Here's an 11 year old playing with Walter Trout, he's bloody good! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjWENNsinT8
Care to answer my question ??? EDIT : On second thoughts......no need.
Correct, no need, because if you read the thread you will find the answers are contained within it
-
I cant see why people are getting so animated. The OP asked people to vote for the young man (no gun to the head ). You think it's a good idea......vote. You dont .....ignore. Where's the problem ?
Ok, so you don't understand, cool. No problem
-
Tom, if you read this, no hard feelings from me mate. Sorry if I ripped into you a bit harshly, but you sound like you can handle it
-
And yours if fair comment too but I guess for me the issue lay in whether he may have been asked to do this as a favour or took it upon himself to offer his help which we're not likely to find out anyway. Of course, if it's the latter then he should've been a little more informed and diplomatic in the approach. However, there have been many a time when I've been asked to help someone out, not thought it through and it's all gone wrong. I guess I just tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. As an aside, I saw the video and couldn't believe he'd more than ruined a classic Eric & Ernie number so he wouldn't have got my vote anyway.

Although I can understand some of the views raised in this thread (leaving aside the imported crap talent show bit where the OP has obviously forgotten that for someone to "export" something, someone has to equally "import it so the USA did actually want it in the first place) It's easy to overlook that the OP's intentions were well meant if a tad misguided. probably something that most of us have been guilty of at some point.
Fair comment mate, but well meant according to whose principles? If you look at Tom's quote below, he said this contest was no different to the 'rubbish' that is the X Factor and Pop Idol, which I disagree with because all the contestants are heard before the voting in those programmes, so it actually has more integrity than Tom's contest, ostensibly anyway. However the last sentence does it for me. And as I pointed out earlier, this kid's had loads of exposure already and collected many accolades and played 'everywhere'. So either Tom decided to leave that bit out, or the kid's bio is full of bullshit. I'm sorry but it pissed me off because it seems unfair, manipulative, and because he made a personal and highly ignorant dig at the UK, the place he expected to get help from! I know many of the colonists think we're a bunch of abortion-loving, squirrel-eating, godless commies, but criticising the X Factor really takes the biscuit, old egg
This is a very local contest and the kid is very young and doesn't have the exposure a few in the contest do. Because it is a Social media based contest, it's no different then those two pieces of rubbish, X Factor and UK Idol, that you exported here. Talent is required, but its really about the votes and who you can get to vote.

Yes but has he made it his own?
Joe will get a few more royalties if the kid turns out to be Blind Lemon Bieber.
Not like you to be so slow at responding Nige where a diatribe is due? As for the OP I found it a perfect example of why so much modern media is bollox, not least that to even enter a vote - notwithstanding all of Nige's post above - you have to "like" Louisiana Travel - if I may borrow your "WT actual F" for a second please Nige? A classic example of why I was so glad that this forum had the good taste to reject the trialled "like" system on here. ........... and for that reason ...... I'm out! ...... damn, damn, wrong over exposed, good idea at the start but spoilt by the mainstream TV show.
I'm too busy to post 22 rants a day like I used to mate
Calm down, man! Did you never even understand it's really for helping out poor bass legend Joe Osborn? OMfG, doesn't anybody read thread titles anymore? best, bert
-
100% agreement Nige, especially about the X-Factor observation. Hoisted by his own petard there I think
Did you hear the kid's music? It's ok, but certainly nothing special, and he's certainly not a prodigy or wunderkind like it says on his bio on CD Baby. There are 10 year old kids playing classical piano concertos with full orchestra to a high level of proficiency and expression out there, so a bit of rock n roll from a 14 year old guitar player with a young and immature voice and lyrics doesn't blow my head off. None of this is the kid's fault, he could be great one day, just like a lot of us could, but he has the privilege Tom, Joe and others on his side getting his career started too early before he has built up a credible body of work. As it is, it's a 14 year old lad singing and playing guitar reasonably well for his age. I'm not sure Tom and Joe making a novelty out of it is really very helpful. Also (and this is what I find galling after Tom's pleas for votes to give the poor talented kid a career leg up) it sounds like he hardly had a problem being heard before this Louisiana contest .. "Album Notes The terms “prodigy” and “wunderkind” are tossed around today much like the term “superstar.” But every so often, a musician comes along that justifies the use of these titles and more. Matthew Davidson is just such a talent. Davidson got his first taste of guitar at the tender age of three, when he received a toy guitar for Christmas. He's never looked back. In 2007, he won his first electric guitar from the legendary James Burton at his Foundation’s Guitar Showdown. Since then, he’s won numerous accolades, including being named the recipient of the 2011 Robert Johnson Blues Foundation New Generation Award. He’s played everywhere from The Dallas House of Blues and The New Orleans Jazz Fest to B.B. King’s Blues Club in Memphis and The Strand Theatre in his hometown of Shreveport, LA. Recognizing raw talent, legendary bassist and member of L.A.'s famed Wrecking Crew, Joe Osborn took Matthew under his wing, mentoring him from "promising newcomer" to "breakout talent." The EP disc you hold in your hands is the result of that musical collaboration. With musical influences as diverse as The Beatles, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Maroon 5 and John Mayer, Davidson is a triple-threat: guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, performing rock, blues and pop with equal command. Davidson’s career trajectory is trending upward. Now sit back and tune in, as Matthew Davidson steps up. " I would suggest Tom Richards should be following up this thread by asking us to have a listen to this kid's ep and buying it if we like it. Just like the rest of us have to do. Here's the CD preview .. http://www.cdbaby.co...matthewdavidson This is the prize he won, a video by Louisiana Tourism, looks like a great place to be ..
I respectfully disagree, especially with the dishonest comment. You are free to do whatever you feel best. I do know several votes came in from the UK, so to those of you who voted, thank you. Personally, I know Joe doesn't just work or play with anybody. He thinks the kid is a talent, and given his track record as a player and producer, it is hard to argue that he doesn't know what he is talking about. So, if you are inclined to vote, thank you. If not, then fine as well.
Hey man, you sound quite pissed at what you feel are the negative views expressed here. And accusing the UK of exporting rubbish to the USA (WT actual F !!) has done you no favours whatsover. I think you need to get a grip and get this in perspective. YOU have just created your own little X Factor here. It has NOTHING whatever to do with this kid's 'talent' (whatever the f*** that means), or music. This has NOTHING to do with music. Or integrity and fairness. It is simply your wish to give the kid a leg up via a popularity contest because your mate Joe thinks he's more talented than a bunch of other talented musicians. Your arrogance and misguided altruism has actually angered me. This 'kid' can afford lessons with Joe Osborn, there are MANY extremely talented young musicians in the world who will never get that opportunity, in fact many will never even get the opportunity to realise they have the potential to be great musicians. The vast majority of great musicians are struggling and can't support themselves through music. This forum is full of talented musicians who work f***ing hard day and night and hope one day their music will get noticed and that they can make a living doing what they are passionate about instead of having to take a low wage selling sh*t to unsuspecting people in Asda (oh, that's some horrible company the USA exported to the UK isn't it?). FFS! /rant

