1.
What he said. Also they aren't very good. At all.
+100
2. I know I run the risk of unleashing a wave of 'meh' and various polarised views on Jaco's work by posting yet more interpretations of his stuff - but I think this is rather good: Love this too:
3. Here's the thing... Wooten himself has said: "the bass doesn't make any music - the musician makes the music" - so flip the OP around the other way and instead of asking is slap boring? - why not - is the musician boring? In Vic's case I don't think so - in many other cases yes... I agree with Paul/Dobby's comment re this is a bit of fun - they are having fun not taking a f***ing exam, it sounds like fun, two guys having a laugh on stage for entertainment's sake... and in that case I think it's fine.
4.
Fixed for you
I've told you I don't want you auto-tuning my posts OK...
5. Many jazz albums are still cut completely live today and often feature only first or second takes - I spoke to one engineer recently who told me he's now working more and more with jazz bands as the level of playing among some well known/popular bands is so bad - and that they reply on fixing and splicing stuff in the studio to sound good - that he finds it depressing when he can actually play ALL the band's instruments better than they can - even if he admits he's a crap keyboard player... technology is just a tool, always has been, and it's always open to positive use or abuse - let's face it if you want to go completely analogue and do single live takes today - you can
6. By the way - Michael League plays with great new US jazzy/funky/proggy band called Snarky Puppy who are on a UK tour next month - by all accounts they rock live... skip the intro waffle on this vid (bass players waffling, who'd have thunk it:) ) - and check this out - link to dates below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjO785yL4Jk http://www.songkick.com/artists/29793-snarky-puppy
7. This is superb - sure the gurning is what it is, does it matter? How many of you *never* pull a face when playing...? Anyway that aside this is such a lovely, free-flowing take on this tune - and shows you really don't have to play it on fretless to do it justice - further proof too of Jaco's awesome compositional talents... thanks for posting - the drums and keys are flawless for me too.
8.
That's a lot better! That distorted phased bass sounds very like something on Caress of Steel by Rush. Can't remember the track but it really is very similar! Great stuff man!
Cheers Nige - I've not heard that track, I've not listened to Rush for years (seriously), and typically I couldn't let this track lie once I'd done the demo - but the of course I had a few other ideas on how to improve it - I could go on but it's all there in the music - I'm glad you like it - working purely from the inspiration of that pic was great as well - I wasn't thinking 'oh I must make a jazz fusion funk track' even though it starts a bit like that! Thanks again - any other opinions wlecome Mike
9.
Mike, it's good man! Amazing considering how little effort you put in Looking forward to the finished version.
Thanks mate - here's the finished thing: http://soundcloud.com/munkio/pushed-over-pulled-under Hope you enjoy the end result - let me know and thanks for listening - I've added some dubstep glitches for fun I really have 'finished' now - this recording lark is toooo addictive - I have work to do... Thanks for inspiring me all the same..! Mike
10.
http://soundcloud.com/munkio/pushed-and-pulled Wow, great playing as always Mike! This is really quirky. The crazy phasing/distortion that rips it up around the one minute mark and towards the end is great. Sounds nice and clear through my cans too. Goodness knows how your Sunday lunch turned out, but this rocks!
Cheers dude - I'm not happy with the mix and there are a few finishing touches - but considering I did this track from scratch on a Sunday afternoon - starting with the drums and a big heavy riff in mind - I'm quite pleased with the results - everything was composed out of 'necessity' i.e. I didn't have time to spend too long on any of it - although I had a vague 'concept' in mind... anyway I hope the finished version will be a little better. Thanks for the feedback... Mike
11. OK - here's mine - fock knows what you'll think of this - all done very quickly on a Sunday while cooking dinner in between takes Edit: this is a rough first draft - there are a few things I want to add and it badly needs a remix - but hope you dig some of the ideas... Double Edit Finished version: http://soundcloud.com/munkio/pushed-over-pulled-under
12.
Hey No worries matey! Sorry for adding GAS If you find it as much of a tortuous route as I did to get a nice starting point to work from then ping me and I'll send you a photo of the settings I've got.... Si
Thanks that may well be helpful - and to be honest it's the one pedal that I've been wanting for a while - my bass IQ is a bit f***ed now and I've been thinking about a replacement for ages - I was extremely impressed with the sensitivity of it and I think it'll work great in the bands that I do - so I don't really count it as GAS this time - just a sensible investment
13. Hey Si - great to see you the other day, albeit far too briefly - I just bough a Maxon - AF-9 - well ordered it... f-ing love that pedal so thanks for helping me find an envelope filter that works! M
14. Hello all, Sorry for the re-post but this stuff kind of gets buried in the recordings forum - anyway I wrote and produced the music on four of the tracks here - the others were cut live in the studio (all tracks co-written etc with lead vocal melodies/lyrics all by Paula Rae Gibson) - it's kind of the music I like to listen to and is definitely not jazz but all the musicians on it are certainly jazz players - anyway I hope you enjoy it (or some of it) it's taken bloody ages to pull together... but that's another story Cheers and thanks for listening Mike Rae Forest Project - The Pleasure of Ruin Album link: http://babel-label.b...leasure-of-ruin
15.
