Good stuff - kind of in your face - and even though I'm not a big fan of this rappy stuff - I think this sounds cool and the lyrics are good - definitely keep this up, nice vibes... also I can hear the drums are live in places - but what/how did you do the programmed stuff? Good end result whatever it is. I agree with SteveO's comments as it would be nice to hear this tune develop a bit more, some harmonic stuff would be nice, building up to some kind of chord sequence or melody - going from sparse to lush sounds is always a winner song writing-wise - anyway really good to hear some more experimental stuff - that works - in the Recordings forum... more please

Here's my write up of the gig - such a cool night... http://www.jazzwisemagazine.com/news-mainmenu-139/68-2011/12075-jazz-breaking-news-pino-palladino-and-chris-dave-invoke-the-spirit-of-fela-marley-and-dangelo-at-ronnie-scotts-

Was an awesome gig, as you would expect loads of great grooves on a really varied set that included tunes by Marley, Tony Williams and an encore of 'Chicken Grease', not to mention a couple of storming Fela Kuti tunes... it was killing - of course Chris Dave was amazing but so was Pino. The place was rammed, every muso in town was there...

South East Bass Bash No.5, Surrey, Saturday 24th September 2011
Sorry to hear that Mike! Hope all goes well and see you next year...
Aye it's annoying - I could stand around chatting about music and or bass all day especially with so many likeminded people but life and music sometimes have to come first, I've got 4 quite important gigs coming up and reheasing on Saturday is the one chance we have before the first gig on Monday night - so doing, rather than talking about bass is the order of the day I'm afraid - see you next year I hope Mike -
Well done guys - all looks good - liking it a lot - feels fresh and contemporary... better than a certain other bass site I could mention - congrats on all the hard work that must have gone into this Cheers Mike

Marcus is a phenomenal ALL ROUND musician - and he rocks as a clinician too, something I filmed quite a few years ago when he played the old Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTJrngd1p3g He might slap a lot, but he never looses the groove - and that's the difference

I'm now looking at having to attend quite an important rehearsal slap bang in the middle of the day so I'm sorry to say it looks like I'm not going to make it - I'd love to be there to hang and play but I'm in the fortunate position of actually having some decent gigs at decent venues coming up so unless that all gets cancelled I simply can't do both - if I can come I will - hope that's not too much of a problem - sorry dudes Mike -
If I'm totally honest I don't like his playing at all - the false harmonics thing is jaw dropping but if I put his phrasing, tone and general musicianship up against my man Gary Willis (or dare I say Jaco) I'm afraid there's no contest - he might be able to sight read and shred until the cows come home, IMHO that does not make you a 'great' player - just my thoughts on the thing but I've tried hard to like this guy's work and I just don't - all due respect to his abilities though, he knows his way around a six string fretless and no mistake
Hey URB, just saw you are living right nearby (I'm 5 minutes from Clapham North), have enjoyed watching your instructional clips when I was in Holland so must meet up for a beer/chat sometime! Cheers, Andy
If you make it please come and have a chat - always nice to meet international BCers... -

I'm coming still I think - I'm going to be there early but will be heading to the Kent coast for the evening so I'll probably leave by 2 or 3pm - so if anyone is still keen to listen to me prattle on about various technical playing things then I'm up for doing that around midday... hope that sounds OK -
G played on the third fret of the E string... I dig that key as well, major, minor or dominant 7...

'Quite Firm' by Laurence Cottle bass cover including transcription
urb replied to malcthebass's topic in Recording
Very good - it's a nightmare tune and you've nailed it - minor, minor criticism was some of the timing floated slightly off but damn you've got it note for note - good work indeed... I'll have a look at the transcrition - any chance you could PM me a link to a PDF of it please? -
I'm now using one of these new USB 2.0 Focusrite Scalett 18i6 ones I really like it - very clean and super sharp sound
-
Errrrrr - anyone spotted this??? Pino is playing his first gig as bandleader at Ronnie Scott's on 5th October - with hip hop drum monster Chris Dave on the gig - should be immense... http://www.ronniescotts.co.uk/performances...feat-chris-dave Mike
-
This is the live version - and I agree about Alain, he's a monster but his extreme technique does get a little wearing after a while - but he's insanely musical as well - the only other minus points he gets here is for 'extreme pony-tailing' - seriously great player though
-
Another one - this time a fast Latin tune http://snd.sc/nyFgKG Hope you enjoy - there's a brilliant Fender Rhodes solo by Chris Jerome on this one...
-
Hey folks Just had another cracking gig with my band Groove Digger Collective last night - and wanted to share a tune from the off-the-desk mix - I've put it through Izotope's Ozone 4 mastering software to boost levels and widen the sound - anyway it's quite viibing - apologies for the extended slappy solo... http://snd.sc/qQIY7R Hope you enjoy Mike

