1.
I don't have any ideas myself, but I thought I'd say that's a delightful font.
Comic Sans MS..
2. I'd prefer to keep the on stage bass sound narrow, to stop "volume inflation" from the rest of the band. I've noticed that when I use my GK stacked as opposed to just the combo on it's own, the sound spreads over a much wider field.
3.
I didn't realise that! Thanks (and no I don't mind the digression )
Some of the silk winding comes over the nut. There's been a few posts about it.
4. Bear in mind that the Stagg scale is longer than standard, so check the new strings playing length.
5. I used to play masses of gigs on the D/B, it dropped down to almost nothing. Since then I've sold it, kept the Stagg and now keep busy on the trombone; how strange is that...
6. This post has some info about mod's and fixing the "rattle". http://basschat.co.uk/topic/6749-stagg/
7. What about mixing the magnetic PU with piezo one, and maybe try experimenting with phase changing etc? There's another Mag video on this page.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXt6BE2Qk9Q
8. I've found an elegant way to fix the "STAGG RATTLE".. Take 6" or so* of gardeners tying wire, fold it in half, push the spike all the way in and then insert the wires down inside the receiver leaving an inch or so spare. Gaffa tape the spare bit to the screening, works like a charm! BobM. * Your 6" may vary..
9.
27 piece sax ensemble!! Eww!... Is that a flock or a gaggle??
Neither, it's Staxaphones..
10. I've owned a D/B for a long time, and now play a Stagg, (upgraded) and if I were starting out again, I'd buy a KK Baby bass and stick some Piezo's on it..
11. I read somewhere that "Innovation" will make a longer string on request?
12.
Bought a double bass from Bob Martin,Very happy with the bass, the photos and description were accurate and Bob was easy to deal with Happy buyer! Jim Rintoul
Thanks JIm!
13. Double Bass 3/4 Hungarian student model. Ply sides carved top 1950's. Inc very thick soft zipped cover. Top quality ebony fingerboard cut to 2 octaves. Work carried out by John Sydenham. Low bridge profile set up for finger style, not suitable for bowing, string height is on the high side at the moment. Shadow SH 950 pickups. With 3 sets of strings, Honeys, Spirocores, and Helicores. It won't win any beauty pageants, with a rough repair to the body side, and the purling is in very poor condition. It has a good even acoustic sound through the registers, and works well with an amp, with many compliments about the tone. It's been played professionally for many years on jazz gigs, functions and cruise ships. This is a bass for a student or a someone who wants an that sounds much better than it looks. It's a reliable stable instrument that's served me very well. Most of my work is on the trombone now, and the occasional D/B is played on a nicely set-up Stagg, therefore lack of use brings about the sale. Ashburton, South Devon. More pictures here. 14.
CAPTION?
"I am just going outside and may be some time."
15. I’m just getting ready for sale, a similar 3/4 Ply sides, solid top with a ebony neck Hungarian (with label) bass. It’s nowhere as pretty as the one in the photo, and I was hoping to get around £650 for it. Hmm...
16.
I presume its the Shadow 950? http://www.contrabas..._950_pickup.htm I just bought one from steviedee on BC this morning
I’ve had 2 of these and think that they have a bit more “meat” in the tone than the Underwoods. But, the jack socket fixing is very poor, so you’ll need to use a jubilee clip and a cable tie to get a solid connection on the tailpiece. Great sound though...
17.
OK, stupid question I know, but important to understand before I take a leap into Stagg World! Looking at pics, clearly the gig bag is much shorter than the bass. Does this mean that you have to separate the finger board from the body to use the gig bag and then reassemble and re-string at the gig? If so, sounds like a right faff. Anyone illuminate me?
No, it fits perfectly. You might want to make a disc of some kind to stop the end pin from damaging the end of the bag though. BobM.
18.
CAPTION?
I can’t think of a caption right now, but there’s a bit of a story here.. Maybe, something to do with basses and bicycles? BobM
19. This was on Talkbass.. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f101/stagg-eub-megathread-344951/index29.html#post14553429
20.
Working on the string set up at the moment and just putting the finishing touches to a new idea to raise the end block. The black curved end block that comes with the Stagg produces an asymmetric string angle at the bridge - it just means that there is an unwelcome tendency to pull the bridge backwards ...dont know if anyone has had a problem with that? So the current plan is to lift the strings higher at the end block and even out the angle of the string either side of the bridge so that the bridge is forced is directly down on the piezo wires. Hopefully will improve the sound and mean that the bridge stays put!
Hmm.. This might be the reason why the under string length is so long, to keep the angle of the strings over the bridge low? Bob.
21. Have you had a go a the nut yet? I’ve an ebony one fitted, taken down to the height of a credit card, a big improvement, and bought a battery charger and a pair of rechargeable PP3’s. Don’t trust the blue light for battery condition, they can suddenly run down on a long gig. Bob.
22. I was was thinking of a tailpiece mod, but was concerned that the the string angle would be too steep for the bridge. Good job, keep us posted. Bob.
23. I’m wondering if the wood has shrunk around the pickups, they seem to be a much tighter fit.
