Of course you do know that you share your band name with Japan's Thee Michelle Gun Elephant.
Haha that's quality! Lucky they mispronounced it then
What's your 5th pot do? There were so many options from; effects, a simple Master Vol, treble booster, phase invertor.
It's a mono/stereo blend pot. Birch wiring is always a surprise haha! Also there's 2 micro switches for phasing
Excellent new topic, good to see some pics of your Birchenbacker - and as a Damned fan from way back, I heartily approve of your new band's name! Jon.
Cheers dude, our drummer is a huge fan of The Damned so I chose the name much to his delight
Can't let you see it because I moved it years ago - EB3 style bass - black, maple through neck, Grover/Schaller small tuners, hyperflux pickups, stainless 3? 2? point bridge, I think it had a full size plastic belt rash plate on back. Really well made. Took it back to JB himself in Bromsgrove circa 1980/81 and had it refurbished at a very good price. Only downside - short scale. Wonder where it is now. another one I wish I had kept.
Sounds beautiful. Pickup wise mine has Magnums like Tony Iommi had in his SG! Personally short scale is a plus side for me, then again I do have small hands

After quite a spate of John Birch related activity I decided we should put a thread together. To kick things off my 1973 short scale Rickenfaker, found on ebay as an 'under the bed' job. Original owner from new, original case, original strap and original stereo cable. Myself and John Carling, who was very impressed with the condition of the bass As featured in the photoshoot for my new band, Machinegun Etiquette. It'll be used in the studio for our forthcoming EP. Let's see your John Birch gear!
I bought the John Birch above from Ebay and contacted John Carling at John Birch guitars - a very nice chap by the way - the seller - a very helpful gent - had owned it for 33 years and the finish is original, John told me that the knobs are original too, I removed the stickers and they are similar to Ric knobs with a silver cap. The bass has a serial number under the back plate. It weighs around 8.5lbs and plays like a dream straight out of the box. I agree with Jon that the build quality is sublime and playability to my tastes is superior to any Rick or Faker I've ever played (I've had quite a few of both). So yes I'm very pleased with it!
Congratulations Ash and welcome to the John Birch owners club! John Carling is a very nice guy, when I get home I'll upload a picture of myself (with my bass) and JC. Maybe we should start a John Birch owners thread or something?
LOL, thanks guys. Really weird how I was thinking Billy Gibbons when i first saw it........
He has been known to play one. I'd love one of those but man it's pricey!
Awww, don't say that. It's just that the band I used it with are a little quiet at the mo, it'll pick up again. It's a weird sounding thing, probably not what you expect. Bit odd to play as well but loads of character.
Give it a good airing dude haha, it's far too nice not to play! That said I do have my John Birch and that's a fine bit of Rickenfakery, but it's far too mint condition to even consider gigging.
Haha, it's a shame it doesn't get used more nowadays to be honest but it's kinda my most 'different' sounding and playing bass so is unlikely to ever go anywhere I'm afraid.
That's a shame, I was going to bid on the original auction but my computer decided to overheat and die on me. Over the years I've come to the conclusion that Ricks are my preference and that GS really suits me. Shame because it would become my 'go to' bass for practically everything.
Just waiting for some pictures and I'm almost definitely gonna have this. Can't imagine it not being for keeps either I'm afraid Rob. Unlike yourself I don't tend to part with many basses, particularly not all black, vintage US made beauties.
What about parting with the all black vintage British Rickenfaker?

I'll add some pics of my John Birch to the forum soon. I have some from my new band's photoshoot, currently waiting to get the pics back

Saturday evening? Coming in after a few pints and over egging the cake... perhaps?

Nice John Birch that, very Lemmy! Can tell you for a fact that it's been stripped of the original finish due to the lack of headstock logo, also the knobs have been changed along with the truss rod cover. If anybodies tempted don't hesitate! Best bass I've ever owned, fact.
