Christmas eve Can't drink as much As he'd have you believe Had too much and hit the gravel Going down faster Than Jimmy Savile etc etc etc ... '
 25. Horrible. What a mess. He's got facility, but there's not a lot of music going on. You can be busy as f*** if it has real personality and it's right for the song, but he looks like he's trying far too hard to impress with technique, which is poor anyway as he's not in any way locking with the kit or the vocal. He needs to play with some good musicians and grow out of it.
