The problem I usually find is that the wedding 'party' do not have the slightest clue what having wedding entertainment entails and why it costs the amount it does. (OK, so i have seen the odd band take the pee too) but, lets take an average 5 piece band as an example. Personally as a professional musician, I set a base-line hourly rate. This takes in to account industry rates and that I am self-employed. (I don't get holiday pay, have to pay NI, tax etc etc etc). Next up, there's the costs involved, be it PA, lights, fuel, sustenance and all the other stuff that needs covering like insurance and travel. The wedding party are expecting a quality experience, so lets not forget outfits too. It sounds silly, but it is still a cost. The really stickler for many a pro musician is when the wedding party ask you to arrive at 10am to set up, sound check and disappear until 8pm - ANd provide entertainment until the last drunkards leave at midnight. If I ask my plumber, electrician, gas man to set up his gear in the morning then come back later, i'd expect to get charged for it. It would stop them from doing any other work. Musicians apparently have nothing else to do with their life lol. Finally, once you have taken that in to account for each member, times the figure by 5 members and you have a rough cost. Any band doing a wedding gig for a few hundred quid is nuts - and to be honest, any wedding party expecting a band to play for 300 quid deserves the level of service that such a low price would deliver. There's more to it than that of course, but this should certainly be a starting point to costing out the entertainment for the couple's special day.

Ibanez EWB205WNE Acoustic Bass - electro 5 string. **Sold**

I'm not using flats, but for basses in Drop C or Drop C# I use Daddario's balanced medium set Nickels. The 120 gauge E string is perfect for the low strings with a tension similar to that of a standard tuned 105 I feel. Hope this helps!

I have a wonderful Ibanez EWB205WNE bass for sale that I have owned for a little while now. In all honesty, it has never gigged! I used it for one recording session last year and it rarely comes out for teaching as I usually teach with electric basses. I have my eye on something else so I'm letting this sweeeeeet bass leave the flock! It really is spotless and has new-ish strings on (Though you'll probably want to but your preferred ones on instead) I've included some stock pictures as mine would look exactly the same! - Well, ok so I'm not a pro-photographer though!! body shape EWB Body top Cordia Top back & sides Cordia Back & Sides neck Mahogany Neck pickup Fishman® Sonicore Pickup preamp Ibanez SRTc Preamp with Chorus & Onboard Tuner tuning machine Chrome Die-Cast Machineheads nut & saddles Ibanez Ivorex II™ Nut & Saddle bridge pins Black Plastic Bridge Pins strap button Ibanez Strap Button for Acoustic Guitars rosette Abalone Rosette bridge & fretboard Rosewood Bridge & Fretboard 34" Scale 5 strings Special Pearloid Fretboard Inlay Balanced XLR & 1/4" Outputs http://www.ibanez.co...d=3&series_id=9 - You'll want to try this bass out for sure! The lowest web prices I can find for this one is about £415 which is just nuts so I will see you happy at £360 for this superb bass!

I've had a chat with Scott at Gojira - he's really cool and I like his ideas. I've been meaning to drop a little design of my own over as he's up for taking a look at it.

"The only way, in my opinion, to get a great bass sound is to have a great-sounding bass player.... Oh and a great engineer who knows how to get a good bass sound in the mix. - Just a thought really. I can think of several occasions when I have listened to a track and thought the bass sound was nothing short of magical, but then been surprised at the sound when isolated. The bass player's execution didn't even sound that tight either, having been masked by the kick drum(s) for example. Beauty is in the eye of the be..umm.. cook who doesn't spoil the brew!

Ladies and Gentlemen! Here's a super bass for you. Especially nice for those either needing to travel light or having a bad back! Another on of Martin Peterson's creations down at Sei Bass in Camden. The instrument is in fine fettle - the only mark is as you can see on the body between the controls. Surprisingly, despite being a light bass it has a fat sound that is resonant and lively. I'd expect a new set of strings would also help. - This bass has been used so little that it's actually the original set of strings on the bass from purchase by my friend. The bass features a pair of Sei selected Kent Armstrong soapbar pickups and an standard EQ circuit. 34" Scale. 38mm nut with zero fret. 19mm string spacing at the bridge. Maple Neck. Ash body with Maple facing. The Bass is approximately ten years old - but doesn't look like it has done any more than ten weeks hard labour ha!! The bass comes with a padded case. I'll weigh the bass later on and dig out the spec too for you all! Price, considering the dink and need for new strings is a very very cool £1000 for a quick sale. New price being around £1600 I understand. No Shipping due to value of the instrument.

Somehow, one of my basses will be getting an MM pickup! I feel inspired!! Would love to hear some sound clips of the combinations if you're up for it? -
Just an update for those who may be interested. I bought a Novation Launchkey 49! I'm really pleased with it! A superb deck action and, it plugs directly in to my iPad for mobile tuneage!

Zoom B3 new firmware is available. Only minor updates.
Dood replied to dave_bass5's topic in Effects
Zoom still need an input gain control for both the B3 and MS. I appreciate it might not be something possible with a software update, but my basses are able to clip both unless I sue some sort of attenuator in my signal path. Thankfully, by coincidence I do have pedals before them to pull the signal back a bit. I feel sure a menu item could be added to set the input levels to the devices. -
I've been looking at both the Axiom and the Novation Launchkey. I like the Launchkey as it promises integration with my iPad without the need for external devices such as powered hubs to make it work - but I'm not so sure about the pads on it. Are they really flimsy? They look it! The Axiom seems to be better built AND I like that it has both USB Midi and standard MIDI sockets. It's be amazing if it worked directly with an iPad too. Anyone know about the LaunchKey?
We never rely on one type of gig, we're always thinking of the next new or interesting thing we can do.
Is how you make a living from being a musician. To specialise is almost business suicide, unless you're an a-lister. I as a musician have about 5 different 'main jobs' that I do per week, so if one dries up I still have the other 4 to keep me going until something else fills the slot. Being 'just a session musician' is too risky!

Check out the Delano Hybrid pickup too, it covers both the MM sound and J sound when placed in the bridge position of a bass (or neck position come to think of it!) I like the idea and certainly since playing a Sandberg VM the other day, I've become quite attached to the idea of a P/MM bass as the sound was superb when both pups were mixed. I'll be seeing what bass I want to drop an MM pickup in to soon! Thanks for the pictures, just makes me wanna do a custom even more now! -
Hey Peter, well, they are two different beasts! They share so much but I guess you have to look at them both differently. The B3 allows you access to three stomp boxes/sims at a time that you can access very quickly along with the drum machine, looper and tuner. The MS is for thise with less pedal board space, obviously. The MS uses a different method for switching through patches as I've explained in the video that could be preferable to that of the MS. I've had both for a while now and it's actually fun having both on one pedal board - but, i think I might take the B3 off and use for smaller dep gigs but keep the MS on my main board. i cant really tell you which I prefer to be honest - the B3 is brilliant as it is crammed with so much - the looper, drum machine, recording interface/sound card and extra effects over the MS makes it feature rich so wins in that respect, but... The MS is just brilliant. Getting all of those effects in a single pedal space must be a feat of engineering. Yes there's one or two things I would have liked in my 'dream version' of the pedal but I don't think they'd have any more room for a MIDI socket! To sum up, I'd say if you don't like messing with key presses and want to keep things simple, then the B3 will be the easiest to access sets of three pedals. However, if you are after either a single stompbox effect at a time, or want to be able to switch on or off a whole chain at a time with one button press, the MS is superb. (Ideal if you want a distorted synth sound with EQ and chorus on for a section of a song! Deeper Underground maybe?)
