1.
OT but I'm looking forward to hearing it- I understand where Doddy is coming from though with his point re Marcus. For me, Silver Rain and Free felt like they could have come from the same period as M2 which was a healthy progression from Tales. I still think Tales and M2 are his best with Tales edging it on a conceptual level. I'd love to hear some more bop-influenced funk along the lines of Jean Pierre - his jams with Dario Deidda on YouTube show him in a different light to the usual.
Yes I agree too that MM had got kind of stuck in a bit of a rut - the new stuff is the perfect mix of jazz and funk - really fresh playing and some killer unison heads and solos etc - it really is great
2.
I actually dig it. It's got a totally different vibe than his last album and I like that. I think there is a big influence of Jojo Mayer and John Davis with the more electronic aspects of the album and I think that's cool. I like how he's doing something different with each album, unlike guys like Marcus (who I love,as we know) who has been kind of stagnant on his last couple of albums.
Er, you should hear the new Marcus album - it's killing and the best thing he's done in years - it'll be out soon
3. I really like her new album - Black Gold is one of the most pop orientated tunes on there, there are plenty of better tunes with great baselines and some cool vocals too - I'm annoyed I'm away when she's playing Koko in London in May as that should be a great gig
4. OK last goddamn post here for a while I promise - here's a remixed version - annoyingly the audio sync is a tiny bit out but hopefully the sound is better now - hope you enjoy
5.
Can it use standard VSTs? Cos I have exactly the right dirty phaser for that reverb return, but its a swine to find on the interweb anymore (even though it was a freebie). It was catchily called the WPhaser XD-78s, has a great sound and a built in saturation doohickey, does very very cool things to reverb sends! Also klnown as the Warm Phaser from Nomad Factory apparently You may find its in this bundle
Thanks dude - yes Ableton can use pretty much all VSTs - I'll check those out - thanks again - I'm definitely going to remix this - the lines are there be great if you could hear them eh??? Appreciate your advise squire
6.
How about a tiny bit of grind, and a very very subtle chorus? If you can identify the difference as chorus then its too much, the overdrive should be equally as unobtrusive, just to add a bit of upper frequency harmonic info to drive the chorus really. Then back the verb return off by half, and if possible get the predelay on the verb to be either just off a semiquaver or quaver long (not dead on, generally late sounds more relaxed, early sounds more urgent, you figure out which feels right for you), so it drives off the last note not the present one almost.... That will standout, but not in quite such looosttttt-----dooowwwwnnnn---ttheeee----welllllll way. If your processing can do it, then put a very subtle dirty phaser on the reverb return only, for maximum coolness. I never managed to get my hand to feel right when plucking the string I just thumped on the upstroke. Will have to investigate further now - ta!
Thanks man - I feel a remix coming on.... the great thing with Ableton is that when you record it's a full multi-track recording - so going in an tweaking effects and adding automation etc is very easy - the cool thing is all the raw clean bass is there and can be tweaked no problem.... aside from having to delete this vid and upload a new version - oh well this is what this is all about - the learning curve!
7. I just used these guys for a record I'm working on: http://stardeltamastering.com/the-stardelta-way/ http://stardeltamast...lmp3-mastering/ They did an amazing job...
8. It's called PB Underground 'cos it's the drummer's name and I think he started the band - dull story yes - but a simple catchy name nonetheless - the good thing is it doesn't matter once you've heard them... I could say the same for many, many bands out there
9. They sound absolutely killing - I may pop into the Pizza gig on Saturday - Pete Biggin is my fave funk/groove drummer right now -saw him with Incognito at Ronnie's and he stole the show for me - his groove is massive and his kick drum was almost like a second bass player on the gig....
10.
The book I recommended is a very good source for the answers to tnit's question but, in a nutshell, for me, the answer is 'all of the above'. If Iam playing a tune I know well, it is more likely that I will relax and play more 'intuitively' because I know the changes well. If, however, I am playing something new that I haven't seen before, I am more likely to be in a 'conscious theory' mode. Often, if I am playing a tune I kind of know, I will play half of it in relaxed mode and half (the middle 8 of Have You Met Miss Jones?) using consciously applied theory. Strangely, I often use theory more consciously when I am playing walking lines. But there are examples where I am playing along with a sax plyer who keeps playing a little riff and I can consciously process the m,elody and harmonise it, creating a nice little improvised effect, a 'yeah' moment . Often, it is a case of 'hearing' what someone else is doing harmonically so you can react to it. I guess it is like understanding the written word. We don't process all of the grammar, we just know what it means but, if we are trying to hear or say something important or complicated, we are more likely to pause and consider our next sentence.
I couldn't have described this better myself Rob - like you I tend to think more when I'm walking lines - I guess because when you're laying it down behind the other musos you have play a constant, and hopefully, flowing series of musical ideas, at least when you are soloing you have the option of stopping, leaving space and starting from a new bar/place if you mess up! Hence I guess that enables you/we/me to be able to feel freer when soloing... oh the irony Also like you I find when I'm playing with a sax player and they rattle off some mad descending run that I would never normally think of in 'bass' terms I've suddenly found myself playing a similar line, without really thinking about it, afterwards in my solo - and all this stuff really come together when you are completely relaxed and really deep in the 'zone', and on those rare occasions when this happens - anything seems possible... I'll be working this crap for the rest of my life for sure.
