I can't comment in the Di I you mentioned, but if it's any help, I use a MXR Micro amp plus when switching between active and passive basses, to ensure that my compressor and Di I have the same inout level on each bass. I only have the plus version as I fancied tine controls too, the regular version would do the trick nicely.

Configuring pickups for series settings only?
Chiliwailer replied to Dood's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thank you, definitely some food for thought there as I may end up testing out some different configurations including a parallel coil mix.
A long while back I added a neck pickup to a stingray and had a coil tap added to each pickup. These were wired in parallel and were thinner and very clean sounding, though quite noisy which was annoying. I guess that's why the Ray 5 and Sterling have an added ghost coil under the pickup. To cancel the annoying hum. Why did I ever sell that bass? It had a P Bass pickup in it too and an active bypass. Oh yeah, I sold it to get an original 64 P Bass, which I later sold, darn it!!! -
Hey matey I have done but I am just not a fan of black basses, superficial though that sounds. If they could re-spray it blonde I would be in like Flynn!!!
I hear you, I'm half way through selling an absolutely gorgeous CS 64 P Bass, one of the best I've played and just because it's white, a colour I can't get on with. I like black basses but I'm not too keen on the sunburst patch on my relic, such a good bass though that I'll overlook that! Good luck on your search pal.

'63 P, bit expensive considering the condition?
Chiliwailer replied to alstocko's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Used to be mine that, I bought it purely for spares and to turn over so I'm to blame for the sh*te pickguard as I needed the original. I then sold the other parts to people that had more original basses in need of them. That wasn't at all a nice pre CBS bass, dodgy ones pop up often and that, in my opinion, is one. Edit. Hahahahaha!!!!!!!! I just read the listing, lies lies and more lies!!!!! I found the pickguard on the floor in the depths of a workshop in Denmark St, the bass got sold to the guy from Noah and The Whale after his 1966 (my old bass too) got nicked. Then when they recovered it he sold on this 63, probably because it's awful. so when did all those players get to use it eh?! Haha, still laughing! -
Configuring pickups for series settings only?
Chiliwailer replied to Dood's topic in Repairs and Technical
Even though they are wired in parallel, when I tried the HH Stingrays I found that the tonal difference wasn't worth the agro of messing around with the switches for my tastes. You can see the schematics on the EBMM website in the Stingray page. http://www.music-man.com/instruments/basses/stingray.html But no, I haven't tried it on my bass and may not have been of any help at all to you and perhaps even ticked off some Stingray HH players (apologies if so). Does that make sense? -
MXR - Love ya but you let me down....Darkglass to the rescue!
Chiliwailer replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Effects
For me the issue with the mxr bass od is the preset clean eq. I couldn't get on with losing that mid frequency presence. Dark sounding drives are great in the right situation, but without the option to temper it with a true clean sound severely limits the options.
+1 Shame to hear about the chorus, not that I have the room or a need for it. But I was thinking that perhaps next year I'd be restless one day and pop down the shops to get one for some good old fashioned consumer therapy. -
I go for coloured ones. Black ones usually get stolen so can be 'hot'.....

MXR - Love ya but you let me down....Darkglass to the rescue!
Chiliwailer replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Effects
This Darkglass B3K pedal is UNREAL!!!! There are so many fantastic sounds, I was expecting the switches to make little variance but they really do tweak it very nicely and with thought. Already found some amazing tones which will get well used and cover many areas. Couldn't be happier with this one, a complete contrast to the MXR which didn't have one single tone I liked. Sorry MXR, the overdrive just doesn't cut your usual mustard. -

Absolutely. Cameron, love a dirty filter too! Sounds lush with the octave too. -

Right you are Cosmo. That got me thinking that's why he has brand new ringing strings on his lovely pre CBS Jazz? Its not a rubbish pedal, just not versatile or clear enough in the mix imo. -
Unless you bought one of the prototypes direct from 3Leaf, the old stock USA built versions are still profiting Darkglass since they just outsourced the manufacture to the US for a period. However, a good reason to get the newer one is because it has a tweak to the 'attack' control. Instead of flat/boost1/boost2, it now has flat/boost/cut, very useful I reckon as I found the B3K I had too bright and might've kept it if it'd had a treble cut option.
Thanks for that mate, appreciated. I'm hoping that the extra treble might work in my favour, I'm using it with flats mostly and want it to be nice and bright. If I can't handle the trebs I'll swap it over as you've now pointed that out.

