1. I can always show you guys some slap stuff that actually is melodic and not just endless triplets - in fact this year I might just punt for an 'extra curricular picking techniques" masterclass - that way we can look at all the picking stuff that you can do - and look also at two finger picking a well...! Let me know what you think

I'm there failing any last minute misshaps - last year's was really enjoyable - I'm happy to do another workshop thing but also happy to let someone else do a music theory session as I'm sure there a load of people - ahem, Jakesbass - who can explain things better than I. What I could do is talk about writing and recording your own music - which might fit nicely with Simon's suggestion for a workshop on recording which I'd very much welcome - I can certainly outline the way music theory and broader musical knowledge can essentially help you expand the possibilities of writing your own music... sound good?
 3. Very good - a bit loose around the edges but lovely tones and nice playing - good work with the editing too - I take it you're not actually a Lefty - just the way the camera flipped the images... yes?
 4.
Marcus's bass part makes this track. Imagine it played fingerstyle? It would work but just wouldn't have the same impact. A perfect example of melodic slap.
Definitely - what a great track too - Luther was a classy guy

 7. I think you should play however you want - if you enjoy it then that's the main thing - working and playing with musicians is the next - a love of music should probably go before both of those - success is all relative and I think being technically adept is all part and parcel of learning your 'trade' - admittedly there are a ton of bedroom players now, probably more than ever, is that wrong? I know guys who play stadiums who can slap, tap, sweep pick and improv jazz till the cows come home - but they can grab a pick and play 8th notes too... it all MUSIC at the end of the day.
 8. I'm friends with the lead guitarist Bobby Harrison - we had a band together for a few years - he's a very fine player and I'm chuffed for him that he's now playing to massive audiences on a regular basis - the BF band is very good indeed.
 9. Kind of jazzy/funky/drum 'n' bass - but increasingly into singer-songwriter/hip hop (!) - you can listen here http://mikeflynnsurb.bandcamp.com/album/homespun
 10. "Bass knowledge...!" Still good on second, third and fourth viewings...

