1. Although I love James Taylor and everything he does, his version of 'Day Tripper' on the 'Flag' album was pretty dire.
2. Listen to Jaco on 'Refuge of the Roads' from Joni Mitchell's 'Hejira' album. Not TOO complex and pretty easy to follow.
3. I usually hate slap bass, but in this case it's OK because it's not the usual noise-fest usually associated with that type of playing. That's actually quite melodic and understated, although why G.A.D didn't (or couldn't,which I very much doubt) play it I'll never know.I recently watched a live video of Larry Graham and Mark King on stage together.Turned it off after 30 seconds!Wodda racket!
4. Haven't seen it but 'Alan Yentob on Beyonce'??.You realise that image will stay with me for the rest of my life??!!
5. Watch the drummer in this clip https://www.youtube.com/embed/a9kPfelTEds.
6. Bass now sold via Gumtree.Thanx for your interest.
7. Not that I've noticed. As I said, the body is a tad smaller than most, but I find it a comfortable little bass to play.
8. When I Googled it,all I got was a reference to some Australian guy who bought cheap copy guitars, souped them up,and then sold them on.This bass has no serial number,or reference to any manufacturer. It just has a hand-made(as opposed to Home-made) feel to it.
9. I bought this little bass off member Zephead (Mike) just over a year ago.The time has come to move it on,as I'm clearing some space for radios for my SWL hobby, and also because I've very few gigs at the minute. This bass, when I bought it,had the name Harper on the headstock.I'd not heard of it and searching the internet produced nothing. The decal was basically on upside down so I removed it. It's a 5 string bass with through - neck design. The neck is 5 piece. the bass is also active with a 2 band EQ fitted.Pickups are 2 x MM type humbuckers which actually produce a lot of sound, all of it good. On close inspection it is obvious that the bass is handmade. In fact a joiner friend of mine (our drummer actually) commented on the quality of the wood used especially in the neck. The 'wings' are a very dark wood, and the body of the bass is slightly smaller than usual. The bridge however needed attention.I had to have it recessed into the body as it was at it's max regarding string height IE couldn't be lowered any more. Also, whoever built the bass didn't check on string spacing and pole piece positions,as they don't line up exactly. The neck is nice and fast, and it's generally a nice little bass. I'm looking £90 ono + shipping.
10. Hi.It is with heavy heart that I offer my trusty Squier for sale.I bought it off this site many years ago, from whom I can't remember, but now due to lack of gigs,I'm thinning down the flock a bit.Well that and my other hobby SWL.I need some new radios. This is a stock VMJ,but has had an ARTEC 2-band pre amp installed. The block inserts on the neck have been converted to white MOP,and the scratchplate has been replaced with a Tort-type.Oh and the headstock has also been er....modified A nice bass overall,I'm looking £140 ono. plus postage It's actually the one in my avatar, with a few changes.Sorry the pics a bit dim.
11. I take your point guys, but lets not forget. This is a Legend bass.I got it for £50 of the Bay.I aint gonna spend big bucks.I've done an Encore P-bass in the past, and the dot markers were confusing as I didn't leave fret lines,so this time I'm going to get rid of the f/board dots as best I can. Then I can re-place the side dots in their proper positions. As Lfalex says, dots are OK on a lined neck, but not on an unlined.Onwards and upwards.Thanx for the input.
12. Pure aesthetics.Nothing else.I think that a fretless neck with dots looks crass.Apart from the fact that they don't serve any purpose and are a bit misleading.I just don't like them.
13. OK I've done a search on defretting but I cant find a specific answer on this.I'm in the process of defretting an old Legend Jazz bass.Getting on OK so far,but I want the neck to be devoid of dots when I'm finished. How do I remove the fingerboard dots? The side dots can be drilled out and filler applied,I know that. But I'd want the fingerboard to be relatively blemish free.I guess the dots can be 'prised' out with a sharp instrument, but I'm not sure. What's the best way to go about this.Someone once said to leave them in and using a permanent marker of the appropriate colour, colour them in to match the finish.I'd like that.I'm quite good at colouring in.
14. No video but Norman Watt-Roy's bassline in I.D's 'My Old Man' is really inventive. But then, most of what he does is, anyway
15. I've often wondered if Peter Hook goes off stage at the end of the night in agony.Ever tried that stance? With the bass round your ankles?Personally I think it looks ridiculous, and you certainly would not have full control of fingerboard or r/h positioning. That has got to be uncomfortable. He probably thinks to himself "Why did I ever start playing in this bloody position?" The things we do for rock'n'roll.
16. Yeah,I think it must be that Coilte. It's the only time it has happened,ie sitting down,no strap, acoustic bass.It has never happened with electric bass standing. But as Twigman said,it could be cramp, and rubbing my arm between wrist and elbow did actually help, but as i said,it felt as if it wasn't far from happening again.I always thought cramp involved severe pain tho' Not so,it seems.
17. To me,cramp is always associated with pain. There is no pain at all.Probably due to the fact that I was sitting down, and had the bass on my knee without a strap,my arm had to rest on the edge of the bass.I should add that this has happened before,in the same situation. In the same pub in the same seat, with the same bass actually.(RSI? Could be,definitely! )
18. I was involved in a heavy session (musical) last night in our local dive.About 6 guys with acoustics,me on acoustic bass, and during a pretty vigorous version of the Small Faces 'Sha la la la lee',my right hand suddenly, for want of a better word, seized.I could not get my fingers to do what I wanted. No pain whatsoever, but it was as if I had no control. At one point my index and 2nd fingers curled up and I couldn't uncurl them. This lasted about a minute and then was fine, but for the rest of the night,I felt as if it was just about to happen again. One of the guys said it was because of my forearm resting on the sharp edge of the bass, which it was,and could have been causing some sort of nerve or muscle problem. Anybody ever had this?Didn't like it,by the way!
