1.
Might also be worth mentioning, what era are you aiming for? There's a big difference between 60s/70's/modern days Ps, also MIJ, MIA, CIJ or whatever else there is. Also I've never played a proper vintage Ray, neither one of those new ones, but from what I know they all sound a bit different too. One thing I know for sure is and I've mentioned it before, 1990's rays (and maybe + - a few years) as mine is will expose your playing much more than a P. If your timing is great, definitely a Ray. If it isn't that well refined, the P will be more "friendly". The Ray will deliver the note you're playing at the exact time you play it, as the P is a bit more rounded and the time of the exact tone attack isnt that clear (don't throw stones at me now, I'm only talking about the time of tone's attack). With the P's I've played that is. Also worth mentioning. When I got my 77 Jazz, it had Fender CS 60s pickups in. I've recently bought a pair of original 70s pickups and the difference is night and day. So much that now I wanna play my jazz more and more. Before with the CS 60s it was more about owning a 70s jazz rather than playing a 70s jazz. Also a few people mention Rays sound terrible on their own. Are you sure you've actually tried genuine Rays? I'd say that's very subjective. In my opinion my ray never sounded bad on its own apart from when it has very old strings. Which is the case with any other bass really.
My usual sound with the Jazz Bass is neck pick-up off, bridge pick-up wide open with the tone rolled all the way up. I just fancy something different. Great responses here. Long may they continue.

3.
You're only interested about our preference? Nothing else? Stingray then. Without hesitation.
I figured that a lot of people would put down their reasons anyway Considering I've not played a Stingray before, I was initially leaning more in that direction simply because the pickup is situated closer to where I'm used to positioning my right-hand thumb on top of the Jazz bridge pickup. I'll definitely play as many variants of both basses as I can between now and the end of January before making a final decision.
4.
Aye, I started with that - but then the OP says he doesn't want our reasons, just our preference. Am not sure what that does beyond revealing that there are horses for courses, mind! To add to the subjectivity, make mine a Stingray
Yes I was just interested in general preferences. I'm going to buy one or the other in January and being a Jazz Bass player for the past sixteen years I haven't yet made up my mind. As ever, excellent responses here from the basschat community.
5. What do you prefer? I don't want to get onto the differences between the two basses, etc. I'm just after your preferences.
6. Thanks gentlemen. I've PM'd him - thanks a lot.
7. Can anyone recommend somebody to make a custom pickguard?
8. Yes I know. Overall I'm satisfied, albeit certainly not happy, with the response. The bass is absolutely superb and that is the most important thing for me so I'm going to keep it.
9. I just spoke to Fender UK who have confirmed that the case my bass has come with is actually correct. I told them that they still have the SKB case listed on their web site against the model of bass I bought - he said that the web site will be updated but that they do reserve the right to change stuff without updating their web site.
10. It is so weird because they ordered it in for me and I can see that the bass, case, etc. is all brand new.
11. The bass is definitely right with a 2013 serial number 'US13...' but I don't think the case is right. Here are some photographs. 12. Hello all - I bought a brand new 2013 Fender American Standard Jazz Bass from an authorised dealer and it has come with a non-SKB case. Does anybody know if that is right?
13. Great bass at a truly unbelievable price!
14. Would you ship it? Using interparcel.com should mean it'll be pretty cheap to send.
15. I hope he's still got it available in January when, I hope, to get my bonus!
16. Anyone got one of these? They look awesome. I see a Precision model of this is available in the 'Basses For Sale' section for a bargain price of £850. I'm amazed it hasn't sold.
17.
This is the most stunning example of a Precision that I've ever seen. What a seriously good looking instrument. I imagine it with a dark tort scratchplate that would almost blend in with that lovely stained ash. I'm not a P-bass player, but if i was i'd want it to look like this. I'm amazed that none of the P-bass legion have snapped up this beauty ... I don't even like Precisions and it has me drooling.
I'm in complete agreement here. I've been after the Jazz version of this for a while - a guy had one on eBay a few weeks ago but it had a maple fingerboard otherwise I'd have gone for it.
18. A beautiful bass! So nice! I hope it stays available until January!
19.
Funny, as I have DR rounds on my P and Fender flats on my J. I like the dynamic range of my 57RI P with its bright-sounding maple neck which keeps its definition when I roll off the tone using the rounds. I like my 62RI Jazz to sound like it does on Jaco's Donna Lee and I use flats with the tone rolled off for that sound playing on the bridge pickup. I think I prefer rounds on my P as its a bit of a slapper too, like me :-)
I read somewhere that Jaco used Rotosound RS55LDs strings?
20.
I really must make more of an effort to try different strings. I settled on D'Addario pro steels a while back and have ended up putting them on all my basses. They are OK and sound like I like strings to sound but there might be something better out there for me. Its just become a habit to order them really.
When I decided to do that myself I'd been using RS66s for about 15 years, I then went through every string I could find and I'm now back with Rotosounds. Not to suggest the same thing will happen to you of course but I think the RS66s is so engrossed in the sound I want that there isn't any point changing for me now.
21.
Me too! I get there after a long journey that involved D'Addarios, Elites, Newtones, DRs, Fenders and several others that left little impression. That said, I do like my strings bright and zingy!
+1. Now I'm set with RS66s, although I do like RS55LDs for a change every now and again.
22. I used to have one and loved it. Wish I hadn't moved it on - and I'm the same as you too, I only own Fender Jazz Basses currently.
23. I played a P/J configured Fender Precision Deluxe 4 this weekend just gone and I liked that a lot. The best of all worlds almost. Jazz bridge growl, classic Precision thump and a passive/active switch. Best thing to do is what you're planning. Go to a store with lots of basses and play them. I'm in the same process myself right now.
24. Yes if it's only a few weeks old, why don't you take it back for a refund?