I like MXR guitar and bass pedals, always have. In my bass set up I currently have a Micro Amp Plus, Bass Compressor, Bass Envelope Filter and a Bass Octave Deluxe. They do the job for me and are always tweakable and well useable, even if I also like other versions of my pedals out there (sometiems more), it's the versatility, chasis size or match up to my basses that stuck me with these. So on Saturday I bought a Bass Overdrive, i never played one before and I had no time to test it. But what they hey, I like MXR, need a small chasis as I'm out of board space and surely it's a good'n at a very nice price? Not for me I'm sorry to say, far too muddy, not versatile and not a joy at all for me to play. I reckon it's a good pedal for the right player, but I was let down that it only had one real trick and didn't 'wow' me like the others. Anyway, bought a Darkglass B3K this lunchtime. Can't wait to get home and make some noise.

Why didn't I read this thread 4 hours ago... I just bought a USA made B3K and could have got the Finish one, after reading about all this and now being informed I wish I'd backed the Finish one!
Thanks mate. Is Paypal OK?
Sorry pal, that'd cause too many issues with payment codes.....
OK, I get the picture. I'm a complete prick for knowing exactly what I wanted, knowing it's within the EB's capability of manufacturing it, being prepared to pay a substantial amount of money for the "privilege" and having the hump with the condescending reply. I apologise to anyone who was offended by that.
Having met you twice, I can firmly confirm that you are not even close to being a prick, you're a top man with a huge passion for basses. It's easy for people to unfairly judge in forums, so they do. You wanted your dream bass, you didn't like their reasons, big deal, feel how you want to mate, who gives a toss what others chip in with.

Many a time whilst working in guitar shops I've swapped necks on Music Man and Fender basses and guitars to suit the punters tastes or just to experiment with new staff. Each time the tone differed, maple with more attack and top end, rosewood warmer. Edit to say that the body swaps always highlighted differences too when comparing ash and alder, not sure if I could tell them apart though without a comparison? But I do have a CS bass with lightweight ash body and maple board and it sounds exactly like you'd expect that combo to sound, lots of bottom end and clarity in the attack. Though Alder is a warm wood, lightweight ash has wonderful subs,
There used to be a UK bass builder who made basses like that - Eccles. His basses were short scale and entirely made from one piece of wood. He also made all his own pickups, hardware and so on. They were pretty unique.
Wish I'd bought one of these years ago when I had the chance.
Cheers guys, been fiddling about with it for the past hour or so, recording direct and really listening. It's definitely a gain issue, i think I underestimated just how hot the 18v Aguilar is. It's INSANE. So basically, backing off the gain (more than i thought i'd have to) has really improved the sound. Was thinking a compressor would do the trick as well chiliwailer. Thanks for the input!
Absolutely, and with the graphite neck it's doubly insane!!!! Enjoy!

(scratchy )Dimarzio USA 250k PUSH PULL
Chiliwailer replied to zvirus's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi, I have found very simple solution - returned the pot and do not need to worry any more... Very disappointed, will avoid any push pull pots in the future especially branded ones.
Last time I put a push pull into my Jazz it killed the tone. Anyone know of one that doesn't do that? -
Hello mate. I found on mine that I have to use a Compressor all the time. The 18v pre amp is seriously powerful and very spikey. When using a compressor you can have a regular pickup height, rather than lowering it and compromising on the tone. I tried an Aguilar compressor but strangely enough, the Aguilar preamp was too much for it so I traded it for a MXR and that works great, really suits the bass nicely. Not only is it a problem solved, but I reckon a compressor is always good anyway for big tones, IMO.
No, 1963 pickups were not dated at all. They should have black bobbins and maroon coloured coil wires. Solderings should be untouched. The black covers should have a more satin surface instead of a glossy one. GLWTS
Just to add that the tops of the pole pieces should be beveled. Pickups wire colour can vary in some rare instances, and a rewind wouldn't be uncommon either. The pickups wires looks pretty old and spot on according to the pics of the pots. Edit: where's my manners... Looks like a lovely bass, GLWTS!
Thank you mate! What I'm really after is something trad like an old-style tweed case but airline proof.
Perhaps buy the tweed from all parts and get a furniture maker to attach it? Tweed does damage easy though. Good luck. -
Most unusual 'First New Bass' story? Here's mine...what's yours?
Chiliwailer replied to Mick The Hat's topic in Bass Guitars
Not really unusual but... 14 years old and I got a Rockwood by Hohner LX100B, I couldn't stand Precisons back then, as most beginners bass were P Basses, and wanted a bass that looked good for metal, that one fitted the bill. Thing is, the action was super high, little did I know that's why I was having a hard time playing it. 5 months later and I had a Saturday job in Andys in Denmark Street, they quickly trained me how to set up guitars and then I realised the Rockwood could be sorted so I set up, much better. I sold it a while later for an Aria Integra, and then a year later it came back into Andys for sale. Was I sentimental enough to buy it back? Hell no, that bass was better off left behind.
