BUZZ. Interesting you should mention you had a guitarist who couldnt play, as i recall we had one as well, we already had the line up but he wanted to join and he was a mate so we told him to go and buy a guitar (it helps) he turned up at rehersals with an Ibanez flying v, a really nice guitar if i remember rightly but it just didn"t fit in with the style we were playing and after an hour he got bored and decided to leave the band(no patience, thought he could sound like schenker in an hour) yeah right.

As the title says. I"m seriously thinking of getting a fretless but dont want to spend a shedload of money in case i dont like it. Any recomendations for a cheap and cheerful fretless, i "ve just defretted an old bass neck i had and i might try it on the project im doing but god knows when its gonna be finished.

yeah i agree, i"m a big fan of lemmys as well, i think i"ve got space ritual on my player somewhere.

Does the sound of your bass make you go, "OH YES!"?

It most certainly does, everytime i pick the damn thing up. I went jamming this morning and being a beginner sometimes get frustrated, missed notes etc etc but the better i get the better it sounds and this morning it sounded awesome. -
Im sat here listening to Sabbath on my mp4 player (better than watching britains got talent) and wondering who everyone thinks is the best rock/metal bassist. I"m expecting a lot of diversity and probably names i"ve never even heard off but it should be interesting (no arguments guys this is a bit of fun). My personal fave has to be "Geezer Butler"

I think the rest of the guys have covered all the basses but not many have mentioned an amp. I started learning myself about a year ago (im 39 so an oldie to learning really) and i bought a carlsbro kickstart 30w, you can pick em up brand new off ebay for around 60 quid and their decent little amps, they have the 10 in speaker as appossed to 8 in (sometimes smaller) that usually come with practice amps, audio in socket so you can jam along to your fave tracks and a host of other features. At the end of the day its up to you but the amp is worth looking into, im upgrading my amp soon but im keeping the 30w because its such a great little amp.

Everyone must remember the first band they joined. Mine was with 3 guys at school, we were a 4 piece that played punk/rock, i ended up as the singer as i coudn"t afford an instrument at the time, we practiced solidly for about 8 months, 3 nights a week and became quite good, then our teacher got us a gig at the local youth club, our set list was "sex pistols" "deep purple and black sabbath, thats all we ever learned which is why the guitarist and me left coz we were sick off sex pistols, we did 3 gigs and on the last gig i fell into the drumkit after drinking way to much old english cider Thats rock n roll i guess. HAPPY DAYS. The band was called GODS TEETH. and it was way back in 84/85

My very first bass which was a peavey milestone 1, it certainly wouldn"t have had fender shaking in their boots but it was my first and i regetted selling it an hour after i let it go (bills needed to be paid) you all know the score. I also had a laney session reverb 60 w guitar amp which was ok but it packed up on me so off it went to the tip, in a strange way i miss that amp.

I say go for it, like you said its an adventure and its all free plus rallys are usually a laugh and you never know where it will lead from there. Throw caution to the wind and have a laugh, your obviously good enough to do it so why not. -
cheers for the info guys. much appreciated. I know the anniversary models are more expensive than the standard ones .
-
cheers for the info karl, if i remember rightly i read somewhere on here that the jap pickguards are slightly different to the mex and usa ones, dont know if its true or not. I will email them and find out cheers mick

I bought a standard mex precision a few weeks ago and it has the 60th anniversary meddalion on the back of the headstock, did fender put these on all their models for that year or just the anniversary editions, my serial number dates it to an 05/06 model (MZ5). It also has a stamp on the underside of the pickguard which reads feb 06. cheers mick

As anyone bought a precision pickguard from the ebay seller"Drumdiscounter" as im after one for my mex precision but just wondered if they fitted without having to drill more holes in the body to accomadate it. cheers. mick.

The original and still the best in my opinion. I wouldnt play anything else, it can be a copy, the real deal, i just dont care as long as its a precision style bass, i own a precision copy and a mex fender precision. Theres just something about them that i love.