11. Cool dudes be good to see you both M
12. Aye aye - I just wanted to say I'm definitely going to this - I'm staying in Cheltenham for the whole weekend so will be around for extended hang-age - but also I've just heard a sneak preview / white label of his new album and it's really good - very powerful jazz funk - all instrumental (so far) with some killer bass/brass lines going on and the usual meaty thumb work really driving it along - his best stuff for a while then Anyway hope to see some of you lot there - should be a cracker - he's also doing the Ritz in Manchester and London Royal Festival Hall! http://bandonthewall.org/events/3383/ http://ticketing.southbankcentre.co.uk/find/music/gigs-contemporary/tickets/marcus-miller-62456 So there you go.... Mike

Lots of interesting and helpful looking vids here: http://vimeo.com/hdez/videos
15.
Disappointed there was nothing about 'Big Time' and the drumsticks! But, dear God, did you see the dodgy 1980's long coats that musos wore in those days??
And most pop stars today look really cool don't they... er NOT
16. Sounds very cool - perhaps we could Dropbox the original video file then set up a joint YouTube account so we could upload various vids - not sure how feasible that is but would be a nice way to link visuals and the music - could be interesting
17. Loved this too - TL is simply awesome - and it was a great lesson in how the creative process works - and how they really don't make albums like this anymore - BUT the biggest pleasure of all was watching a music program on that Beeb that wasn't Later... !!!!
18. I wish I could find a better example of it than this - but I just so happen to be listening to 'Little Worlds' by the Flecktones and Vic Wooten's tone on the first track 'Bill Mon' on his fretless is just gorgeous - but also on the track 'Puffy' - it just has a little bit of everything in it, a bit of high end sparkle (bit not too much), lovely mid-range warmth and punch, but then some bottom end too when he switches to finger style... a hard one to explain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9lrIe4l_ZM I love Matt Garrison's tone too - the really rich and warm mid tone without too much high end - it really sings... but hey there tons of great tones out there - Gary Willis' fretless tone is simply astonishing IMO - but this is all just MY taste...
19.
Nice stuff Mike! I used to have a couple of those Laney cabs way way back too
Thanks Si I'm not using the amps by the way - all the bass is coming via the laptop - I want to use an amp / cab for onstage sound but I haven't done that yet - so the amps here are just for pop-video show (well they are just in the rehearsal room!) Glad you dug it Mike
20. Here's a link to download the first tune from Bandcamp: http://mikeflynnsurb.bandcamp.com/track/push Hope you enjoy Cheers peeps Mike
A DAW is a DAW - work flow comes into play really when it comes to choice. These days all the more well known Vendors all pretty much do the same. Its then down to what they come with FX/Synth wise, or Video & Scoring wise, and Nuendo for post production etc. Audio cards are what the sound quality is all about for budget/project studios. Of course Pro Tools HD and the Radar systems are another matter. Been using Cubase for years and feel like trying something new [Just Gas more than likely] Pro-Tools 10 does look interesting, but i am holding back for the moment, Digital Performer 8 for W7 PC is out soon, and i have always liked the idea with that.[Mac only up till now] Great Midi & Video/Scoring side to it. Enjoy your Pro Tools, be interesting to see how you get on with it Charic.
I agree - I'm loving Ableton but am missing some of the sounds I know and love from Logic, I know you can rewire it buy that just gets complicated - I'm now starting to take more time to explore the vast array of plugins etc in Ableton - I think the good thing from my point of view is I have a pretty good idea of what I want the end result to sound like and I just happen to use Logic and Ableton.,, I'm sure I'd get just as good results with PT but this is where I'm at right now
In order of everything I've tried. Reason, audacity, protools, logic, cubase, nuendo, ableton, sonar and reaper Nothing has matched Protools. Logic was closest but there was still a big gap
That'sall good - while I've used Logic a lot I'm not a devout user unwilling to hear god things about other DAWs and obvously pretty much every studio tracking session I've ever done has been done with PT - and it sounds and works beautifully - BUT I still get great results with Logic so see no need to change. So I'm interested what makes Pro Tools simply the best ever and put so many other things in the shade? I've read quite a few PT Vs Logic articles online - just be interested to hear your opinion - I have nothing whatsoever against PT - I'd like it myself - I just can't see why I should switch over now... maybe another year. M
23. The only thing that springs to mind is you may need to update the software for the M-Audio unit - try searching out 'drivers' for your soundcard model - M-Audio will probably have some free software downloads on their website - if that fails then a new soundcard might be necessary - Apogee is very good but a bit pricey - let me know how you get on.
24. Hey Karl Wicked to see you posting here - sounding sweet and funky as ever - great stuff and a lovely tone too - nice one mate Hope to see you around in person sometime soon - hope all is well with you Cheers Mike
25. Just uploaded one more tune from this session - hope you enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe4wCUSwAFc