 13.
That's weird. Mine definitely came up with a hardware error relating to the FW ports when I had this problem. Still if you are going to replace the Mac you will be able to sell the old one on with only a small price hit as the majority of people I know with Macs who aren't musicians never use the FW ports.
That's what is weird - but neither of them work - I've tried external hard-drives and audio interfaces - I even tried hooking my MBP up via firewire which I've done before to transfer particularly big files and I still got nothing. When it first started playing up I did smell a faint wiff of something like it had burnt - though none of that lovely 'magic smoke' appeared - I will maybe run the AHT again and see if I get any joy but I did do the full text that took over an hour to run. But like you say I should be able to sell the Mac on - even if I can get half what I paid for it I'll be happy. Link to how to run the Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 Thanks again for all the comments and input on this - like I've said before I searched everywhere for info on this situation and there wasn't any - I hope others find this thread useful and avoid the hassles of burning up your FW ports Cheers M
 14.
Urb - have you run the hardware tests on your Mac? It's a partition on the system DVD that came with it. Restart with the DVD in the drive and hold down the Option key as the Mac restarts. You will see a set of icons for the different start up disks available one of which will be called Hardware Test. Click on this and follow the instructions. Note down any error messages/codes you get. If you book an appointment at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store they may well ask you to do this first anyway. I managed to fry the FW port on my G4 1.25 by hot plugging a drive. Luckily it was still under guarantee so I just played dumb and said that I'd only just tried the port and it didn't appear to be working. The (free) fix was a new mother board.
Hey man - sadly I've done the AHT thing from the original install DVD and the results said there was nothing wrong with the Mac, like I said I've tried everything to test them - I think it was either my audio interface or an external HD that did the damage - I've spoken with a repair guy and he said as the FW ports are buried inside and hardwired to the motherboard it's going to be expensive to repair - and the computer is now 4 years old so well out of warranty. The upside is my new MacBook is running well and I'm going to use that for music stuff while I start to raise funds for a kick ass new desktop... sh*t happens - Macs break like everything else! Thanks for your thoughts on this - at least I'm pretty confident I've isolated the problem and it's a lesson learned the hard way - I was thinking that I am going to have to get a new computer at some point in the next year anyway as my current one has been getting slower and not handling multiple programs as well it's now obvious I need to replace it before it has a full on meltdown in the middle of an important piece of work! M
 15. The truth hurts - but it's also incredibly funny
 16. Tinie Tempah bass dude is called Rick James - monster player from London, he's got a Streamer 6 string, he was in BGM recently and plays around town a bit in various bands - he's endorsed by Mark Bass - good to see a guy like him doing the big stages, he's a killing jazz funk player.
 17.
Give these guys a shout.... http://www.macrepairslondon.com/ I've used them before and they are pretty good and not too expensive
Cool man thanks - I did already call the Apple store on Regents St and got a ballpark figure on the kind of repair job I think my machine will need - so I don't think I'll get it done cheaper elsewhere - I spoke to an Apple repair place in London Bridge and the guy (who was really helpful) said as a third party shop they have to order in parts which can take a while too - though I may give these guys a try. On the upside I have a new Macbook pro and that's all fine so at least I can use that as my music machine from now on - the new desktop beast will have to wait a few months. Cheers Mike
 18.
Strange isn't it.... I've been hot plugging all my USB and Firewire devices for years and only just read about this. I've personally never had an issue though.
Like said I've not had any issues with it for ages then suddenly it all stopped working - it's a damn pain in the butt - and it's why I've just f***ed my Mac - I mean it works fine but without FW ports I'm a bit screwed in terms of various harddrives and audio interfaces - plus Logic has been moaning at me for pushing it with lots of tracks - such a bummer but to get the FW prts replaced means messing with the motherboard which will cost (for starters) £350... I think that's going towards a new machine Oh bugger - more dosh out the door...
 19.
Me and a mate should be coming along to this . Shouldn't think Oteil will be soloing much, if at all, in this group setting Si
Yeah he's usually chugging away on a Fender jazz bass for these kind of gigs... but he's great at that too Like this...
 20.
Hot plugging Firewire is a known issue. Although the Firewire spec is designed to be hot-pluggable, it can cause chip failure. My Focusrite Saffire I/O's manual was keen to point this out. http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/article.php?id=1063
Yeah me thinks i should have paid more attention to that.... doh! Looks like it's going to mean a new Mac for me now...
 21.
Have you been hot-plugging bus-powered stuff? That's apparently the kiss of death for Firewire ports. It may happen first time... it may happen the one-thousandth time... but it'll probably happen eventually. ZAP. Pfff. Dead. Or so I've heard. I've heard it so many times that I never hot-plug Firewire stuff, or power it from the bus. But like Crez sez, get thee to an Apple store.
You know you've probably just hit the nail on the head - my Mackie audio interface was working great on Bus power then suddenly showed power surges - I wondered why it was doing it after working fine for ages - then an external hard drive is now not showing up either... I should have suspected something but it had all been working fine. Annoyingly it's reminded me of the limitations of my current set up and made me now think I'd rather put the money it could cost to repair towards a new mac! Thanks for your thougts guys - very helpful
 22. Looks like my 2008 Intel iMac's Firewire ports are no longer working - I've tried every damn solution posted on the web to check /reboot them and I know it's not my FW cables or external hard drives at fault - I know it's almost inevitable that I'll have to take the machine to be repaired at a specialist shop but I just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything similar or had a clue about how much replacing these kinds of parts can be? My suspicion is that it might not actually be worth replacing them and saving for a new computer instead.... Any answers from those in the know on this subject would be appreciated Thanks guys and gals Mike
 23.
People who don't own them. People who do own them don't care, they just play them.
Exactly my feelings on the subject - thanks Mark Cheers Mike
 24. Honestly who cares if they are a fad or not?
 25. I just heard this joke today - I'm sure it's a bzilion years old: What's the difference between a blues musician and a jazz musician? A blues musician plays three chords to an audience of thousands - and a jazz musician plays thousands of chords to an audience of three... (and before anyone else posts it - yes a pizza can feed a family of four... a jazz musician might not be able to do that.. ) Self-indulgence is (as with most other taste related topics) in the eye/ear of the beholder - I'm not a fan of most out and out shredding but once in a while it's great - it all depends on the context of the music, the era it was made in, who's playing it - I think the Wooten solo is cool that was posted earlier - he's doing that to 10,000+ folks in a stadium - a little more than your average jazzer me thinks.
