  1. i"ve just been given some pickups (pj configuration ) but theres no wires coming from them and seeing as im thick as a brick when it comes to electrics i was wondering what sort of wire would i use to get them up and running and where would i get it, is it special wire or will any electrical shop be able to sort me out with some. The bloke who i got em off said they came out of some crappy 80s bass but they work fine, want to try em in a project i"m in the middle of doing, i have the wiring diagrams to connect em to the pots etc just dont know which wire to use.
  2. i personally cant get along with stingray style basses, i just dont like where the pickups are situated, to far back for my liking, i bought one last year when i first started learning and at first it was ok but i soon got p**sed off with it, i still have it but it doesnt get used anymore, i much prefer precision style basses. i would personally go with the modified jazz as i nearly bought one a few weeks ago but ended up with a mex precision. Its up to you really, just go with what feels right for you, try something different, you never know you might like it.
  3. just the box standard vol and tone control and the pickup is the johnson brand humbucker, the writing says johnson by axel, and yeah it is passive, nothing spectacular as i bought it last year when i first started learning, sounds nice though.
  4. I have a johnson stingray copy up for grabs in near mint condition, maple neck and fretboard, alder body, clover leaf style tuners etc etc ( you know the sort ). Theres a tiny (and i mean tiny) crack in the laquer on the underside of the body that i"ve only just noticed and i"ve had the bass 12 months, sounds really nice, you get bright ringing tones from this and the strings look brand new as its hardly been used, comes with padded gig bag (nothing special but it does the job). i"ve sprayed the scratchplate blue as i think it looks better but you can pick em up for next to nothing if you like the black ones. Ideally i would like to swap it for a precision style bass as the stingray style doesn"t suit me at all. As i"m skint at present, if it could be collected then great but if your not to far away maybe we could meet half way.
  5. like the burpster said dont expect it to play like a classic because thats never gonna happen. To be honest if you just want it for lying around dont spend to much money on it and if you really like it then upgrade the pickups and bridge then at least you will have something that sounds half decent, i wont upgrade mine as a reasonably priced set of pickups and bridge would cost more than the guitar, i would rather spend the money on my mex precision or get a bigger amp. THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
  6. theres loads of cheap and cheerful basses out there, i paid 43 quid for one that sounds really nice but the finish leaves a lot to be desired on it and it has a fair bit of fret buzz, not a problem, just set it up to your own requirements and that should eliminate some of the problems, which is what i did with mine, mine lives on its stand in the living room and is picked up everysingle day, i"ve sprayed the headstock 2 different colours and the pickguard to match and it looks weird ( hell,it was only 43 quid) if it packed up tomorrow i wouldnt care, but its great to have around just to learn scales on or write bass lines.
  7. cheers guys for the advice, i"m only using a crappy little 30w amp at the moment but i feel its time to move on to a bigger amp, the 30w is fine for the house but i"ve got friendly with a couple of guitarists who have invited me to go jamming with them and as i"ve not been playing long i need all the experience i can get so the ashdown amps sound just the ticket.
  8. As anyone had any experience with the ashdown EB 180 bass combo as i"m seriously considering buying one as an upgrade from my practice amp. I may go with the 12in speaker or the 15in, any thoughts people, would appreciate the advice.
  9. welcome sarah you have some fine basses there,i play with my fingers but keep saying i"ll try the pick but never seem to get round to it.
  10. not sure about the colours your best bet is ringing them up and asking, i know they do a candy apple red but thats on the deluxe active model and there about £588 which is a fair bit dearer than the standard model, i quite like the artic white jazzbut then its you thats buying it, not me. keep us posted to what you eventually buy. you cant go wrong with reidys.
