A spotty youth in mid America with and endless supply of flat coca cola and cold pizza is waiting to demonstrate his tech prowess to you on youtube as soon as he possibly can.
OR... check out this amazing engineer/producer/composer guy David Earle a.k.a. SF Logic Ninja - check out the vids at the bottom of this list as he's done over 100 and the latest ones follow on from all the early ones - he's very good at explaining stuff in a clear and concise way, and he's quite funny - anyway he's good: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=UUrFzX-cr3xK_ma8ICLA517g&feature=plcp I'm sure you'll find other folks that have done other recording advice type videos - but this guy's my fave and a good place to start - Google any questions you have as well there many, many similar forums to BC that are the 'recording' equivalent... one word of warning - if you thought getting into bass and bass gear was bad for GAS, it's NOTHING compared to studio GAS... there are WAY too many gadgets and bits of software out there that will eat your time and money... just so you know Mike

Thanks guys - I love grooving hard with this band - it's fun playing with such good musicians too... cheers for listening M
It just sounds like some very naff Return To Forever offcuts. The tripe they jam out but would never dream of putting near their albums. Too many hoary old key sounds, and a sort of naff faux-retro vibe. His tone is awful too. No, I don't really think much of this at all, and as a big RTF and fusion fan it pains me to say that. I would love for fusion to be re-invigorated and for some great players to really get active and refresh that genre. Sadly, I think it's cheesy rubbish like this that has done the genre in, because it was essentially watered down rubbish like this that spoiled things the first time around. Some of it also has a bit of a Level 42 flavour, as if Mike Lindup said one day at an early 80's soundcheck "hey guys, lets play some tuneless rubbish. Mark, you can do what you want but make sure you keep it meandering and aimless. If by chance an original sounding lick pops into your head, store it but don't play it here". What a load of dross.
Good points well made - and a very fair assessment - maybe it's my poor taste that make me like bits of it or rather I'm not really comparing it to the likes of RTF - I think he's coming from a different angle altogether - what some of you might not know is that he played with Erykah Badu for years and still plays with Suicidal Tendencies - I'm not making excuses for some of the music I just dig some of it because it's different - if you want some banging jazz rock/fusion there's plenty of it around that's really good right now - Ranjit Borat's Sonic Boom - Human Element - Jeff King's Catalyst - Rudresh Mahanthappa's Samdhi - anyway just my teppence worth - I've made my point I'll leave now M

I think he's good and I think it's dangerous to dismiss someone who's only been around for five minutes - give the guy a chance to develop - he's got a lot of good ideas even if you don't necessarily like them. Anyone who is being hailed as the 'future' of anything is almost always the victim of a journalist desperate to 'get there first' and break a new artist... like I said don't believe the hype - well it's obvious you guys don't - just be careful you don't knee-jerk yourselves too far into reverse...
I agree with Chris and Silddx. It's total crap and dare I say it, sounds like music that got rejected out of Casino Royale (the spoof original) for being too lounge or boring. Whilst I don't necessarily think that there's much to be discovered that's "original" per se, that stuff is so insipid that for it to be called the future of anything except the lift music at Dignitas leaves me somewhat perplexed.
So from that I take it a feature on him in BGM would go down well... not... oh well
-
I like the dude but I think there's a danger he'll get over-hyped - he works with Flying Lotus who's one of the most exciting producers around right now - I don't think it's going to be everyone's cup of tea but that's to say it's sh!te - personally I like the album, it's a grower and I think it's good there's a bassist out there trying to write and sing his own tunes rather than just doing the usual shred fest... anyway I like a lot of stuff many people don't like!
Mike, the funky new tune above this post is great. The Sei sounds nice as ever.
Thanks Chris - the Sei is the gift that keeps on giving... it really is a wonderful bass - works for so many things - cheers for the feedback

Hey Chaps and Chapesses I finally got around to editing some of the best bits from a gig I did back in October with my band Groove Digger Collective - we were in a nine-piece formation for the night with great players in the band like Italian tenorist Roberto Manzin (who plays great solos on all the tunes except 'Push'), pianist Chris Jerome, trumpeter Rowan Porteus, saxophonist Matt Telfer, - plus a great rhythm section with Jon Newey on percussion, Saleem Raman on drums, myself on bass and Pete Duncan on guitar/arrangements - plus our singer Julia Nutter. All recorded off the desk but mixed by the sound engineer and then mastered a bit by me... anyway it was a great night, by the time we played 'Cold Duck Time' we were rocking - and the place loved it too - anyway I hope you enjoy some of this stuff - I'll be putting it up for Download from Bandcamp at some point soon as well: Static http://soundcloud.com/munkio/static-live-at-pizza-express Windjammer http://soundcloud.com/munkio/windjammer-live-at-pizza Push http://soundcloud.com/munkio/push-live-at-pizza-express Cold Duck Time / Wicked Game http://soundcloud.com/munkio/cold-duck-time-live-at-pizza Thanks for listening Mike

For anyone who hasn't seen this in the Recordings forum - a new little ditty from me - just beginning work on some new originals - this is kind of work in progress, hope you dig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-3eAffBhOg Cheers Mike

Thanks guys - really appreciate the nice feedback - really got the bug to start writing some new things now - just started work on an Afro-groove type thing - and this tune will hopefully develop as well. Bilbo - sorry for not checking out your Inner Urge recording - just been busy - will have a listen soon - hope that's cool Cheers chaps Mike

