I'll see how long it might take to get another in, meanwhile back to the drawing board...
I have a Trans Black 5 string fretless coming in next week - a really great bass for the money! Mark

I am totally gutted to find this out so late! I had no idea until today about this....I have not really spent any time on BC and was surprised when Si had not responded to my newsletters from Bass Direct. To be honest Simon has been my mentor now since I had the idea to start my business 3 1/2 years ago. I cannot put into words just how much Simon helped and inspired me from day1. I need to let this sink in, but in truth I am indebted to all the work and help that Simon offered me for little in return...a true friend and inspiration to me, I feel a great loss in my life right now. My thoughts are with the family right now and I know all you guys have been great friends to Simon as he was one the top members of this forum. Mark

  4.
I think its a slightly easier and tame version of what TC used to make the Staccato (and probably the RH450 baked in tone) so yep Im thinking you can pretty much nail the Staccato 51 with an RH450. I think there are a fair few players like yourself who would like this software to be made a product to either be shipped with the amp and/or an accessory you can buy with the cable/etc so you can realy open up a flat tone you want. I would definitely like to see it hit the market! I can see why certain players will prefer the Staccato voicing, and there are some chaps talking on Talkbass about which they prefer. I must admit I quite liked them both, but I went with the run of the mill RH450. I agree on how well they have done. A few years back, no one would have expected this, and all of a sudden, the TC amps are getting as much coverage as some of the really big players in the market. I think they're involvement with the players has worked wonders as it shows they are willing to listen to what we want. They are also really friendly and helpful with emails which is a big help. I admit, the 3 x TC cabinets is a strange one, but as per Mark above, its because TC are confident about their cabinet ratings. It states in the manual quite clearly that the RH450/Staccato can power 3 x TC cabinets with no problems, and it even gives you examples of how to stack them. I have yet to try this but Im definitely going to at some point.
I have had the RH450 powering 3, 410s in the shop, that moves some air :-0 The tuning on the Staccato is fairly extreme IMHO and suits the player who is using a bass and technique similar to Rocco (eg single coil bridge sound played over the bridge) or those that want a more scooped sound with massive low end and sparkly highs, for most the more earthy tones of the RH450 and Classic seem to be perfect and the tuning done by the pros at TC is bang on IMO, IME. 5.
The heat, the heat! All adds to the onstage pyrotechnics!
Brings a whole new meaning to the expression "going out with bang" ;-) Mark
  6.
Ah OK. So I presume that they have tested with their own cabs and other cabs to prove that their cabs provide a high enough load and others don't? Or is the cynic in me thinking it's a ploy to sell more of their cabs?!!!
It's not a ploy, the reality is that most domestic bass cabs are not exactly 4 or 8ohm, plus as you load the cabs some vary dramatically in impedance (another whole topic) however there are cabs which are more stable and consistent. The eminence loaded TC cabs are such, as are the EA cabs for example. Personally I do not recommend or advise running any amp down to 2ohm or thereabouts as you can a big strain on the system which can cause premature failure if pushed too hard. Mark
  7.
Isn't the difference between the Staccato and the RH450 the preamp settings. Presumably if TC divuldged the settings for the Staccato, you could get the exact same amp from the RH450? Preferred the Staccato over the RH450 when I tested them out, but the tweakability factor of these amps to get my "amp voice" is appealing. Won't be purchasing unless this software comes out though as out the box, they don't quite do it for me yet. Great show by TC though... they really have come from nowhere and taken it by storm! PS - still intriuged as to why you can run 3 x 8 ohm cabs from TC yet only 2 from any other manufacturer. What's that about?!
Many class D amps are stable down to 2.6ohm (EA, TC have confirmed this), however due to variations between cabinets they do not make this public knowledge nor recommend it, and there you have it. 8.
That's the one. I'm trying to find a folding trolley that also has a storage bag on it, preferably in Black Watch tartan. It'll be handy for keeping packets of mints in.
Well I have to admit I think you guys are too close....coming soon the new "Zimmer" range with built in wheels and fold out arms and shopping basket adapter ;-) M
  9.
Hello Sinlge ten?
Close but no banana! If I told I would have to kill you.......under wraps, all will be revealed soon enough ;-) Mark
  10.
Cheers, Mark I'd love to try the AEs to see if I get on with their tone. I suspect I'll prefer the HS's, but the idea of slightly lighter cabs is very appealing..! But until I can try them, I'm trying to sit on my hands....
I know what you mean, t for old school blues/rock etc I think the HS210 nail it, add the RH450 you have and you have an ideal rig for the 4 string Fender/Old school vibe IMHO. The weight saving is cool, but the tone is the most important part and the HS210 are so compact that I don't think that the weight saving is so important, I always try to sell the cabs on their tone. Mark
  11.
Hmm.. I was *toying* with going down the AE210 route at some point. I may have to hang on now...
You have the HS210s, now a pair of these will give you a tight low end response similar to that os the selaed NV610 (not quite the same though) where as the AE210 and the AE410 have extended low end response and slightly more aggressive mid range compared to the smooth mid range from the ceramic loaded HS cabs. Mark
  12.
I'm guessing something with a 15... Either that or a start to a new range. Or, possibly another type of 2x12.
Nope - no 15's in this cab, let's just say it is "compact and bijoux" ;-D Mark
  13.
Mark at BassDirect has all the details up: Bergantino AE212 - £829 Based on the hugely successful AE112 this vertically oriented cabinet is designed as a one cab solution for those looking for a big sound with low weight. With sparkling high end details, plenty of mid-range energy and deep low end the AE212 will deliver a huge sound in a relatively compact and easy to move cabinet. Utilising Bergantino own custom Neodymium drivers you can expect to achieve effortless and controlled sound at any volume. We suggest using a minimum of a 500w at 4ohm amp but this cab will thrive on amps of up to 1000w. Stack a second cab on top for a really massive sound where appropriate. New for 2010! Model AE212 specifications: •2 x 12" Custom Neodymium drivers with 7 oz magnets •high intelligibility 1" tweeter •custom phase - coherent crossover with tweeter level control •power handling - 600 watts rms •frequency response: 40hz - 18khz •sensitivity: tbc db @ 1 Watt/1 meter •2 x 1/4" and 2 x neutrik connectors •impedance: 4ohms •dimensions: 31"H x 18-1/2"W x 15"D •78cm x 47cm x 38cm •weight: 55lbs/25 Kgs •This cab works well with high power amplifiers from 500 - 1000w at 4Ω
Ah - the secret is out, this is a cab I have asking to be made for a while now and Jim Bergantino seems to have got it right. I have yet to hear the cab, however I am sure it will be the biz as all of these cabs are all road tested through some shops and users before they get the okay. Stocks should be arriving at the end of the Summer and will be in 4Ω only. We toyed with using a "kick up" stand but this seemed a little unstable, however those who use these cabs are aware of how "transparent" the sound is even off axis so intelligibility is always first class. Regards Mark PS - There is another very cool Bergantino cab coming out soon......
  14.
Bump
OMG - this is a really nice bass (especially now it been set up properly) good luck with the sale. Mark