Is your squire the affinity or standard model, im quite new to bass playing myself (about 1 year ) as the standard squires are slightly better quality than the affinty series, ive never owned a squire bass so i cant really comment but everybody will say different things, some good some bad, personally i"ve heard the standard squire series are decent basses and are quite easy to upgrade, i upgraded my beginner bass a few weeks ago to a mex fender precision and im very impressed with it and its fairly cheap as well for a fender. If i were you i would stick with the squire for the time being until you feel your ready to upgrade to a better quality bass. you dont need to go to fender as theres loads of excellent brands out there, i chose fender because i like the precision sound. good luck with the learning, you will find loads of info on here, if you cant find what your looking for on here then its not worth knowing about. better to own a squire than a no name knock off, but even no name knock offs can surprise people.

How ya doing john, i just started learning bass last year, a bit late in life (39) but what the hell, its fun, im also in wigan so if you fancy a natter email me, im teaching myself but i have a couple of dvds you might find interesting, if you want a copy of them, let me know. cheers mick.

Ask your local guitar tech to knock you one up, it shouldn"t cost to much or like someone else said try making your own, buy the material and take it to a joiner or someone similar who can cut it to size for you. I made one about 20 years ago from a security sign i pinched off a fence ( i was young and daft then ) and it came out fine, if you can afford it though goet tit done proper so the bass looks the business.
-
I would be lost without mine, if it broke today would commit suicide, its a brilliant piece of kit, i bought it years ago when i first started learning then i packed up altogether but kept the tuner, its only a crappy little seiko thing but the 9v battereies last forever and ever, when the battery does die i just rob one out of the smoke alarm ( bad move i know) and when i started up again last year i"ve used it everyday since. I LOVE IT MORE THAN THE WIFE (JUST DONT TELL HER)

Even to my untrained ears, i would say you definately hear the difference in certain woods. I have a precision copy made from ply and it sounds ok but heavy as hell, i also have a mex precision thats alder and it sounds really nice with tons of sustain (rings forever ) another of my basses is a stingray copy thats also alder and sounds different again. so to sum it up i dont think i would care what wood my basses were made out of as long as they made the sound i want.
-
I"ve seen a couple of nice sx basses and they look nice although i"ve never tried one but personally i dont think i would sell my mex precision as i"m a sucker for a precision bass but thats just my opinion, each to their own. Go for it, you have nothing to lose amd if you dont like it then trade it in for a better bass.
-
if you do then let me know what they sound like and i might just go and have a bash myself, my local guitar shop is a waste of space so i travel to one a few miles away, dont fancy going there to find out the bass is crap

love the colour scheme, looks kinda cool.

A friend of mine down south has just bought one of the spear gladius 6 string electric and hes pretty impressed by it, so impressed that he sold his gibson sg to fund it. I believe their a new company founded in 2006/2007 (not exactly sure to be be honest) and their getting decent reveiws in the guitar mags, i agree with you their pretty decent looking but have no idea what they sound like, but with any new company i think it will take a while to convince people that their the real deal if they want to compete against the main companys like fender, warwick, ibanez etc etc. I just may try one myself but i have yet to be convinced, knock yourself out and try one, apparently the company will send out any guitar or bass to the shop of your choice so you can give them a try and your under no obligation, sounds pretty decent of the company to me, thats how confident they are about their products.

my girlfriend asked me last year to teach her electric guitar and seeing as i only know 3 chords it didn"t go down to well and she gave up within half an hour and has never picked one up since. She fancys herself as a keyboard player but when i bought her one she hardley used it and said she was to busy ( it wasn"t with housework, thats for sure ). getting back to the bass though, she doesn"t grumble at all, just lets me get on with it, i"ve just started going jamming and shes not bothered about that either so i should think myself lucky really.

MB1 Youv"e certainly got me sussed, ok i admit they are mine but i only listen to em every now and again.
