The old 'one bass must go' dilemma, please help...!
Chiliwailer replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
No food on the table = lose weight, plus you keep basses. Win/win situation? I reckon if you want a Precision because of the classic tone, keep the one that gives you a classic tone and sell the other one.
I want it all Paul!!!!!!!! -
To be able to make any serious decision I think we need some pictures of the basses in question
Haha, good point Chris! Here is a link to the CS porn thread, it's on the October 11th post. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/245589-fender-custom-shop-gear-porn/ -
The old 'one bass must go' dilemma, please help...!
Chiliwailer replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
This makes sense if you can cope without the 55. How does the sound of the 55 compare with your 64 Precision and Jazz basses? Is the tone similar to the neck pick up on the Jazz, or more like the Precision? Or is it so different that you cannot get close with a J or split coil P bass?
Cheers. The 55 has something very special and unique, it can't be replicated on the Jazz or 64 P Bass. The way that bass fills the room is extraordinary, I love the way it alters the way I think about playing. Sad thing is, I hardly ever manage to get out and play anymore due to health issues, though if that ever changed I'd love a bass like the 55 to use sometimes in a band situation. For now, it's great for playing along to old records like Neil Young or Creedence. -

Cheers, there is some good logic in that. I'll seriously miss that huge sound, I guess that is what's making it a hard choice, glad I got some time to think this one through. Seriously though, I'd have kept my old Fender logo Squier bass if it hadn't been too heavy for me! I appreciate your thoughts -
From those pics it looks good and period correct. I'm pretty certain that back then Fender were still cutting up the regular headstock decals and using the 'Fender' part for lefties. Always good to get pics of the neck, pocket, pickup and pots etc when buying vintage. Given the condition of that one, I reckon it could all be good under the hood, but do check! Looks lovely.
Ha ha ha I know! Being redundant at the moment's making me put things into perspective. Didn't mean to sound quite so utilitarian! Alex
Sorry to hear that, know how it feels. But yeah, it does make scaling down more appealing, just perhaps not a Mex?! -
Sell them all and buy a Mex P. Financial hardship's no laughing matter. What's more important to you? Being able to put food on the table or "having the right tone, man"? Truckstop
Luckily my financial position isn't as extreme as your comment. -
Well... I love white basses me, so if you need to put your CS 64 out of harm's way for a while...
Cheers pal, buy frying pan and fire spring to mind....! -
Mrs Chiliwailer and I have been looking at bills and budgets for next year, it's looking quite likely that a bass may have to go. Shame, as I just bought a lovely new one recently and was feeling smug and contented with the current basses on my wall. I know for sure that my Modulus and Jazz Bass are going nowhere. Odd really as I'm mostly a Precision player, but they are killers and are very useful and hard to replace. If i sell my new CS 64 Precision then I'm going to be sore that I dont have that classic sound, and I'll be even more annoyed as this 64 is the nicest Fender Precision I've had in my hands for a seriously long time, and it's the first time I haven't missed my original 64 P Bass I sold a few years back. But it's white, and I'm still struggling to get my head around that, I never did get on with white basses. So this bass is surely substance over style for me. I could sell my CS 55 Precision, the bass that was proper love at first sight. It sounds HUGE, bigger than other passive Fenders I've owned, it's a monster and even better, it's only 7.5lbs in weight which is great as I have neck and back issues. Plus, it's black, ash and maple, mmmmm..... But, it's a killer sound that isn't going to be as useful as a classic Precision for me. Or, I could sell them both and buy a Mike Lull P Bass that is available. Super light weight, amazing tone and black! Could I turn this negative experience of possibly needing to sell a bass into a fun NBD experience that softens the blow? I like Lull basses but haven't played this particular one yet, plus I may not need to actually sell for a few months so it's all just a thought for now. One that needs a post like this for some friendly advice and thought provoking reading matter! Cheers!

Mate, that is stunning, nice one! The Dustys sure are great basses, but then so must be your new Jazz. Therefore, I reckon this won't be the last CS you buy.....

Dani bought a bass from me. He is friendly, reliable and very easy to deal with. Cheers!

Congrats! You've got some great tones covered there, they compliment each other nicely. Enjoy! -
Nice one, cheers for the link, look forward to watching this one...

Big love for TI's, have them on my Jazz and a Precision. Good move!

Yup, that baby used to be mine. I'm very happy for you to use the pics I took. There are some people who believe that 'as new' vintage basses were never played because they are not so good, they may be right on some basses, but this bass has an INCREDIBLE tone and is a real killer. It broke my heart to sell this bass, I had 2 66's and I kept the battered one, which by the way wasn't as good and later got sold on. If I didn't have to sell it, I never would have, but I needed the funds and the rest is history. Gutted I can't buy it back, but good luck with the sale!
Women, always falling for sparkley things! Did you get this in from US by any chance? As said, I saw one on evil bay a while back.
Yeah,. thats the one, my friend got this from eBay USA, it was close to $4000. Then literally about a week later he was offered a pair of Sunburst ones (his fave colour) which he snapped up, so I took the pink one immediately. Shame it has to go, but I needed a P Bass. not two Modulus
Lovely, and very very collectible , they aint making these anymore if memory serves me right , GLWS .
Absolutely. this is a rare one in the truest sense of the word! Cheers
Damn. I knew this was going to happen! Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Bro, this'll fit into your collection perfectly!
Bloody Hell! Totally tempted to add this to my '97 Flea. Cracking bass. I've seen one for sale on eBay US and that is it! Keeping the purple one instead mate, very tough decision I am sure.
Yes mate, it was a tough call to let this one go over the purple. The purple one is heavier and this one feels awesome so I should really be letting the purple go, but.... Mrs Chiliwailer and I have grown to love the purple flake vibe and I feel quite sentimental towards it!

**SOLD** NOW £1750, FINAL REDUCTION Recent purchases mean I can't justify having 2 of these anymore so this one is up for grabs, I bought it because it's a very rare colour (I heard that only 3 were made in Dead Head Pink) and because it is only 8.5lbs, these basses can weigh up to 10lbs....not great for bouncing around the stage.... It has a SD pickup, Aguilar preamp and badass 2 bridge. It's made in 2012 and has the original hard case. Simply put, these basses are amazing, Oh yeah... NO TRADES PLEASE!!!!! [u]EDIT: i've added some pics taken in daylight, the colour changes due to lighting. Amazing bass, what a great NBD! I love my 2 Modulus FB4's and would never be without one. But watch the for sale section, I may have to let one of them go very soon....

This old corker of a debate! Such a trivial one this, and subject to personal opinion and experience. I've owned more than a handful of pre CBS Fenders, and having starting working in vintage guitar shops aged 15, then having another 16 years working in them I've played hundreds, and have formed an opinion that is purely mine, not gospel. I've played good, teriible and outstanding vintage basses. In comparison, I've played good, terrible and outstanding Custom Shop Basses, USA series basses and custom makers too (currently loving Mike Lull's work). I sold my Pre CBS collection to buy a flat, I now have a Custom Shop collection. A good Custom Shop and a good pre CBS bass will differ, but neither is better, each has its own strengths and weaknesses. I would favour a pre CBS for feel and vibe, but a Custom Shop for value. Tone wise, they are both excellent in different ways. And they can't be directly judged because a pre CBS pickup has had years of demagnetising. I've put modern pickups into a pre CBS bass and it changed massively. My logic... A good bass is a good bass regardless of period. I've played too many bad vintage basses to think that they are all magic. But, I love the vintage vibe and if I could, I would own pre CBS Fenders again just for the joy of owning history, it have to be a good one though!

+1 for anti Roto flats too....