OK - sounds like you might need to start from scratch here - I did the move from PC to Mac about six years ago and I've not looked back since. I was using Cubase and it was driving me insane as soon as I started using Garageband I could actually get on with the business of making music - most of the plugins in GB are excellent - the latest version has been radically overhauled as well - the new interface is really clear - plus you can get a ton of Apple loops that are very useable - and it works great for MIDI as well... I know you may well be used to Reaper but as a free alternative to get you going I highly recommend it. You can also transfer GB projects to Logic and or export the files as WAVs and bang them into Reaper when you get all your plugins sorted... USB Soundcards have never been so cheap and the quality obviously can vary from the OK to the excellent - something like this would get you going in no time: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fast-Track-USB-Interface-Software/dp/B002QZ402Q/ref=pd_cp_MI_4 I'm using the Focusrite Scralett 18i6 but the model before that is also killing - and just over £100 http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/27486073/Focusrite-Scarlett-2i2-Portable-USB-Recording-Interface/Product.html?_%24ja=tsid:11518|cat:27486073|prd:27486073 This would be a great investment - I run Logic Pro 9 and Ableton Live on my MBP 13 and have no problems at all with it - for the price of a decent soundcard and by using Garageband you'll be able to get some great results - there are zillions of great tutorial vids on recording techniques on youtube and the people here are very well informed too - so I say spend a little bit of dosh and get stuck in Hope that helps Mike
I also referred to your 'How to do a video' thread, so thanks lol Si
Cool man - I need to update that I think - I've found a few other things that make it even easier - glad it was useful tho... Cheers M

Just got the urge to start working on some new ideas - here's a little something I put together yesterday - got to add lots more stuff yet but thought I'd share anyway - hope you dig it - very happy with the tones I'm getting via my Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 interface and Logic of course... Sounds ace Si - I must get me one of those thumb things... sounds and looks cool
+1 It's all down to using the right earplugs. If you use cheap foam jobbies (such as I used to use at track days) then they protect your ears from loudness ... they do absolutely nothing to help you hear things. If you use ER20's (or, for considerably more money, ER15's or ER25's which are moulded precisely to your ears) then not only are your ears protected but you can still hear everything.
Massive +1 They really are worth the money and will make saving your hearing a pleasurable experience rather than an inconvenience - my biggest problem now is recording / listening to stuff on headphones... I like it loud-ish... doh! But I have the ER15s and they really are amazing...

Open Tap Harmonics and Tapping/Slapping (New Video)
urb replied to Captain Bass's topic in Recording
Sounds wicked Andy I have no criticism whatsoever to offer - my only suggestion in terms of a track would be to integrate another part, keyoard or guiair, to take the ideas even further sonically - I think you've completely developed your own style and sound and it grooves great as well - so all I can add is that to see you develop musically it would be awesome to hear some of the lovely harmonic things expanded and or doubled - but I'm sure you're capable of doing that yourself. I only say this as while this music obviously appeals to us bass heads it's also good to think about reaching out to non-bass types as well - but it's all there and I really love the development of your ideas - the end section was my fave - really cool. One question: are the drums live or progammed? Either way - nice work. Cheers Mike -
Something new from Evan - I like it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sB6zVt3C0c

Love Evan and his music - and he plays B-G just for the record - a real talent and a great guy

Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Gregory Porter.... Go and buy 'Water' now - a simply stunning jazz vocal album with a ton of soul and gospel stuff in there too - his new one is called Be Good and is dare I say even better - out early next year - and is just beautiful... the man is a real diamond singer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1SUyeIqWWM

I use Superior drummer a lot and love it - but EZ drummer is great too - so well, easy, to use and it sounds great - highly recommended - I struggled with BFD for years and SD was such a relief I haven't used anything else for the past couple of years... EZdrummer is a great place to start though. I'd also recommend EZplayer Pro which allows you to brows and edit MIDI files - which makes putting together long drum parts a lot easier... but that actually is a feature of EZdrummer... so buy this now - it's bloody brilliant.
I think in most cases the fatigue is in the perception of the participant, the site offers (to my mind at least) the same as it ever did. Which is only good as far as I can see.
I agree - I visit BC pretty much every day for a 'check in' but feel less and less inclined to start debates or participate in them - I've been fortunate to meet and hang with some great players, not just bassists, this year and get a lot of musical input from them - I'm not into any kind of gear right now, I have what I need - and I've been busy with work and making/playing my own music too - and I have a family - so all in all life is very busy and very musical for me all the time - BC rarely comes top of my list of priorities but I am pleased to see it still thriving and full of useful and interesting stuff. Personally I've been getting a lot more of that away from the damn computer and in 'real life' (remember that folks?) so while it's fun to pop by, I've been feeling the same sense of board fatigue Pete describes... oh well - it's just natural I guess.

A Portrait of Jaco - Laurence Cottle Big Band gig
urb replied to phil625sxc's topic in General Discussion
Flipping amazing gig - the best thing I've ever heard Laurence do - the band were incredible so was Laurie's playing, not to mention the fact he played all of Jaco's hardest tunes all in the same set - and they did two sets - plus his arrangements and newly written stuff was stunning - it really blew me away and they even did two encores - he told me afterwards he's never done two encores at Ronnie's in the 25 years he's played there.... awesome. -
enjoyed the chordage movement. nice.
Thanks man - it really is just the start of a new tune - got a lot more to do on this yet... just need to get round to working on it soon!