At last! I'll have a listen later. If it's anything like some of the preview stuff I heard it will be very interesting! Paula Rae has a powerfully emotive voice.
Hey Nige I know this has been in the works for ages - I'd love to know what you make of it - the finished recordings are soooo much better than the demos I played you - vocals recorded in Paris this time last year on the four songs I produced Cheers Mike
16.
Loved it - ordered vinyl version...ta for posting, urb! Also found the Babel site / delivery thingy really nice to use...
Thanks dude - really appreciate it - looking forward to getting this out there to the wider world proper in the new year... Thanks again Mike
17. Hello all, Well it's been a while in the making but here's a new album project I've been working on with a great singer/artist, Paula Rae Gibson, I won't go on about the whys and wherefores of the album aside from saying that the backing music on tracks 1, 2, 4 and 7 was put together by me - Paula adding her own top line melodies and lyrics - and the rest were recorded live in the studio and were co-written by the band. It's a bit jazzy but more a mix of 'grown up' pop, rock, funk and dance - hope you enjoy it. It should have a proper release on Babel early next year. Cheers Mike Rae Forest Project - The Pleasure of Ruin Album link: http://babel-label.b...leasure-of-ruin
18. OK we're still on the faaaacking M25 - we might make it this century - anyway we're hoping to be there but I'm not sure I'll muster the enthusiasm for workshop type things - oh well
19. Hey chaps - Russ and I are also enduring M25 hell right now - just two hours now - by the Leatherhead exit! Should be there soon - please have some strong coffee and cakes ready - I'll do my workshop thing as soon as I can get set up Aaaaaaa!
20. Good work people - while not all of a similar standard the effort and imagination here is all to be highly commended - well done everyone. I voted for the one I liked the best - I liked it because it was quirky and musical at the same time... and had a cool groove too Time permitting I'll see about making a track for the next one of these - great to see this stuff happening here chaps M
21.
And what's with the second guitarist lurking in the back ground? If you're going to use extra musicians put them where they can be seen otherwise everyone will assume you are using backing tracks.
Frigging A - totally agree - I'm guessing it was 'management' suggesting that it would undermine their image as a 'trio' - the extra guitar guy is probably out of sight when they play arenas... and while I'm digging the kind of organic use of a synth bass (i.e.e it's not on a loop etc) this song is sounding dangerously like U2... I guess it was only a matter of time before Muse went that way. Good players though.
22. Really looking forward to this – but re my 'workshop' please keep your expectations as low as possible and won't be disappointed Only kidding - but it is just gonna be me chatting a bit and pushing a few buttons - might be cool if someone wants to sit in too so I can loop them etc - anyway should be fun - really want to jam a bit too this year - and get my GAS on... See y'all Saturday Mike
23.
I went through this phase..... What hindsight tells me is that a lot of this stuff suffered from a superficiality that meant it struggled to live up to the standards of great Jazz and often lacked the musical interaction that, for me, defined the greatest Jazz. Lots of fusion suffered from 'look at meeee' excesses in place of decent content. But there is undoubtedly some great stuff out there. Personal favourites include Nova's LP 'Vimana', Al DiMeola's 'Soaring Through A Dream', Chick Coea's 'Light As A Feather' LP, his first 'Elektric Band' LP, the first two Tribal Tech LPs ('Dr Hee' and 'Spears')... Yeahn, some great stuff and a great gateway to proper Jazz but there was a lot of 'fluff' in there too.
Yeah but Rob... there's a hell of a lot of fluff in 'proper' jazz too... and just about every other genre for that matter - bad fuzak is admittedly horrible to listen to - fill in your own love-to-hate them name here - but there's an equal amount of non-committal by the numbers bebop/hard bop players / acts around too - they just sound less obtrusive etc. Anyway I agree with you - I just think fusion gets a bad name and let's face it, 'fusion' as a concept is every where now, not just in music (be it food or design) but at the quality end of mainstream-ish music pretty much every artist is using lots of different genres in their stuff now - which is what I thought was the original idea of fusion - to fuse together different sounds and styles - why it went down the Olympian virtuoso route I don't know - but as just one example someone like Jaco was into myriad styles - plus he was technically advanced - hence he gets labeled a fusion player... anyway I love some of it (like most other styles) but not all of it (like most styles). Keeping your ears and mind open is always good eh?
24. I love some fusion - not all - a great recent-ish album for me is Ranjit Barot's Bada Boom - amazing Indo-jazz mash up of tons of great stuff - Indian classical, jazz rock, funk, big band, konokol, tablas, and some of the finest musicians on the planet, not least Barot on drums - Matt Garrison, Wayne Krantz, John McLaughlin and tons more - I love this album.
25.
Well if you cant we're all a bit stuffed then!
I try - I fail regularly - so I try again... obviously all depends on what I'm trying to play - but the more I play the more I realise what an insanely small amount I actually know about music... most of the time I rely on sheer gut instinct, my ears and my limited technique and knowledge - the rest is just 'having a go'.