Hey peeps Hope you are all doing good out there - just wanted to tell you all about my next gig with my cracking 8-piece jazz funk collective Groove Digger - we're on again at one of London's finest live venues, the Hideaway in Streatham on Sat 3rd September - it's a great place for a night out and the music will be suitably funky - it's a top notch band full of amazing players, and I'm on bass... so anyway if you're London based and looking for something cool to do on Saturday come on down. http://www.hideawaylive.co.uk/groove-digger-0309 More sounds and videos here http://soundcloud.com/munkio/boogie-on-reggae-woman-live http://soundcloud.com/munkio/windjammer-live http://soundcloud.com/munkio/static-by-groove-digger http://vimeo.com/21845558 Cheers folks Mike
MMmm...Nope, no "default" bashing just crap music regardless of who it is,Puketastic. keep your eye on the ball old son.
Don't worry my eye is very much on the ball - well more like I'm keeping my eye on you - I just don't mind a musician as talented as Vic having a bit of fun and musically that's a cool tune whether you agree with the philosophy or not, 'crap' is just your opinion of it and one which I respect but I've heard a lot worse... my earlier comment is based on the fact that AS SOON as a thread on Victor appears anywhere on the web what starts out as something positive soon turns negative - he either plays to fast and flashy and is perceived as a show off and nothing more - or his wisdom and musical abilities are flamed because he's so open and is prepared to write a song about an interesting subject - in terms of it being 'crap you might want to check out some African music - it's all good - but then I suspect not. Anyway - feel free to cary on hating - go for it if it makes you feel better - and as for implying Vic is er 'gay' - I think his wife and four kids might have something to say about that too
-
yep sorry about that, though not as sorry as Vic should be.
Mmmm, more Vic bashing - kind of the default setting for the web
Sure. But then a technical exercise played with real feel says more to people than a one note bassline played without soul, no? The thing with this debate is that it always ends up along the lines of: "You can't learn groove/funk/whatever, you have to 'feel' it" and "technical ability is no match for soul". Both of which statements are complete ****ocks, to be honest. Why? Because technical ability and soul/groove are not mutually exclusive. You don't just have one at the expense of the other... you can actually be technically brilliant and have oodles of groove; likewise you can be technically retarded and have no soul whatsoever... or like most musicians, you probably lie somewhere between these extremes. I hate to say it, but the technical vs soulful argument is fundamentally flawed. It's just not that simple, and the reason this debate keeps cropping up is because people want to boil it down to just one or the other - technical or soulful - when the reality is always a mixture of both. As with most things, people who are very technically able often make it look easy. That doesn't mean they're gifted by the God of Groove. It just means they probably invested hours/years of laborious practice to get to where they're at.
+1 man spot on
-
It's easy for someone like Victor to talk about groove, because he's at the stage where his technique and his knowledge are so deep that he can just play and let it out,he can just concentrate on making it feel good, the rest of it has become second nature.....and think that is an important thing.Victor doesn't need to talk about his technique anymore,it's already very well documented,he can now just talk about the music. It's all well and good talking about 'groove',but I think that technique and harmonic knowledge are equally as important-none of them are mutually exclusive.
Totally but a lot of supremely technical and theorehtically knowledgable players - on ANY instrument - often lose sight of that primal quality of communicating with an audience - I've seen so many advanced players that leave me wanting more emotionally or in the groove department - VW is certainly a great example of an advanced player with an advanced awareness of exactly how to reach an audience - be it with 1 note or 100... but like you say none of this 'being a good musician' stuff is mutally exclusive... it's all relevant and required to reach the next level.

Esperanza Spalding on a fretless jazz rippin it up..
urb replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Her new album is going to be called 'Radio Society Music' and will feature her on electric bass pretty much all the way through - it's going to be a mix of soul, pop and funky-fusion - she wants to bring improv back to the mainstream - which sounds good to me -
A tenner????? Blimey that's a lot, I get cabs to the next towns for less than that around Addlestone! I'll get a few quotes and post up the cab co. numbers for you when I get a chance.
To be honest it was around £7 I think from the station - sorry I live in London and have a slightly warped sense of how much stuff costs - I'm used to being ripped off - I've been to Norway 4 times and that's even worse i.e. a pint = £9 - it's silly I know - but considering I don't drive but do own a car (ironically) with my misses I am fully aware of just how expensive driving is now - so a tenner here and there on cabs seems relatively good value somehow! If anyone is driving from London and can offer me a lift I'll gladly pay petrol money - I'll be able to bring an extra bass if I can get a lift too - I'm based in Brixton but am happy to meet in central London or near Victoria or similar if that's easier.... let me know Thanks Mike
