1. I think I dislike everything except Fender Precisions and Jazzes, but I prefer the P bass. And the Thunderbird, love the look but have never been able to get along with one. I might have another bash with my new-found plectrum enthusiasm, though.
2.
Great news and congrats for getting through the gig!
Cheers It certainly felt good!
3. Thanks, it had to be done, it's been my target since I realised I wasn't going to make the December gigs, this has been the driving force behind my rehabilitation. I used one of my home made ex-credit card picks and it was fine.
4. Well, I made it through the gig. Used a plectrum (the same one!) all the way through, first set was an hour, second was about 10 mins longer. Couldn't move my hand after the gig, but working as usual this morning, no more aches and pain than any other morning. I played my US standard Precision through an Ashdown EB180 1x12 combo that was also DI'd into the PA and it sounded different to my usual style, but in some ways better, crisper and more defined. I'm definitely going to practice using a pick even if/when I get the use of my fingers back. Best of all, I'm back gigging with the band just three months after the accident which left me with a badly broken wrist and a smashed cuboid in my foot.
5. I was wheelchair bound for a couple of months recently following an accident. I played at home and managed a couple of rehearsals in the chair by removing the sides. I assume that all chairs have removable sides/arm rests to make getting in and out of them easier. I used a standard P bass, though would have fond it easier with a shorter scale had I had one.
6.
Right, I'm sending Tuksu round
I'm a bit further away than Kuusankoski now. Not that I don't miss Finland, my (English) wife baked pulla yesterday and the memories came flooding back.
7.
Do I get a brownie point for understanding that?
Ei.
8.
That's when you realise you should have had a backup.
We need a 'do you take a spare jumbo jet to your gigs?' thread
9.
Onnea FinnDave!
Paljon kiitoksia
10. I'm sure the feeling is familiar to most pub bands.
11. Thanks for the tip, I can hold the pick between thumb and 'straight' forefinger, but can't bend the upper joint of the finger at the moment. My gig bag for tonight has the usual leads, strap, etc. plus a small box of picks and ibuprofen gel, ibuprofen caplets, codeine, and paracetamol. My physio basically said take what you need to get through it and deal with the pain tomorrow, she reckons I can't do any further damage just playing the bass.
12. Our guitarist is known (sometimes) as 'Skip' Stroud, as he finds all sorts of useful things in skips. The bands lighting, an Ashdown 300w head and a Strat copy, for example! He didn't find all these on the same day, obviously!
13. Paul, my computer won't open it No chance of getting out to a music shop today (especially since the nearest one closed recently) and the gig's tonight. My thumb is not as mobile as it should be either, two metal plates and a lot of screws in my wrist are the problem.
14. Looking for plekky inspiration, I remembered this track from a fair old while ago. Turn it up and listen to how well the bass fits in with the medieval instruments. A great instrumental track by any standards, it really builds up the tension. https://youtu.be/j3H2KWuYgtc?t=1
15. Part of my problem with a pick (and probably when I play finger style too) is that I can't stop myself really laying into the playing, OK, so I play softly when there's a quiet section, but we don't have many of those, and the band always wants me to drive the music along with the bass. I've 'acquired' a whole load of picks 'Gibson 351' shaped, punched from credit cards and similar. I'll have to use them tonight as I have no alternative. I have suggested that the audience might like to place bets on how many songs I can stagger through before collapsing!
16.
It would have made more sense had I just said "like pinching between your thumb & left side of your index finger nail, but not touching the nail". Ignore the pen comment, the more I think about it, the less sense it makes to me too!
I reckon that's close to how I was holding the pick last night, but haven't got one to hand to try now! Thanks for clearing the pen thing up, been doing all sorts of odd tricks wth end for the last couple of hours
17.
I don't make a fist when holding the plectrum. More like how you hold a pen, but finger & thumb touch opposite way.
Even with a pen in my hand, I can't quite work out the 'opposite way'!
18.
Thanks Dave All good over here in CN. I hope all is well with you! Cheers Mike
Cheers, Mike, things are on the up after getting knocked off my bike 3 months ago. First gig since then tomorrow night
19. Unfortunately, I can't get make a fist with my finger to hold the pick against the side of my index finger like that, there is not enough movement post-accident to allow that. I'll get through tomorrow's gig somehow, I am sure (and stubborn enough) about that. How much pain I'm in on Sunday is unimportant. I have plenty of painkillers!
20.
PS Standlake ..thats like the the Australian bush isn't it ?
That's right, it's miles from anywhere, even further from Witney than Ducklington! Just tried shortening my bass strap a couple of inches, that and a night's sleep made pick playing a bit easier this morning, not likely to have another chance until tomorrow's gig (the Swan pub & brewery, Farringdon, as you were too polite to ask;) )
21. Hi Mike, hope all is well up there in Chippy N. I've had a couple of Classic 60s Jazzes. One was a few years ago, sunburst, poly finish, which I stupidly sold when I left Finland, and a later nitro finish one, also sunburst, which I bought new when they first came out (about 3 years ago) and still have. For a year or more it was my main gigging bass, but in the last 12 months I have been using Precisions more. I would say that they are bloody good basses, even the nitro at full price (around 800 quid I think, but it comes with a hard case) is hard to beat. I sold a US standard jazz not long after buying the Classic 60 nitro as it was I had stopped playing the US, the mex was much better.
22.
I played with a pick exclusively for decades before playing fingerstyle, now I do both and am completely bisexual. Is that what I mean?
No no no, the term is 'ambisexual'.
23. I can see this is going to be a challenge, very little grip in the middle finger and not a lot of wrist movement. I tried a couple of picks that our guitarist had last night, one was thick with a mulled in grip but my hand tired quickly, the other was a medium weight Gibson style, which I just about managed with, though needed to stretch between songs, also the pick moved between my fingers and I needed both hands to reposition it as my right hand was locking up. Still as my physio said yesterday, I'm lucky to still have a right hand! It was quite a bad accident, and only three months ago, but tomorrow's gig was booked last Autumn and has been my target since the day of the accident. I will experiment with strap height if I get a chance today, I found I was holding the pick at an angle to the strings and think if I raised the bass a couple of inches, it would be straighter, which hopefully will reduce the effort needed to keep stop the damn thing rotating between finger and thumb.
