  1. Thanks Si - I have considered approaching Lakland themselves... we're just getting crucified here in the UK with anything considered "musical" by the mail services or whoever is in charge of fleecing the public (tongue in cheek... sorta, kinda)
  2. I had to giggle at one point - James LaBrie is chatting with the audience and Myung is playing scales, or whatever - fingers flying. Man, he does not stop!
  3. Hi all Who in the UK sells those Lakland style control knobs? I can't find them anywhere My thanks Julian Images are of a Lakland bass, and a knob from bestbassgear(dot)com
  4. Just saw this thread ... I was at the 23rd April show at the Evo Arena (Wembley, London)... Myung is a machine. Absolutely sensational. And I was so glad to hear his true bass tone shining through and not the (my opinion only please, before I get lambasted for being a tone Nazi) progressively more and more distorted mess I've heard from live recordings over the last decade or so. His tone was so present and really made the bottom end move without woofing out. The band was so on point! Tesseract were just WOW! As tight as a very tight duck's derrière - pity I could hardly hear Amos because he is a monster player. But Myung... having grown up in South Africa, to actually get to see a band I've been a fan of since Awake was released... well... I'm not sure when then smile will leave my face hahahaha #ashdownforever
  5. Hi all I've had this Carl Martin for nearly 20 years.. and sadly it shows. The casing is beat to heck, and it's been shimmed down (to fit a long since gone incarnation of a board) It has had switch and the light removed - no need for either as it was always on. Also, there are no screws holding the bottom plate on. But cosmetics aside, it works splendidly, save the gain pot which seems to have lost some juice - as in, it is softer than expected, so you need to gain it up some. I finally took it off my board at the start of the year after scaling my pedals down to the absolute essentials. There really is not much to say other than this is a magic pedal - super clean and amazingly good compression, from gentle to shelved. Anyway - selling it for a song (price includes UK P&P) and hoping for someone who wants a great compressor without having to break the bank. Cosmetics can be remedied with another box and some soldering - the whole thing, and the power are easily moved about). Right - enough of me...
  6. Hahahaha touché @Owen That is a very good point. Now to get the covers to be a hair over a millimetre smaller to fit my bass's cavity
  7. Hi Tobie As I feared. It's the center to center that's the issue. Last set I tried didn't fit as a result. The pickup width is not so much an issue, but when it can't slot into the cavity because of the lugs... Thank you so much for taking the time to get the dimensions. What an absolute pity. Seriously miffed. Julian
  8. So you'd put up with the likes of Bartolini and Duncan? Perhaps just under?
  9. Hi all As the title suggests, anyone have any experience with Cat's Whiskers pickups? I'm looking at a possible set of J/MM to upgrade my Cort GB-75JH. Opinions most welcome. Ta Julian
  10. Could I please ask - cos the Bartolini site is not as informative as I'd perhaps like - for the following dimensions? Neck pickup – J style: L = xxx mm W = xx mm edge to middle of screw lug = xx mm center of screw lug to screw lug = xx mm My thanks in advance.. Julian
  11. Who knows... The Lakland are an unknown and pretty much there for me to see what they're like. The Bart eq is probably where I'll go though
  12. @spyder, thanks mate. Those are in my top 3 actually, along with a Seymour Duncan. The Glock is highly rated as a neutral pre, the Bart, I'm fairly familiar with, and I've had a few Duncan, and have always liked them. For a Jack-of-all-trades bass, the Glock may not be the best choice. A little colour, especially in the bottom end, is a bit more appealing to me. Hell's Teeth, this is not easy. I need to sit with these Laklands for a while and see if they "need" something....
  13. Anyone? Lakland pickups about to go in. 4 knobs. No switches/toggles, so no tapping or mid selector available other than a knob push/pull I would definitely prefer a 3-band to a 2-band, buuuuuuut open to the idea of the 2-band. 1st prize is a 4-band East.... But the idea of a sweepable mid is a huge draw (my old Ibanez BTBs basses spring to mibd) No rush to buy, just need something to aim for. Thank you in advance
  14. Hello all, So, I'm looking to fit a pair of Lakland pickups (jazz/humbucker config) into a Cort GB-75JH. Originally I'd say this would be fairly straightforward, but a. I'm a bit of a dunce where electronics are concerned and b. the following email from Brian at Lakland has me flummoxed. *** In our factory configuration, the MM pickup sends its red and black wires to the 3 way coil tap switch. FYI - please be aware both the neck and bridge pickup are humbuckers. There are 2 coils side by side in the neck and 4 (2 in front and 2 in back) in the bridge. The coil tap switch determines which of the 4 coils in the MM pickup are switched On at any given time. *** The attached PDF from Cort shows how the JJ version of this bass is wired (I can'#t find one for my bass sadly)... This image from Lakland shows their wiring. The Lakland J pickup has red and black wires, and the H pickup has those, as well as a green wire. I've included a few pictures of the cavity. It's nearly bundled and I struggled to get enough detail, but there is clearly no green wire. My understanding crashes here. Has anyone ever wired Lakland pickups before and/or knows enough to guide me here? My thanks in advance all. Julian... The pots from left to right: Volume, Blend, Bass, Treble GB75JJ.pdf
  15. I've owned an Aguilar Tone Hammer preamp pedal before and it was terrific. What worries me is trying, with my criticality limited knowledge of such things, is how to connect the dinky black box with the wires to the pots, and moreover, I'll need to get new pots to cater for the mid and stacked bass/treble config. Any takers for Bartolini?
  16. Great bass and rig. Damn, jealousy is setting in here...
  17. Ah, sorry, I didn't mention that. The bass has 4 holes. Most preamp manufacturers have 4 knob options thankfully. Sound is such a fluctuating issue for me. Inasmuch as I've always loved that dry-as-a-bone tone, a la Janek Gwizdala and Matt Garrison, I now only play in function bands, so it's more of the deep bottom, well rounded sound. Mike Porcaro with Toto, Pino with John Mayer, Lee Sklar with, well, just about everyone. I'm not a fan of the top end, I prefer the tone of a P to a J bass, but I do need the flexibility to favour the bridge vibe too. I'm perhaps asking for a bit much here 😂
  18. G'day all So, NBD (yesterday) for me, a Cort GB-75JH. I've got a set of Lakland JH pickups to bung in. My question, and this really is and all opinions welcome thing... without breaking the bank, which preamp is a good match? * I would love an East 4-band, but it's a lot of money sadly * I would prefer a preamp with a lot of bottom end oomph. Mids I can manage from my pedalboard preamp * 9v only as I don't fancy routing this bass * I've had a lot of experience with Seymour Duncan preamp, and they are undoubtedly wonderful, but will they be a match for the Lakland set? Anyway, my thanks in advance. No suggestion will be ignored 😊 Julian
  19. Man, if only I wasn't so flipping broke... I don't suppose you want to trade on a (pickup and EQ modded) Sterling Ray5, do you? This is one sweet looking bass @mrn1989
  20. One of those "darn, I wish I'd never sold that one" basses... huge sound from those Nords - and killer playability! GLFYS!!!!
  21. My ears are hurting and I wasn't even there!!!
  22. One of the biggest regrets of my G.A.S. was selling this exact model - which I had upgraded with a full USA Bartolini pipckup and preamp mod. I am so broke, else I'd be all over this one... man, I miss this bass