  11. I"m a sucker for second hand basses and i also love peavey basses, my first bass was a peavey milestone 1 which i wish i would have kept but sold it as it never got used, not because i didn"t like it because i was working every hour god sends at the time. If a bass feels right for you, regardless of cost and it makes the sound you want then go for it, i own a crappy precision copy which i love and it sounds brilliant, i can get sounds from it i cant get from my fender precision so i wont be getting rid of it in a hurry ( i would be lucky to get 20 quid for it on ebay) plus i dont mind if it gets knocked about. Of course we all would love to be able to afford at least one decent bass and i suspect all of us will own that one bass at some point in our bass playing lives but until then just play with what you have got and what you can afford. ANY BASS IS BETTER THAN NO BASS AT ALL.
  12. This is what it looks like now with the wine red plate ( much better in my opinion )
  13. This is my mex precision i bought from reidys, changed the scratchplate as i hate black or white ones
  14. Hi guys and gals, i"m thinking of upgrading my amp from a practice amp to a slightly bigger amp,any suggestions, dont need anything to big for now, something that would handle small gigs for the near future.
  15. The book i was on about earlier is called PROGRESSIVE BASS GUITAR BY Gary Turner and Brenton White, it goes through from beginner to advanced students and comes wth CD. Thanks to Kennyrodge for pointing out i had not mentioned it. cheers mate.
  16. I agree with thinman, reidys music in blackburn, i bought my MIM fender precision there and and the service was excellent throughout i paid 330 quid. sounds wicked to.
  17. teaching myself. I first picked up a bass about 6 years ago but due to work commitments and ever rising bills i sold it, took it back up again at the end of last summer and never put it down since, decided to teach myself coz i cant afford lessons ( hell, i can barely afford gas and electric )bought a few books but keep going back to the same book as its a brilliant book for learners, still cant get my head around the notation side of it but its coming and i will suss it eventually. Just started going jamming with a couple of guitarists which is helping a great deal. FORGOT DRUMS, FORGET GUITAR, PLAY THE BASS ITS THE ONLY WAY
  18. i"ve just had a similar one off ebay when i sold my car, the bad thing about em though is theres always somebody who will fall for it hook line and sinker and be a few grand out of pocket. really p***es me off
  19. good on you mate, stick to your guns and take your buisness elsewhere. Theres a local shop near me i wouldnt go near and its 10 mins walk from my house, my mate bought is epiphone SG and laney combo from there years ago and said the service was lousy. I"ve just bought my mex precision from a shop 30 miles away from my house because they couldnt do enough for me, they even phoned me when i was on the train to ask me if i needed directions to the shop, needless to say if i buy another bass i will buy it from this shop,no hesitations whatsoever and it cost me 11 quid to get there.
  20. I cant speak for everybody but geezer butler on the early sabbath recordings (deep, loud and awesome to boot). Since starting to learn last year i listen to any bass player really and not just rock but i always go back to rock, funk is really good as well and i"m trying to get my head around the bassline to I WANT YOU BACK by the jackson 5 which i think is brilliant.
  21. i agree, i"m a learner myself and i"m struggling on certain basslines but i"m enjoying it and loving learning it.
  22. The pedal board looks amazing by the way. Buzz i agree with you `100% you will always get snotty bastards regarding basses, personally if your bass plays nice then you should be happy with it,regardless of its price. I have a really cheap precision copy ( and i mean cheap ) and it sounds excellent, its not a patch on my fender but it sounds really nice for he price.
  23. This is a bit of a taboo subject but is there anyone out there ( you know who you are ) who are snobs when it comes to bass guitars. Which basses would you buy or which ones would you avoid, and why.
  24. i take it denmark street is not a favourite with a lot of people on here but to be honest i cant be arsed with shops that are only interested in taking your money and not interested in your needs. I bought my first bass last year from a local shop and the fella was brilliant,he let me try as many basses as i wanted through as many amps as i could and offered loads of advice, needless to say i"ve bought stuff from his shop since. The same goes for the shop where i bought my mex precision a few weeks ago, the staff were brilliant (and she was quite tasty as well) i actually did a 60 mile round trip to get to this shop because they were that good (Reidys music in blackburn) and they were cheap as well. If your after a decent guitar or bass then dont think twice about travelling to the area because its worth it, regardless of distance.
  25. cheers mate thats exactly what i"m looking for. much appreciated.
