They were seriously heavy so as a little 15 year old kid I used to struggle to lift them off easily on a Saturday morning. By the time I got midway down the alley to set them down for the day my arms would be knackered and I'd drop them to floor, only for the lovely Graham Noden to come up from the cellar to tell me how he gets covered in dust from the ceiling every time I drop them! Graham has been there for donkeys and it'll be a sad day when he leaves. It's a funny looking cellar but the vibe is always good. Luckily that's a listed building with cheaper rent than the rest so hopefully it'll stay rock n roll, oh yeah, and wonky!

I can't comment in the Di I you mentioned, but if it's any help, I use a MXR Micro amp plus when switching between active and passive basses, to ensure that my compressor and Di I have the same inout level on each bass. I only have the plus version as I fancied tine controls too, the regular version would do the trick nicely.

These were wired in parallel and were thinner and very clean sounding, though quite noisy which was annoying. I guess that's why the Ray 5 and Sterling have an added ghost coil under the pickup. To cancel the annoying hum. Why did I ever sell that bass? It had a P Bass pickup in it too and an active bypass. Oh yeah, I sold it to get an original 64 P Bass, which I later sold, darn it!!!

Clarky, have you checked out the CS 1955 Relic in Bassgear? I have one and can't ever imagine parting with it. It's a very special bass, still blows be away each time I pick it up.

Used to be mine that, I bought it purely for spares and to turn over so I'm to blame for the sh*te pickguard as I needed the original. I then sold the other parts to people that had more original basses in need of them. That wasn't at all a nice pre CBS bass, dodgy ones pop up often and that, in my opinion, is one. Edit. Hahahahaha!!!!!!!! I just read the listing, lies lies and more lies!!!!! I found the pickguard on the floor in the depths of a workshop in Denmark St, the bass got sold to the guy from Noah and The Whale after his 1966 (my old bass too) got nicked. Then when they recovered it he sold on this 63, probably because it's awful. so when did all those players get to use it eh?! Haha, still laughing!

Even though they are wired in parallel, when I tried the HH Stingrays I found that the tonal difference wasn't worth the agro of messing around with the switches for my tastes. This Darkglass B3K pedal is UNREAL!!!! There are so many fantastic sounds, I was expecting the switches to make little variance but they really do tweak it very nicely and with thought. Already found some amazing tones which will get well used and cover many areas. Couldn't be happier with this one, a complete contrast to the MXR which didn't have one single tone I liked. Sorry MXR, the overdrive just doesn't cut your usual mustard.

Right you are Cosmo. That got me thinking that's why he has brand new ringing strings on his lovely pre CBS Jazz? Its not a rubbish pedal, just not versatile or clear enough in the mix imo.

[/quote] Thanks for that mate, appreciated. I'm hoping that the extra treble might work in my favour, I'm using it with flats mostly and want it to be nice and bright. If I can't handle the trebs I'll swap it over as you've now pointed that out.

I like MXR guitar and bass pedals, always have. In my bass set up I currently have a Micro Amp Plus, Bass Compressor, Bass Envelope Filter and a Bass Octave Deluxe. They do the job for me and are always tweakable and well useable, even if I also like other versions of my pedals out there (sometiems more), it's the versatility, chasis size or match up to my basses that stuck me with these. So on Saturday I bought a Bass Overdrive, i never played one before and I had no time to test it. But what they hey, I like MXR, need a small chasis as I'm out of board space and surely it's a good'n at a very nice price? Not for me I'm sorry to say, far too muddy, not versatile and not a joy at all for me to play. I reckon it's a good pedal for the right player, but I was let down that it only had one real trick and didn't 'wow' me like the others. Anyway, bought a Darkglass B3K this lunchtime. Can't wait to get home and make some noise.

Why didn't I read this thread 4 hours ago... I just bought a USA made B3K and could have got the Finish one, after reading about all this and now being informed I wish I'd backed the Finish one!

It's easy for people to unfairly judge in forums, so they do. You wanted your dream bass, you didn't like their reasons, big deal, feel how you want to mate, who gives a toss what others chip in with.

Many a time whilst working in guitar shops I've swapped necks on Music Man and Fender basses and guitars to suit the punters tastes or just to experiment with new staff. Each time the tone differed, maple with more attack and top end, rosewood warmer. Edit to say that the body swaps always highlighted differences too when comparing ash and alder, not sure if I could tell them apart though without a comparison? But I do have a CS bass with lightweight ash body and maple board and it sounds exactly like you'd expect that combo to sound, lots of bottom end and clarity in the attack. Though Alder is a warm wood, lightweight ash has wonderful subs,

Hello mate. I found on mine that I have to use a Compressor all the time. The 18v pre amp is seriously powerful and very spikey. When using a compressor you can have a regular pickup height, rather than lowering it and compromising on the tone. I tried an Aguilar compressor but strangely enough, the Aguilar preamp was too much for it so I traded it for a MXR and that works great, really suits the bass nicely. Not only is it a problem solved, but I reckon a compressor is always good anyway for big tones, IMO.
