  1. just try clear laquer, but before you do, get a similar piece of scrap plastic, scribble your signature on it, let it dry then try the laquer over it, if it doesnt react with the perm marker you should be fine and you can then do the autographed plate. Before i try anything new i always try it on scrap first, just in case, a very bad experience in the past with a project i was working on, i ended up stripping the whole body down again and it was a nightmare.
  2. Mark king is a awesome bass player but slap is just not my thing, i do enjoy listening to him every now and again and i do own a couple of level 42 albums only because an ex girlfriend of mine from many moons ago was level 42 mad and i think the albums i have are probably hers
  3. cheers mate nice one, i"ll try and get it up to my uncles over the weekend, i"ll let you know how i get on. Thanks again. I love this site more than my wife.
  4. cheers for the info, would it be possible put a tuner on the bottonm edge like the actual stingrays.
  5. yeah i was thinking about that as well, i"ll see what a few more people say then get it done next week sometime.
  6. hi people. I have a johnson stingray copy and i hate ( and i mean hate ) the shape of the headstock, its the ugliest thing i"ve ever seen, i was wondering if i could have it reshaped to the more tradditional shape without weakening the headstock itself, my uncle is a joiner with 40 years experience behind him so could do the job no problem, if it can be done successfully then i would keep hold of the guitar and have it upgraded with better pickups etc. any advice would be greatly appreciated. I"ve added a photo of the headstock to show you the shape.
  7. My x wife once said to me that i was a simple man with simple tastes and she was spot on. Theres nowt wrong with my mex precision, it plays fine and looks fine, although i would like to change the neck to a maple fretboard as i love them but cant see me doing anything to it in the near future
  8. BLOOD ON THE WORLDS HANDS by iron maiden. I saw steve harris do it live on a twin necked bass on the x-factor tour in the 90s although i wasn"t playing bass then but a few months ago got the tab for it and had a bash at it ( no chance ) it looks easy tabbed out but its the speed its played at that freaks me out, i will keep attempting it though regardless of how long it takes.
  9. welcome, i was 38 when i started learning and that was only a year ago, i love it and have just started jamming with a couple of guitarists i met not so long ago, i make loads of mistakes but thats what its all about, practice, practice, practice. At the mo i"m learning some beatles and sting basslines.
  10. welcome mate, you should find whatever you want on here, nice to have you aboard
  11. i have a carlsbro kickstart 30w and they sound really nice for a practice amp there not exactly tiny but nice little amps, 10in speaker which sound quite clear and you can pick em up off ebay now for about 50/60 quid, well worth a look. i "ll be upgrading soon but i"m keeping the amp as i really like em.
  12. cheers mate, much appreciated, a mate of mine is an electrician so i"ll ask him. thanks again. Ash.
  13. A band without a bass player is like a fire without heat, POINTLESS.
  14. i"ve just been given some pickups (pj configuration ) but theres no wires coming from them and seeing as im thick as a brick when it comes to electrics i was wondering what sort of wire would i use to get them up and running and where would i get it, is it special wire or will any electrical shop be able to sort me out with some. The bloke who i got em off said they came out of some crappy 80s bass but they work fine, want to try em in a project i"m in the middle of doing, i have the wiring diagrams to connect em to the pots etc just dont know which wire to use.
  15. i personally cant get along with stingray style basses, i just dont like where the pickups are situated, to far back for my liking, i bought one last year when i first started learning and at first it was ok but i soon got p**sed off with it, i still have it but it doesnt get used anymore, i much prefer precision style basses. i would personally go with the modified jazz as i nearly bought one a few weeks ago but ended up with a mex precision. Its up to you really, just go with what feels right for you, try something different, you never know you might like it.
  16. just the box standard vol and tone control and the pickup is the johnson brand humbucker, the writing says johnson by axel, and yeah it is passive, nothing spectacular as i bought it last year when i first started learning, sounds nice though.
  17. I have a johnson stingray copy up for grabs in near mint condition, maple neck and fretboard, alder body, clover leaf style tuners etc etc ( you know the sort ). Theres a tiny (and i mean tiny) crack in the laquer on the underside of the body that i"ve only just noticed and i"ve had the bass 12 months, sounds really nice, you get bright ringing tones from this and the strings look brand new as its hardly been used, comes with padded gig bag (nothing special but it does the job). i"ve sprayed the scratchplate blue as i think it looks better but you can pick em up for next to nothing if you like the black ones. Ideally i would like to swap it for a precision style bass as the stingray style doesn"t suit me at all. As i"m skint at present, if it could be collected then great but if your not to far away maybe we could meet half way.
  18. like the burpster said dont expect it to play like a classic because thats never gonna happen. To be honest if you just want it for lying around dont spend to much money on it and if you really like it then upgrade the pickups and bridge then at least you will have something that sounds half decent, i wont upgrade mine as a reasonably priced set of pickups and bridge would cost more than the guitar, i would rather spend the money on my mex precision or get a bigger amp. THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
  19. theres loads of cheap and cheerful basses out there, i paid 43 quid for one that sounds really nice but the finish leaves a lot to be desired on it and it has a fair bit of fret buzz, not a problem, just set it up to your own requirements and that should eliminate some of the problems, which is what i did with mine, mine lives on its stand in the living room and is picked up everysingle day, i"ve sprayed the headstock 2 different colours and the pickguard to match and it looks weird ( hell,it was only 43 quid) if it packed up tomorrow i wouldnt care, but its great to have around just to learn scales on or write bass lines.
  20. cheers guys for the advice, i"m only using a crappy little 30w amp at the moment but i feel its time to move on to a bigger amp, the 30w is fine for the house but i"ve got friendly with a couple of guitarists who have invited me to go jamming with them and as i"ve not been playing long i need all the experience i can get so the ashdown amps sound just the ticket.
  21. As anyone had any experience with the ashdown EB 180 bass combo as i"m seriously considering buying one as an upgrade from my practice amp. I may go with the 12in speaker or the 15in, any thoughts people, would appreciate the advice.
  22. welcome sarah you have some fine basses there,i play with my fingers but keep saying i"ll try the pick but never seem to get round to it.
  23. not sure about the colours your best bet is ringing them up and asking, i know they do a candy apple red but thats on the deluxe active model and there about £588 which is a fair bit dearer than the standard model, i quite like the artic white jazzbut then its you thats buying it, not me. keep us posted to what you eventually buy. you cant go wrong with reidys.
  24. I"m a sucker for second hand basses and i also love peavey basses, my first bass was a peavey milestone 1 which i wish i would have kept but sold it as it never got used, not because i didn"t like it because i was working every hour god sends at the time. If a bass feels right for you, regardless of cost and it makes the sound you want then go for it, i own a crappy precision copy which i love and it sounds brilliant, i can get sounds from it i cant get from my fender precision so i wont be getting rid of it in a hurry ( i would be lucky to get 20 quid for it on ebay) plus i dont mind if it gets knocked about. Of course we all would love to be able to afford at least one decent bass and i suspect all of us will own that one bass at some point in our bass playing lives but until then just play with what you have got and what you can afford. ANY BASS IS BETTER THAN NO BASS AT ALL.
  25. This is what it looks like now with the wine red plate ( much better in my opinion )