  16.
Actually it's interesting how different mine is to the Black W&T Ergon you have at Bass Direct. Are you planning to put the BGM review of it up on your site? There were a few friendly wolf whistles at the jam however there's a regular attendee playing a very different old, and probably custom, fretless that is also weird compared to a Fender so they'd been softened up It's far from traditional blues type gathering anyway as one of the core team plays one of those odd angular Music Man Albert Lee guitars.. Despite the very high standard of playing of many of the usual attendees it's the friendliest jam session I know with a bunch of 16 or 17 year olds there regularly, some can play, one can really play... and some can't manage much beyond a bit of slide, but they are still encouraged to have a go.
Si Yep, as soon as I get the pdf of the review it will be on the site ;-) M
  17. Hey - I bet they wondered what hit them with your "fancy looking bass" ;-D Killer sound though! Mark
  18.
Could we have a price for Great Grammas, Mark-Poptart? I might be tempted. I've already got the smaller one. Oh, and can we have a group buy for NV610s? I feel a visit to Warwick coming on ... Cheers Mark
Hi There has been price changes on the Auralex products, the GRAMMA has just gone down and the Great GRAMMA has just gone up and I will be making these adjustments on my site today, however I am happy to offer the BC community deals on the Great GRAMMA at £80 inc shipping (saving of £7) NV610 have also come down in the past six months and are great value considering how minding numbingly good they are!! ;-) Mark PS - Just PM me or call the shop - 01926 886433 and I will sort you out.
  19.
They are great for all the reasons already stated. You should approach Mark at Bassdirect for a deal. 21. Nice one Si It is great news that is sounds as good as it looks - it is soooo cool ;-) Mark
  22. WT are really opening up there horizons with their most recent basses. Initially I felt that "Fodera esque" would have been a fair description, however I have been pushing them to try some new options and they have been working hard on these newer models getting the finishes and electronics perfected. aesthetically there is more to come! Mark PS - This new bass for Old Rocks rocks IMHO, I can't wait to give a whirl ;-)
  23. Mark Your bass will be in the shop next week, I can't wait to see it in the flesh, it is coming with a rather stunning Chronos 5 - HERE The guys at WT are raising the bar with every bass that they make.
