2.
I wish I'd had the time to be able to tell whether I liked Dingwalls or not. When I was at the London Bass Guitar Show earlier this month I had about 20 seconds playing a Dingwalls bass before it was taken off me by someone on the stand. I guess he didn't think I looked worthy of playing one of their £5k basses although to give him his due he did take time to explain the "dual density" body and the theory behind the fanned frets. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to test the 'theory'. As a maker myself I understand the importance of getting your wares out there and exposed to as many potential or future buyers as possible - obviously the 'professionals' showing the Dingwalls basses figured they knew better.
Hi - I am sorry if you did not have a chance to try one of these basses at the show - you are welcome to come to my shop any time and try one in a rather more appropriate situation. As a builder you will appreciate that a show is hardly the best environment to try an instrument and as a stand holder it is difficult to monitor who is a genuinely interested party and who is just coming on the stand for a ride ;-) Regards Mark
 3.
Yeah Dingwall fanned fret basses have been on my "to try" list for ages. Well just Dingwall basses of any shape or form really. I dont think I've ever even seen a single one in a shop. Sigh!
You are in luck - the worlds largest dealer for DINGWALL basses in just over an hour away from you.........:-) Mark

 10.
No in all seriousness I'm not dissing the people who use them! i just can't really think of ANY SERIOUS PLAYERS that use them!!!
Leighton - Mr B does not offer endorsement deals - although many of the Worlds most famous players have approached him interestingly enough, but back off when no free gear/money is available - which tells you everything you need to know about endorsements and deals!!! Anyway - it is more about what YOU want from a cab not what someone who gets it for free stands next to in adverts. Again - I understand this cab did not work for you, however I am still rather taken aback by some of the comments on here, after all, each to their own, one man's meat is another man's poison if we all new what the perfect cab for everyone was life would be rather boring ;-) Regards Mark PS - How is like on the South Coast - I hope you are keeping busy.
 11. Leighton I know you did not get on with your HT112ER which is a shame, but it is impossible to please all the people all the time. I do get secondhand Bergies in the shop from time to time, most are from players who already own Bergs and are either downsizing the herd or swopping to a newer/different Berg cabinet (they usually sell very fast I might add) I will be the first to admit that I see fads all the time and I try to cut through the BS on this and just let the cabs speak for themselves. There is no one cabinet that is universally considered to be the best, however what we do have is a great selection of cabinets all of which bring something different to the party. At Bass Direct I try to stock cabinets that I feel confident about and which perform with great efficiency and wherever possible, little colouration. I do invite customer to bring their own cabs in to the shop to compare to what I have here to hear what is going on. Now I will be the first to admit that a blast in a shop is nothing like a gig (hey, I have played at well over 2000 gigs in my lifetime), however there are many variables in the equation that it is often hard to draw conclusive answers as to why some gear seems to suit certain; players, basses, amps, room, music, more that others. From my experience you should buy the cabinet that fits your form factor (size, weight), your pocket (cost) and primarily the sound and volume you need for your requirements. I am not a "brand" led person - in an ideal world you should close your eyes when trying gear as your eyes can get the better of you. So - in conclusion, you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. Go out and enjoy this varied landscape of bass gear and always remember how lucky we are to have all this great gear to use ;-) Regards Mark

 15.
How the heck does that fanned fret thing work then? looks cool, but......am I just being thick?
Okay - in a nutshell....... Thicker strings require greater length to have similar tension to strings of less mass. Therefore - just like a piano or a harp the heavy strings are longer on a Dingwall and therefore have a similar tension to the thinner (higher) strings - simple! There is a 3/4" difference from string to string. Playability is easy peasy, the money notes from the 3 - 7 fret are almost parallel and your hand naturally wants to move in the direction of the frets when you go low or high on the bass. 4, 5 or 6 string life is so much easier on a Dingwall, but once you are trying to go low there is nothing like the Dingwall. The Afterburner bases have a 37" scale B string (it does not feel that long) which you can drop tune 2, 3 4 or more semitones with no loss of feel or clarity. The SJSP has a 35" B strings which is also amazing and will drop a couple of semi-tones no problem! On the 4 string SP4/SJ$ you have a 34 1/4" E string that drops nicely down to D or lower, on the Afterburner 4 string the E is 36 1/4" so you can drop that baby drop to a low A or lower, no problem - try doing that on your 34" scale regular bass and it is like playing a bit of old rope! I hope that helps, please ask if you need any more information. Regards Mark
 16. Oooh nice - these are going up on my site - Thanks Chris :-D
 17. Thanks Alan, I look forward to seeing you at the show. Regards Mark
 18.
Hi I see you are a asking for original design which I am all for but looking at your basses you don't seem to be buying any of these new original designs and there in lies the problem. Original designs are great but hard to sell so people bring out design to appeal to guys that have a pile of Fender basses like yourself. I have been asked for a Jazz bass I don't know how many times and like Sheldon I agree the world does not need another one but from my point of view my customers are asking for one so there will be J Type launch at the London show. I will however have a selection of my original designs there as well please feel free to come along and try/buy one
If you can't beat them.............. To be honest the Super P came about because Mr S had a all singing Prima Artist 6 but it was overkill for the Jools gig and he loves the tone and vibe of a Precision but wanted something with the Dingwall execution, et voila - the Super P. Mr S was in my shop and I got him on a Super J, he loved the shorter scale length (35" of the Super P and J on the B and 37"on the Afterburners) Sheldon worked his magic and with a little help from Mr East it all came together beautifully. There seems to be a very nostalgic, old school vibe in music today and now Fender Musical Instrument Corporation have lost the battle to hold on to Leo Fenders 1950's and 60s designs the gates have opened for specialist luthiers to use what has now become a "ubiquitous" "bass shape", so why not have a Wolf in sheep's clothing - Mr Swift is one of a growing number of pros taking this route. Mark
 19. Built time is around 5 months on a Dingwall at the moment - I guess these should be here around April. I have 3 five stringers so far but will add a couple of 4 bangers. I have a 'Dave Swift" Super P in Olympic White, Tort p/g, East P Retro and a couple or Super PZs, one passive, one active - I have yet to confirm colours on these, probably a 2 toneburst and a black. I was speaking to Mr Swift and so far he is loving the Super P 5 and is just tweaking strings to get as comfy as possible. I have the Payson strings coming in this week so I will have the choice of; Stainless Steel, Nickel and Flatwounds, all custom wound for the Dingwalls. Regards Mark
 20. Hi all - well I have the first three of these bad boys being made reserved for the shop. 21. Hi - yes I have a T5 in Tobaccoburst available - I have just speaking with Lull and the first batch of eight basses will all in in by the end of January. Regards Mark