I saw a few posts about not getting any inspiration from the pictures for these competitions. I think the pictures should fire your imagination, your music comes from YOU, not the picture itself. Of course if you want to win the competition based on an assumption that there will be basic common interpretations that voters will identify with, and be impressed by your very literal compositional and stylistic interpetation (Fat / Drunk / Asleep / Humiliated / Christmas .. etc) you are probably going to have a very hard time with that, and you are playing to the picture and the voters. What I think is the most useful technique is to create a story behind the picture to fuel your own compositional imagination. The problem lies in that I believe most of the entrants would naturally like to win, and so they may be predisposed to thinking of what criteria the voters are skewed towards, this is highly limiting creatively, and not the purpose of the picture. Or at least not to my mind.
I used to be an avid buyer of the old bassist magazine and still have quite a few copies which I dig out and re-read from time to time, for the last few years I have been playing guitar in a band and was buying both Guitar and Bass and the now defunct Guitar Buyer magazines, I have to admit that towards the end I got increasingly fed up with the "metal" direction Guitar buyer seemed to be going and I stopped buying it. I decided to give BGM a try and have brought 3 or 4 issues but I have really struggled to engage with them. I think the bass world is really lacking some of the big personalities of old and I also think that mainstream music is missing those equally big basslines of old (the likes of Stevie Wonder, Pino with both Paul Young and Gary Numan, the whole new romantic scene with the likes of Heaven 17 and Duran Duran etc) I maybe wrong but the bass doesn't seem to be as cool as it once was. I had commented to my wife whilst looking at a recent issue that nearly every bass reviewed was a 5 or 6 string monster offering it's future well heeled owner little change from 3 grand, something that after 20 plus years of playing to a good standard I still cannot ever envisage paying for a guitar, especially a brand new instrument! I am not afraid of spending decent money on a bass but find the high end exotica often reviewed of little or no interest and judging by the bands I am seeing they are not finding their way on to many stages. Ok so to me you have limited perzazz to work with at the moment and sometimes it feels like there is a wealth of really low budget starter (and give up quickly) basses and lots of ultra high end (if only I could get a mortgage) basses and not a lot of exciting ones in between, so what would I like to see...you cant beat a good old shootout....how does a standard stingray compare against a similar priced Ibanez or Fender, what else fits the bill, what barges it's way into the shootout and says "I might not have the badge image but I can beat you all for quality and sound" I would like to see back to back comparisons between digital amps, transistor amps and good old heavy valve amps...I would like to see recommendations about used bases and guides as to their values and finally I would like to see recommendations as to where to find those great basslines that people must still be writing. Whilst writing this I was racking my brain to think about what I really liked about the BGM's that I brought and one series of articles stood head and shoulders above everything else for me and that was what other musicians look for in a bass player, having just gone back from guitar to full time bass I found those articles really informative. I would like to fall in love with your magazine and I will keeppicking up issues and see where it goes
Good post.
Funnily enough Nige Universal have done a deal (which I;m sure you're aware of) with the Zappa family and have been re-releasing a ton of the FZ back catalog which I'm happy to say is sitting on various shelves in my house - While I'm not sure it'd be feasible (without going on a massive time consuming mission) to track down all of Frank's top bass men I do think a review focusing on their different styles and the albums on which they appear would be a cracker well worth writing... I'll drop the Ed a line soon on that. Mx
Yeah I know, I have been very naughty recently and bought a few from iTunes on impulse, marvellous! I know what you mean, but your suggestion is a very good one, Mike, I like it!
Cool, thanks for the advice all. I forgot to mention also, we formed the band after starting work on the album for the purposes of recording it and subsequently gigging it, so we're going to need to build a fanbase from scratch... In fact, gigging is a bit of an afterthought for us really.
Make it your foremost thought if you want to sell anything and build a fanbase. People connect with what they see more than what they hear initially, if they can connect with your vibe and personalities, you have a chance.

