I owned an Aria SB Special II, which I bought new in about 1984 for £279 - an amount I have never topped in respect of 'multiple of weekly income for an instrument'. In a fit of madness, and financial need, I px'ed it for a Marshall Valvestate - having crossed to the dark side temporarily, and picked up the six stringed instrument - and I've regretted it ever since. I don't know if yours was the same, but it had 2 humbuckers - a three way switch, and concentric volume and tones on the same controls. Mine was black and very sexy. Really fast player with a nice tone and low action - you could really dig in. The foolishness of youth! A
MB1. Hello Admiral if you go to the bass porn section and put in "Aria Basses" theres 2 pics of my old SB on there! Not really porn but older than some Basschatters!
I was seriously interested in this, but it was 'on hold' at the time. Ended up buying a Trace 300w 12 band 2x10 combo which I'm very happy with. Good luck with the sale.
MB1. Did you have that Trace when i delivered your Yamaha BB? BUMP! -
LOL Realised that, although I loved having it, I prefer to play a Precision (or even a Jazz ) when I play with the band. I guess I realised I was keeping the 'ray out of ego/sentiment as opposed to practicality. I keep saying it but I just prefer passive instruments (and I must remind myself of that when I consider buying another active). It's certainly not an easy bass to get rid of in that it's probably the best vintage bass I've owned, in terms of contruction it's in a league of it's own and the sound is a significant step above EB 'rays. There's also something about the fingerboard that I can't quite put my finger on (ironically), but it's the best I've ever played. I have to admit I was seriously thinking of putting in a passive PUP but am facing the fact that, if it's a Precision sound I'm after, I should just play a Precision . I'm only a 60 minute drive away if you want to try it...... All the best for Xmas Nik Chris
MB1. "Seriously thinking about putting in a passive pickup?" In a Pre EB Stingray????.....Kennedy was assasinated for less!
Hi all, Would just like to say thanks to everyone who took the time to PM me - I've answered everyone who sent one. To be honest, I didn't actually think anyone would buy the amp & would be destined to be forgotten. Many thanks to Hamster for meeting up today & collecting. Cheers, iamthewalrus
MB1. ....
Mind you, seeing as it was done pre-1978 it would have been quite a trick to do that to a '95. As a non-Fender sort of person, I have to say that's rather nicely done. I've seen vaguely similar modern custom basses by very expensive designers that were less attractive but cost a helluva lot more. As someone prone to neck/back problems if I sling a plank round there for too long, anything that reduces the weight of a P is welcome. Finally, don't forget that - when the original owner did this - he was modifying a very common, inexpensive bass. 20/20 hindsight is all very well, but calling him a "moron" for doing this is a tad unfair.
MB1. Previous owner.... Gordon???