Well done mate. Get it on Bandcamp Get your codes. Join the PRS and register with PPL Put some video on YouTube Talk about it on Facebook Don't overdo it with Facebook or you'll piss some people off and it will have a negative effect, gentle feeding and watering is the way. Gig gig gig gig gig gig gig, sell albums at gigs, approach people at the gigs and talk to them, ask their opinions, standing at the little trestle table at the back is not much use. Best of luck!
Anyone know what hillage is up to at the moment? I always like the bass guy on the live herald album.
Mr Hillside resides in London and is busy with System 7, with Miquette. It was great to see him with his own band and with Gong a couple of years ago!
Hi all - I just got a Google alert about this thread - I think I joined Basschat a few years ago but I'm afraid I haven't visited since! So - silldx - thanks very much for your comment. I've been having a fantastic time on the Gong tour - we started in France in October, went to Holland, Switzerland, the UK and finished in Japan a few days ago. (So sorry Mep - you've missed it) To clarify the equipment I'm using - your right about the Vigier fretless - though the fingerboard is actually Delta metal - it's like brass but is harder - it is an absolutely superb bass! The Markbass gear is a Little Mark Tube 800 and Two 604 cabs - although in Tokyo I used a Momark black 800 and a Standard 104HF cab. The pedal board is a Keith McMillan Softstep - a very versatile MIDI pedalboard that is also very small and light - so perfect for touring. I used a Focusrite Saffire audio interface. On the Macbook Pro I'm using Ableton Live - I have one channel as a bass effects unit - using various plug ins - and other channels of various sound samples that I've programmed to augment some of the songs and provide soundscapes. btw - which gig were you at?
Dave, what a delight to make contact on BC. You really were very inspiring and wonderful to hear. I'm ashamed to say I'd not heard of you until I did some research after the show Thanks so much for sharing your rig! Do you use any expression pedals? I myself use a POD X3 LIVE but I'm starting to think I could use my MacBook and a Floorboard, I like the immense flexibility, even though the POD is fabulous, I'm limited to the firmware. I want to get more synth stuff going on. I also have a Focusrite Saffire. Those Keith McMillan Softsteps look great! I was at the London show at the Shepherd's Bush Empire. You all looked like you were having a ball I've been a huge Gong and Hillage fan since about 1980, and never had a chance to see either live until recently. The new band is fantastic! Thanks again for sharing Dave! ---------------------------------------- For anyone who missed it, here's a clip from just in front of where I was, watching my new bass hero, Dave Sturt http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--vHjDLqjdU

vibrato, string bending, 'string knocking' - what do you reckon?
xilddx replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
yeah that's the one i like - the pre-bent note released to a semi tone down. did you ever move over from pick to fingers when going from guitar to bass? - my alternating picking is the only thing i got really good at on guitar so i'm sticking with it!
I do use pick occasionally if I want a good punchy palm mute sound, and if I have to play anything really fast like 32nd notes. I think I'm like you, I have a very fast left hand that my finger technique can't keep up with, but I don't need to be doing more than 8th notes and a few 16ths with the bands I'm in so rarely if ever use a pick live. If I'm doing my own stuff for fun I will often use a pick. I use lots of effects too, and get a lot of guitar sounds going for texture on one band. I think being a guitarist is really useful, I can't understand why a lot of people only want to play one instrument. I play a bit of drums too and approach bass a bit like a guitar-playing drummer -
vibrato, string bending, 'string knocking' - what do you reckon?
xilddx replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
Oh yes, I have a bad habit of string 'knocking' ! It's not good in the studio at all and I have to discipline myself not to, but live it really helps get my mojo on. -
vibrato, string bending, 'string knocking' - what do you reckon?
xilddx replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
I'm also a guitarist who progressed to bass. I use on the bass pretty much every technique I used on guitar. String bends are cool, but I like the pre-bend release into a low note, especially with a swell on the volume pedal and nasty distortion and flanger and stuff - sounds wickid!
